I am always a little sceptical when a mascara promises miracles especially when the advert also says
the 'model is styled with lash inserts'. But this YSL false lash effect mascara really is like wearing false lashes. Not only that, but after a few weeks of use I really found that it strengthens and conditions lashes. Unlike many volume mascaras, this one doesn't flake or smudge and the 'black black' colour makes your eye colour really stand out.
This mascara is also very easy to remove.
The major downside to this product is that it dries out very quickly; easily within a month, which isn't great when you have spent a lof of money.
A tip I learned was to put the mascara in a cup of hot water to get the most out of it.
I would definitely recommend this product but it is not great for people who like the more natural look.
Also, it can appear to be very clumpy if it is not applied correctly.
Although it is a little pricey, it is well worth it. If you can buy the pack of two that are available at duty free in the airport; I am unsure if this is available on the high street or exclusive to duty free.
YSL Mascara of the false lash variety
Why choose this brand?
Simple, it was my birthday. I had been gifted cash. I wanted a treat, something that I don't normally splash out on. I've never had a high end, what I'd call posh, mascara before and I wanted to try. I have had some YSL items in the past and was suitably impressed, plus I have to say I like the eye candy containers which feel and ooze quality. Sold.
First off I've never donned falsies. That would make me a false lash virgin if I ever did, well you never know. At this point in time they don't appeal but the look does. I do like a fuller looking lash line, come on girls who doesn't. I've fallen or the selling ploys and promises in the past and been disappointed with what I got. Spider eyes, panda eyes, black splotchy under eyes - you get the picture and it wasn't pretty. So at the price of this one it had better be good. Oh yes, I want to be impressed YSL or I want my birthday cash back.
How can one not be impressed with the packaging of YSL products. Classy, that is the perfect word to describe YSL. The whole brand is class. I considered it an excitement inducing experience when I unpacked the mascara from the snug fitting, quality box. When it sat in my hand it felt heavier than other plastic tubes that I use and it was sparkling in the light. It reminds me of a wand of magic qualities as it sits tempting me with its rather expensive looking YSL emblem. I like it.
Once the lid is unscrewed, with luxurious ease, I slid out the wand (see I told you it reminded me of a magic wand) and revealed the brush. I have to admit I have seen similar looking brush heads but once again this one is quality and classy and the colour (black) intense. Not gloop or bittiness just thick, black substance. Lets play.
I've been using this for over a month now and so far I am very pleased. I normally use Maybelline which I am very happy with but of course that looks like a very poor relation when sat next to the YSL alternative.
I applied as advised by the YSL brand. So a sweep to the centre and then to either side, repeat if desired. The wand is heavier than the Maybelline and I don't find that either better or worse. The brush is easy to use and coats just the right amount onto my lashes - having said that so does the alternative cheaper brand.
One coat offers an adequate appearance, though I like two to give the fuller and thicker false lash effect - though I still believe that they don't look like I have falsies on. It's not a complaint but I did think that with all the hype they would be more false looking. That may have been my expectations being elevated above realistic results. In comparison, as I do like to do that, the Maybelline fairs well in producing just as good and if not slightly better false look effects. I have to say that the quality of the mascara is better from the YSL but only just.
Having sensitive skin and eyes, heck I'm a sensitive little flower you know, I like to see how products fair and am pleased to report that YSL does not cause adverse reaction - nor does the Maybelline offering.
Now for the difference. Not in looks or appearance or effect once applied as they are neck and neck - which for the price difference is a huge compliment to Maybelline. Staying power and unwanted special effects: YSL stays put, simple as that. I've had no unsightly panda eyes or gloopy bits or speckled black spots under the eyes. Maybelline drops spots of black under the eyes eventually.
YSL mascara is easier than the Maybelline to wash off and does not leave as much black under the eye on initial cleansing. It is lasting without any deterioration to the brush or fluid. I've not noticed any drying at this time, but after a month and at that price I wouldn't expect to.
It's a treat to use, you can develop intensity over more coats and the wand allows you to flick lashes out to the side for the Bohemian Beauty look if you so desire - well there are times when I desire so that is a must.
I bought from www.feelunique.co.uk when on offer so it's worth watching out for as I got it for £18.00
House of Fraser
In comparison the Maybelline Colossal Smoky Eyes (yellow tube) is £7.99 and in Boots occasionally on 3 for 2. Just saying as it's a great one this with the only downside a few black specs come the afternoon - easily wiped away.
Even though it falls short of being exactly like wearing falsies I can't bring myself to award less than 5 stars. This product oozes the YSL quality. It's a quality brand and doesn't let the side down. From packaging to silky fluid this is class. Feeling it in your palm is exciting - indeed it is, well for me it was an still is. It's a real treat. It feels luxurious and expensive and wonderful. The brush is very acceptable and does a good job. You can be creative with it or use it as advised. I build up in two applications and then sweep to the side. I've not had any reactions to it and thankfully it's easy to wash off. The Maybelline alternative fairs well in comparison but just isn't the same experience, quality or stayer - it leaves black specs and the YSL doesn't - that's the difference, you can have confidence that you look great all day without having to check every so often for the speckles of black droplets. I can highly recommend.

I'm a bit of a mascara addict. I'll give new ones a try when they first hit the shelves out of curiousity, but I'm yet to find anything that tops this mascara.
So, what's so good about it?
- It's a good colour. I always buy the black, and it's dense, and leaves a glossy finish on the lashes.
- The brush is a good shape for me. Quite slim compared to some of the new ones out, and no plastic bristles. I find this much easier to apply, and build with, and I can hit every lash.
- Whether you want a natural look, or full on glamour, you can achieve it with this mascara. Apply several coats to get that full false eyelash effect. or just one or two for a very classy daytime look.
- Although my eyes have a tendency to be a little sensitive, no such problems here. Quite surprising, as the mascara does have quite a strong (but pleasant) smell.
- Easy removal. I don't use anything special to remove this mascara. A liquid cleanser, and some warm water, and it's all gone. No black smudges in the morning with this one.
When my husband bought me a YSL eye make up set for Christmas I was very excited as it was all new posh make up goodies I'd never tried before. In the set was a couple of eye creams, a bottle of remover, an eye liner and this mascara which ahs claims of making lashes look like they have a false effect.
Probably the first impression I got of the mascara was the lovely gold tube packaging. It looks very premium and fancy and I love seeing it in my make up bag. It's a 7.5ml tube which will last me ages.
I only ever use black mascara and this is a lovely shade of black (!) and the first time I used it the amount on the brush was fine, I can find new mascaras a bit gloopy at times until they dry up a bit. The bit I liked best was the generous length of the brush which meant I got quick even coverage on my lashes. I particularly appreciated that there was not a blob on the end of the brush as well which can make application a bit messy with some other mascaras. The mascara went on well, stayed put and came off easily with eye make up remover at the end of the day.
Prior to the YSL mascara I had been using a No7 mascara which I was overly happy with so I wasn't expecting this to be as good really although it's a great make. I like the long brush and have had no messy experiences with this mascara so far. I think this mascara delivers just what I want: it goes on cleanly and stays on all day with no extra rubbing at night to remove. I do find that there is some there the next morning but I get this with most mascaras even when I think I have removed everything I can at night.
The false effect?
Probably most important in this review is whether the mascara meets its claim of being a false lash look. I think it definitely defines the eye area well, and the colour is buildable so if you are wanting to go for it you can put a few layers on to create a more dramatic look. I am not really wanting to look like I have false eye lashes on for a normal day to day look so I just put one coat on and it looks just right to me.
As mine came in a set, the unit price comes down a bit but to buy this on its own you can expect to pay £23.50 in most big department stores.
This is definitely a premium mascara and its packaging doesn't let it down. It helps to achieve a glamour look when used with other eye make up like liner and eyeshadow. The box promises glamour in the wink of an eye and I do agree this is fast to use and fuss free with painless removal at the end of a long day. Highly recommended and enjoyable to use.
This YSL, Yves Saint Laurent, mascara is completely unique. YSL uses both a coating AND a conditioning film, they do this to give your lashes intensity and fix. As well as this this mascara also contains a vinyl polymer, the benefit of this is that you get a much longer lash. In basic terms, this mascara offers you intensity, fix and stay. If this is not enough to get you on the YSL bandwagon, vinyl polymer works by fixing nylon fibres to your natural lash.
So as well as offering you a much more beautiful lash YSL adds special ingredients into their mascara! With aloe Vera and pro vitamin B5, you can now have wonderful long lashes as well as healthy.
How to use:
You should use this particular mascara by getting right to the underneath of your lash and work it from the root to the tip.
Also you should work from the Inside to the outside of your eye.
This is how to use this mascara to its full potential.
Obviously, these are the facts on the mascara. However you will never really know until you try it yourself. In my opinion this mascara is the best I have ever bought. This product does lengthen and you get a false lash look. But not the cheap stick on type of false, very expensive false. As well as it doing what it says above, it is a wonderfully smelling, attractive mascara. The only downside is the mascara is very wet so it is very prone to smudging. I would say this product is an all round beautiful mascara, I wholeheartedly recommend it.
I am an absolute sucker for any marketing ploy and buying this mascara definitely falls under that category for me. I was seduced by the fancy packaging, by the pouty sales assistant and by the dream of a false lash effect mascara. But not all dreams comes true.
This mascara retails at a shocking £23.50 for a single tube. I bought mine in duty free so I saved a little money off the price but I still feel as though I was sold a false dream. YSL is not a brand I often buy from, they have a few products that everyone raves about but for me their prices are sky high and I simply can't justify indulging myself like that. That said, this was a fairly premeditated purchase in that I'd seen it in glossy magazines and one tv and knew faced with it in person at the airport I wouldn't be able to resist...and I didn't.
The mascara comes in a gold metal tube which has a twist lid and is imprinted with the brand name and logo. The design for the mascara is beautiful. It screams money, it looks expensive and stylish. It mixes just the right amount of modernity with classic style and thus draws in the young and aspirational and the old(er) with disposable income. I think the appeal for this mascara is wide, and as a young woman I love to be able to treat myself to special items like this once in a blue moon.
The mascara fluid is really nice and thick and the bush is well designed. This mascara has a soft bristle brush which looks nice and is equally enjoyable to use. The effect of he mascara isn't quite false lash standard in my opinion but it does get closer than others have before. It lengthens my lashes, it keeps them separated whilst adding volume. The mascara is a lovely rich black colour and looking amazing when on.
So you might be asking what my issue is with this seemingly good mascara? For me it has to be the length of time it lasts before becoming unusable. Which in my experience has been just over a month of relatively consistent use. After this time the mascara fluid became clumpy and too thick to use. It clogged up the brush and clumped my lashes rendering it unusable. I wonder if this is a deliberate ploy to make you re-purchase what is a perfectly good mascara. Either way I found it thoroughly disappointing and didn't go running back for seconds.
It really actually outrages me that you can pay almost £25 for a mascara and be left with a clumpy mess in little over a month. It definitely stops me from wanting to buy this mascara again and it has left me feeling just a little bit bitter.
In conclusion, I would happily receive this as a gift as it would bother me much less when it becomes clumpy and unusable if someone else has forked out for it. When it is my own money though it simply leaves a bitter taste in my mouth.
Well as with every women out there I am a bit of a mascara junkie...I must have tried every mascara from L'Oreal, No 7, Lancome to Benefit in search of something I was happy with. I'm a bit fussy when it comes to my lashes and I have a list of likes and dislikes for my lashes;
I like it to look fresh all day
Absolutely no clumps
Don't like the 'spiderleggy' look
I want length, volume AND curl
I hate the feeling of brittle lashes (you know when they feel like they will snap under your mascara)
I don't want it to look like its lost its shape an hour into the day
And the blacker the better
I know that's alot to ask for but I'm fussy!
Before I found this little beauty I was achieving everything I wanted but by using 3 different mascaras, one for length, one for intense volume and another which had a thinner brush to comb out the clumps and spiderleggy look..plus curlers and a drawing pin to separate! What a ball ache!!!
Then in need of my Touche Eclat one day the young counter girl pointed me in the direction of a giftset containing my beloved touche eclat and the uk's no1 luxury mascara...I figured why not.
On my first use of this mascara (as with all mascara's) it needed a little working and although the look was satisfactory it wasn't anything I hadn't seen before. But i persevered and with every passing week I fell a little more in love with it.. My lashes felt like they weren't wearing anything..they could bend and move (when I' d rub my eyes..gotta stop doing that) and I wouldnt snap my lashes off) It looked fresh and perfect all day..the curl i,d created i in the morning was still there at night. There were no fibres to aggravate my eyes (which wearing 3 different mascara's daily had obviously been doing.) People are CONSTANTLY commenting on my 'falsies'! I'd safely say at least twice daily!! They are more than shocked when they hear its just a little gold mascara!! I love how on a night out...i could layer this up 3 or 4 times and the lashes looked phenomenal! Have never ever created the effect of this mascara with anything else.
This mascara does everything; length, curl, volume, definition. It also has vitamin B which strengthens and conditions the lashes, (extremely necessary after abusing them with cheaper mascara's). I go to the gym in it, run in it, sweat in it, sunbathe in it and even had a little cry and it does not budge! Be warned though, don't swim in it! Panda eyes aren't a great look! And it comes off so easily at the end of the day. It comes in an array of colours from violet to grey, brown to plum. I've since moved onto the 'noir radical' which is the intense black, and i love it! It is more of a wet look mascara so not everyone's cup of tea..but experiment and play with them all.
I have the shortest, stubbiest eyelashes in the world ever, and so mascara is an essential item for me, especially one that will make my lashes look longer and fuller. I think that I've tried probably every premium mascara out there, some I love, some are ok, some are just a waste of money. This one I kinda love, and also kinda hate!
I always buy black mascaras, as I have dark brown lashes. The YSL Faux Cils mascara does come in a wide range of colours. It retails for £23.00 in most places, I would normally buy it duty free to save a few pounds though. I have been using this on and off for years now, and I will probably continue to do so.
First the love:
This mascara absolutely definately lives up to its claim - Luxurious mascara for a false lash effect - it definately does what it says on the tin. This mascara is absolutely brilliant at turning my short stubby eyelashes into long luxurious 'falsh lash effect' eyelashes, in fact although I've been using this for years on and off now I still can't get over the transformation it makes to my lashes. This gives me long, intense, thick, glamorous jet black lashes. You can build the volume and definition up by adding another coat of mascara, one coat is more than enough, but for extra oomph I sometimes add another.
This is a perfect all day or all night mascara, it doesn't come off, no panda eyes! But it also happens to be really easy to wash off too, I just use my normal cleanser and water and it washes off easily enough. I tend to only use make up remover to take it off if I've had other heavy eye make up on as well.
Now the hate:
My gripe with this mascara is that it dries out and goes thick and clumpy in the tube after just a few months, this then clogs the brush and makes the mascara go on thick and clumpy as well. I find that I have to replace the tube before it's finished as it has become unusable. I think that for the price you pay for this, this is definately my hate with this mascara.
So basically when it's good it's brilliant, in fact I don't think that you can get better if you want the false lash effect. But when it's started to dry out and clump in the tube, after an unacceptably short time for a premium mascara at £23.00 if you ask me, then it's pretty bad, in fact it's worse than some cheapy mascaras.
I will continue to buy it as during those first few months you can't fault it, but I do buy it kinda begrudgingly as I know it won't last long and it's expensive for such a short period of use, especially as there's lots of mascara still actually left in the tube - it's just unusable!
I'm only going to give it 3 stars as I feel it should last longer, but the initial performance does warrant 5 stars.
I have always gone for fairly cheap mascaras believing there was no great difference in quality between cheaper and more expensive brands. However, I was given this mascara as a present recently and can't believe how good it is! I have quite long lashes naturally but with this mascara they look incredible. They don't look like false lashes as Yves Saint Laurent claim but I think that is probably an unrealistic goal for any mascara. The main good points are that it isn't clumpy at all and isn't 'unnaturally black' for my fair complexion. With only one coat it really makes my lashes stand out so i'm hoping it will last for quite a while, making it a bit more economic! It has a pleasant but not overpowering smell and the gold packaging gives it the luxury feel you would expect from Yves Saint Laurent. I would definitely buy this in future.
There are so many mascaras on the market at the moment which will promise you that you can bin the false eyelashes and wear their mascara instead. And YSL Faux Volume Effet Cils Mascara is one of the more expensive brands making the claim that having luxurious lashes will become a reality when wearing their product.
As with all of YSL products, the mascara comes in a beautiful shimmering gold packaging and the mascara itself is encased within a thick shiny golden tube with YSL imprinted on the front. It can be bought for around £20 from all large department stores including Boots. The product comes in a variety of shades including high intensity black, extreme blue, fascinating violet and sublime grey. It is suitable for both those with sensitive eyes and contact lens wearers.
This mascara promises to give your lashes more volume and to make them appear thicker so that you no longer need to wear false eyelashes. According to YSL, it creates full and intensified lashes using a Triple Film Complex with three magic steps.
Firstly it contains a coating film with nylon particles which cover and thicken your lashes from root to tip. Secondly it contains a conditioning film which will curl the lashes. And thirdly, it contains a fixing film which fixes the intense colour to your lashes for a long lasting effect without flaking and will deepen the beauty of your eyes.
In addition to all this, the mascara also contains provitamin B5 as well as plant originated bioactive sugars to protect you eyelashes from dehydrating which will in turn, also prevent flaking. The long thin bristled wand with nylon bristles has also been designed with the view of amplifying its formula and providing you will a satisfying false lash effect making touch ups unnecessary. In order to get the best from the application of this mascara, you should clean the brush with a dry tissue once a week
The negative with product is that it doesn't have a very long live. After a few months, the formula starts to dry and becomes difficult to apply and no longer has the desired affect. Also, to achieve the false lash effect, you may need to apply a few coats. Despite this though, the colour which coats your lashes is intense and not dulling. If applied carefully, it doesn't clump your eyelashes together due to the shape and design of the wand.
It instantly makes my lashes look a little thicker and a lot longer and without a doubt makes my eyes look intense and glamorous. I wouldn't say it looks like I'm wearing false eyelashes but it's pretty close and doesn't come with the hassle of using glue and spending ages trying to get the lashes in position so I am more than happy to switch to this. It can also be easily moved using your normal eye make remover.
Overall, this mascara does exactly as it promises. It is expensive and there are much cheaper alternatives out there. But this mascara is luxurious and will make you feel special so I feel its worth shelling out for. I just wish it lasted a bit longer!
This is one of my 2 favourite mascaras mainly because of the great extension it gives to your lashes.
Believe me I have tried and bought my fair share of mascaras and I've been disappointed on so many occasions when buying different brands but this is the only other one apart from the maybelline great lash mascara that I believe delivers great volume and length.
There are 3 down side to this mascara,
1. Unless you turn the tube until it clicks all the mascara will dry up in the tube (easily done by mistake so be aware)
2. It becomes quite dry and bitty after you have been using it a couple of weeks which for the price I believe is pretty poor.
3. It doesn't offer great value for money for the length of time it lasts, definitely room for improvement.
It does however offer great length and volume and does what it says on the tin to be honest! More of a treat mascara than a regular buy though.
I have used this mascara for a number of years and at £21.50 it is worth every penny. I am always complimented and people ask what mascara I am wearing. As a women in her early 40's I found a couple of years ago that my once bright blue eyes started to look grey and I started to have deep contours and shadows around my eyes I have tried almost every concealer and eye cream on the market and finally decided just to make the most of what I have. I use this mascara in Blue the blue is bright and a strong colour and brings my eyes alive it is worth every penny I just wouldn't be without it, or change it as it is now a staple in my make up box.
The mascara does not smudge and is easy to remove also the tube and packaging gives it that wow factor, the tube is gold in colour and made of metal which looks good in any make up bag. I am also told that bold colours are now trendy so this mascara would also look great on the young
I've been using this product with about five years now after having being recommended it by a beauty-obsessed friend. Seeing her amazing lashes prompted me to ask what mascara she used. And since I bought my first tube, I have never even considered buying another make of mascara.
The results are truly incredible - I've lost count of how many times people have asked me if I've been wearing false lashes, or complimented me on my eyes when I've been wearing this mascara.
The mascara works hard at both separating and elongating the lashes for that absolute wow impact. For the most dramatic results, I would recommend using the 'noir' color - it's dark and daring, perfect for the smoky eye look.
I also tend to get a lot of use out of each tube - and I wear this mascara every single day. I normally buy about three to four per year, which on a cost per use basis seems an absolute bargain in my opinion, considering how much use I get out of it! It is expensive though, so I would recommend stocking up on this in the duty free if you can - sometimes you can get multipacks for a serious discount!
It's easy to remove, doesn't clump and gives results without fail. If you're looking for dramatic lashes that last all day long then this has to be the mascara for you.
I have been using this mascara for a good 4 years now and would not use another kind. There are several reasons why. Firstly, it lasts so long. Three to five months. I can buy it maybe twice a year, which is good because its expensive. I usually get it at the duty free. Secondly, it is good at each stage of its use - when it is new you have to be careful not to use too much, because it really does make the lashes look super long and just one swipe of the brush can make a really dramatic effect. Halfway through the tube I really think the mascara is at its best and makes my lashes look not just long but really thick. Thirdly, the mascara smells great. Like really nice. Its nice to draw out the wand and smell it before use. Lastly, because it looks good in the chunky gold tube. At the very end of its life, it can go a little clumpy. But its easily solved with a bit of hot water. Still well worth a buy.
BEST. MASCARA. EVER!
I know that this is not the cheapest mascaras available but it is fantastic! In the past, I've bought Bourjois mascaras which were just useless they clogged up my eyelashes and they took forever to come off. Now this YSL Faux Volume Effet is just perfect, it goes on very easily and makes your eyelashes look longer without the need of using false eyelashes. In the past, a friend of mine actually thought I was wearing false eyelashes and I was ecstatic to inform her that actually I was just wearing this mascara and since then she has purchased this mascara! The mascara is also long lasting and has an incredible brush applicator which seperates each individual eyelash well without causes them to stick together. This mascara is also great because it comes in three colours, blue, brown and black. Black, for me, is the best one because it makes your eyes look very intense and gives that great long eyelash effect!
I highly recommend this product please do not waste your time buying cheaper mascaras because they do not work as well and you'll have to spend more money buying another!
An intense look in a single stroke Its secret: the triple-film complex / A coating film for intensity, a conditioning film for curve, a fixing film for long-lasting effectiveness / Even the brush applicator combines nylon fibers of varying diameters for volume enhancement as never before /
