I recently bought a lot of cheap make-up from a discounted online cosmetics retailer, and have been having lots of mixed experiences with the bits I bought! This lip shimmer cost around £1, and is available in a range of shades. My review is for the shade "Maple". This lip shimmer stick promises to "provide brilliant shine and beaming colour to your lips" and is made from natural ingredients including vitamins and natural oils. It comes in a stick format which you twist from the base to make the stick of balm rise up.
On receiving this, it really reminded me of the Burt's Bees shimmering lip balm that I purchased around the same time. The problem I had with that product was that the colour looked dreadful on me - and in all honestly I didn't hold out much hope for this one. This balm is very pigmented, and as I prefer more subtly coloured or clear balms and glosses, I was worried that this may be a bit much! It has an incredibly strong colour - a very orangey rusty colour that really isn't very pleasant to look at! It also has a pinky-gold sheen to it.
Applying this to lips, it glides on really nicely - it has a nice, creamy texture and feels very rich and moisturising. It also has a minty flavour to it - again, just like the Burt's Bees version. However as I feared the colour really isn't for me! It is actually a bit of a horrible shade and I am not sure who it would suit - it's not a pretty or subtle shade and I am not sure of anyone who can pull off the rusty lips look! This is a bit of a shame as it seems to be a really good lip balm - it definitely moisturises and softens dry lips, and if I could have this in a colourless - or at least much more subtly coloured - version I would really like this. As it is it is set for the bin as it isn't one that works for me at all sadly.
Not for me
Overall, despite the fact that this didn't work for me, I don't think this is a bad product - especially for the price. It actually provides a really good moisture boost to dry lips and it does feel nice when on. I think it compares favourably with the Burt's Bees version, so if you're a fan of that one it may be worth checking out this cheaper version.
