I have been using this mascara for the past four or five weeks now and I find it ideal for daily wear as it gives my lashes length and volume but not to the point where they look over the top - it looks natural, but makes a visible difference - my lashes look more defined, my eyes look wider and brighter and my lashes have a subtle fluttery sort of look to them - it is the perfect mascara! The mascara is nice and lightweight, doesn't clump, doesn't flake and hasn't dried up or started to smell funny after several weeks of the tube being opened like the last mascara that I had did. The brush isn't too bulky but it's not too small and fiddly either and it is covered in lots of short bristles. The brush picks up the mascara really well and with each coat it covers each of my lashes evenly. I do find that this brush is a bit awkward when it comes to applying the mascara to my outer lashes because I have quite small eyes and even though it is not a massive or bulky brush it is a little bulkier than the brush that the mascara I'd been using before had. I was actually surprised by how average the brush is for such an expensive mascara but I do like that the bristles aren't all hard and spiky, and my eyes never get irritated when I apply it. The formula itself is gentle, it never makes my eyes feel sore or anything. The formula dries very quickly so I don't have to worry about it smudging and it stays in place for hours and hours. I find that it starts to wear off after around eight hours and after this time my lashes don't look as lifted and long, but they still look defined and noticeably longer and thicker than they usually look. The mascara doesnt make my lashes look like falsies or anything like that, which personally I like as it looks more natural. Removing the mascara isn't very time consuming and it comes away easily with a make-up remover wipe. The mascara retails at £23.50 which is a lot more than I would usually spend on a mascara but I managed to get mine for a slightly lower price thanks to a discount voucher. I would be willing to pay the full price though due to the quality of the mascara. The mascara is available in seven different shades including plum, blue, grey, brown, burgundy, bronze and black. I usually buy black mascaras however because I've got reddish brown hair at the minute rather than dark brown hair (which is my usual shade) I decided to go for the brown one which is darker than I expected and it still gives my lashes plenty of definition. All in all I give this mascara five out of five stars. The packaging (an elegant golden tube which comes in a posh box), the formula and the colour options are all brilliant. If I had to fault it I'd say that the brush could be a little smaller and neater but this isn't a massive disadvantage. Also, YSL claim that the mascara gives a false lash effect however in my opinion it looks quite subtle and natural even with a few coats. It is buildable, but even with ten coats I very highly doubt that it would leave me looking like I was wearing false lashes. Still, I didn't buy this because I wanted a mascara that gave my lashes a huge amount of length and volume, so this isn't a problem for me.
I tend to go through mascaras very quickly, especially as I normally opt for those of highstreet brands so tend to find they dry up fairly quickly so whenever my birthday or Christmas approaches I always put higher end mascaras on my wishlist. One of those this year was the YSL shocking mascara, I had heard plenty of positive things about this mascara so was very excited to both receive and try this mascara out. ===~~Price and Availability~~=== This item is fairly expensive, as with most YSL make up items. This mascara costs around £23 which to me seems a little excessive and is something as more of a treat compared to the cost if my usual mascara. Nonetheless the previous reviews I had read on this mascara suggested that this mascara was very much worth it's price tag so my expectations for this mascara were very high. Like most YSL make up items this is available from large department stores such as Debenhams, House of Fraser and John Lewis - where you can also order online. YSL make up products are also available in certain larger Boots stores, I often tend to buy most of my make up items from either Debenhams or Boots as then I can collect points and often these two stores have offers on. ===~~Packaging~~=== I could not write a review on this product without mentioning the packaging, alike all YSL packaging this mascara manages to look both classy and pretty at the same time in my make up bag. It's in gold metal packaging, which despite the fact it looks heavier due to it being metal it actually does not add any extra weight to my make up bag than any other plastic mascara would. The gold is not too bright or 'fake' looking and actually has some rose gold tones to in which makes it look yet more sophisticated. Apart from 'YSL' embossed on the tube the only other writing on this is 'shocking' in black font which I actually like and it does not make the tube look any less pretty. ===~~~The brush/ wand~~=== The brush itself is one of the soft bristle type brushes and is not plastic; I personally don't have a preference over the style or brushes however am aware some people prefer this style to that of a plastic one. The bristles are fairly evenly spaced, yet are very tightly compacted meaning that I find the brush collects a lot of mascara and all of the bristles of the wand are coated. Though I did find that in the first couple of applications the brush did pick up a little too much mascara, though I think this is mainly due to the fact it was new and I was still working out the best way to use it. ===~~Applying the mascara~~=== The first thing I noticed when applying this mascara was weirdly the scent. I tend to find most mascaras to have that 'mascara smell' and all smell very similar, but this mascara smells very fresh, almost fruity but not sweet at all. It is a lovely pleasant smell, though can only be smelt when you first begin to apply the mascara/ open the tube. This mascara does have quite a thick consistency to it, yet is not at all gloopy so actually glides onto the lashes very easily. Due to the size of the brush (basic size mascara brush, neither larger nor small) I found it the perfect size for capturing almost all my lashes, apart from the very inner corner ones but I find these are hard to reach with many mascara brushes. The brush seemed to pick up just the right amount of mascara in order to coat my lashes evenly which added but separation and definition to them without them looking clumpy or spidery. This mascara also applied just as well onto my bottom lashes and managed to capture the individual lashes just as well. Although I did find that sometimes the bristles picked up a little too much mascara for my bottom lashes, so I did have to wipe a little of the mascara off, nonetheless this was not a problem. ===~~Results~~== I was very impressed with the results of this mascara and would even go as far as saying I believe it to be one of the best mascaras I have ever used. The mascara has a very rich deep black pigmentation to it which I really like and it also had a glossy finish to it which made the lashes look really healthy and helped to make my eyes look more awake. This mascara had added considerable length to my lashes; hence the name vollume effet faux cils shocking. I have preciously used their normal 'effect faux cils' mascara and although I liked it I wasn't overly impressed with it, however this is definitely not the case with this one as it goes above and beyond my expectations. It also added volume and 'fullness' to my lashes, yet at the same time keeping them separated and defined which helped to achieve that look of false lashes. Due to this it allows my eyes to look really open and 'pop', especially due to the fact the mascara is very black in comparison with my eye colour. I also found that this mascara stayed in place all day and neither did it begin to look flakey or dry throughout the day. Although it is not claimed to be a waterproof mascaras have been in very windy conditions with this mascara on which makes my eyes water, along with that of snow and neither weather condition has this mascara become smudged or flakey around my eyes which pleasantly surprised me. I have worn this mascara all day and then through onto a nights before without feeling the need to reapply due to its staying power and the fact that I do not find the need to add false lashes with this mascara. Despite it staying power, I find this mascara is very easy to remove and can do so with my normal cleanser and toner and have not found the need to use anything else such as eye make up remover pads. It also does not require and harsh scrubbing and actually comes off quite easier with my cleanser. ===~~Overall~~=== Overall I have been very thoroughly impressed with this mascara and despite its fairly hefty price tag of £23 I actually believe I would repurchase it. Although I am not sure whether it is the equivalent to that of false lashes, it is definitely a more natural looking equivalent and I now happily go out with just this on on a night out whereas before I was a complete fake eyelash junkie! The only slightly disappointing about this mascara is that I do find it gets both used up and dries up quite quickly, which is something I tend not to have a problem with with other higher brand mascaras. I can only see this mascara lasting me around 3-4 months maximum, whereas I find many other to last a good six. Nonetheless I was still recommend this mascara for those who are after a longer, fuller yet defined lash - which is what most of us want!! Despite the fact it is on the pricey side and I can only see it lasting a short period I feel what this mascara achieves far outward that and for that reason I am awarding it 5 stars! Once again my apologies as have to send laptop BACK AGAIN for repair, but as soon as I have it back will edit all my latest reviews and amend spelling, punctuation, grammar etc!!xxx
I first discovered the Yves Saint Laurent 'Shocking' Mascara when looking at before and after photos on someone's blog who had reviewed the product. I was so impressed by the photos that I had to try it myself. I bought this at the YSL concession in Selfridges for £22, in shade Deep Black, this is for 6.4ml. It come in the standard gold YSL packaging, which is used on all their products. I think this gives a real luxurious feel to the products, who doesn't want to see some sparkle when they open their make up bags?! When using the mascara, it has quite a long wand compared to some of the mascaras on the market at the moment. The brush is quite a thuck brush which remains the same size, apart from where it slightly tapers at the end to use on the smaller lashes. I put one coat on and was already delighted to see the results. The mascara has a nice creamy texture, however the first few times I used it I did have a few mistakes so keep some cotton buds handy! The colour was a very intense black which I liked. It really lengthened my lashes and made them stand out. I used 3 coats and my eyelashes looked longer than with any other mascaras I used. I sometimes wear false lashes but don't feel I need to when I use this. It lasted all day until bedtime, and was easily removed with my usual baby wipes. A little tip I use to make my lashes look longer, it to run the mascara along just the ends of my eyelashes as this seems to add a bit to them. The only downside to this is I seem to get through it really quickly, and end up buying a new one every few months. I'm not sure if this is because I use it a lot, or because it has dried out quicker than some other mascaras. I do love this product, but because of the price I don't use it every day. It is a very luxurious formula so I like to wear it for nights out and special days.
I love wearing make up and in particular mascara. It is something that I will splash out on and I know that YSL is a good make so I purchased the Shocking Volume Mascara. What does the product do? The product promises to make the lashes big and dramatic. The formula and the specially designed wand combine to coat each lash giving them plenty of length and curl to leave your looking wide eyed. It also thickens the lashes and gives the appearance of false lashes. Available Shades The product actually comes in a lot of shades for a mascara. It has the black as you would imagine but these have been further split into Ashy Black, Deep Black and Bronze Black. You also have versions of black which have tinged of other colours like the blue Sea Black, purple Cherry Black and the red Cassius Obscure amongst others. I chose the Deep black because I like a really dark shade. Packaging and Price The product comes contained within a classy gold tube that is similar to other products by YSL. The difference with this one is that it has Shocking written along the length of it in black writing. The wand is attached to the lid and the brush is shaped like a helix with plenty of bristles which promises to catch all the lashes. The mascara doesn't come cheap and it will cost you around £20. It can be bought from department stores such as Boots and also from a variety of online websites. Application and Performance The product is easy to use and you apply it in the same way as you would apply any other mascara. By using a zig zag motion, the mascara does coat each lash nicely. The mascara actually does add a lot of length to my lashes... Not to the extent that they look fake but it does make them longer than most other mascaras which I have tried. It also does add some volume to the lashes and it manages to separate the lashes which makes my lashes look fuller. It doesn't clump the eye lashes together and two coats make the lashes look lovely and full of volume. I'm not really sure if it curls my lashes but I'm not too bothered about this as I have an eyelash curler for this purpose! The mascara stays put and doesn't flake off or smudge away so you aren't left looking tired or scruffy. The product is gentle on the eyes and it doesn't irritate me, even when I'm wearing my contact lenses. When it comes to the end of the day, the product is easily removed using my usual eye make up remover. Conclusion All in all, this is a fantastic mascara which manages to lengthen, volumise and separate the lashes. It it easy to apply and easy to remove, and it stays put in between without flaking or smudging. Even though this is an expensive product, I think it is worth every penny and it is a really high quality product which gives good results.
I bought this mascara after a friend recommended it to me... at first I have to admit that I was reluctant because Yves St Laurent is quite expensive... however, after I tried my friends on a night out, I decided that it might be worth investing in. The mascara is presented in a small thin box, gold and black with a little bow on. It even looks expensive! It is beautifully packaged and is not in a cheap plastic tube like most mascaras, it comes in a gold metal tube. The mascara brush is long and thick and therefore catches all eyelashes, ensuring good coverage. Only a few brushes is needed and my eyelashes immediately doubled in length and looked much thicker. I also put mascara on my bottom lashes and found that it was also very easy to get good coverage on my bottom lashes. The mascara doesn't smudge, doesn't make eyelashes droop or come off during the day. The only negative thing I would say is that it is a little difficult to remove even with make up wipes but i don't think this is such a bad thing because it least you know that it stays on well!
I had never looked into YSL products before as I knew they were pretty expensive, my friend bought this masacara for me as a birthday present and I was instantly in love. It came in a sleek, expensive looking, black and gold YSL gift box adorned with a YSL bow and ribbon and YSL printed tissue paper inside. The mascara was then presented in a gold cardboard box by itself alongside a small eyeliner pencil (which is AMAZING!) and a small bottle of YSL makeup remover which takes my makeup off very easily but I find it makes my skin feel greasy afterwards (although I'm guessing the greasy ingredient is what helps take it off so easily). I regularly read weekly magazines and like to investigate new products; being in need of a new mascara I opted for YSL's shocking mascara in black. With my new purchase on its way home, I couldn't wait to try it out. The packaging was gold and looked exquisite almost tempting and I was excited to say the least. I'd never before tried a YSL product so had high expectations of the brand and my goodness, it did not disappoint. Upon opening the new addition to my make up bag I inspected the mascara application brush. The brush is bushy and a lot 'heavier' than my previous mascara however I was determined not to be put off. I applied my first coat onto my eyelashes, without the use of an eyelash curler to see whether the product lived up to its 'shocking name'. It did. The initial application was easy and instantly dramatised my eyes, making my eyelashes look fuller and slightly curled. With first impressions high, I applied a second coat. It looked wonderful. Slightly addicted to my new addition, I continued to apply the mascara as part of my everyday make up. Upon application, I began to notice that the mascara had lost its fluidity somewhat and had slightly dried up. The application now took more time with small clumps appearing. With patience and perseverance, alongside the help of an eyelash comb I was able to restore my wonderfully dramatic eyelashes experienced at that very first application. I was addicted. The removal of the mascara is easy and upon cleansing does not leave you with a panda look! The only downfall is during the summer months or in a particularly hot climate, the mascara does run. If purchasing I would most certainly recommending a waterproof version. After trialling everyday for a week, the product is definitely best left for those special occasions or weekends, especially given the cost of the product. This is most certainly however one of the best mascaras ever used and is would for sure be recommend to any friends or family looking for that stocking filler or small gesture as a gift. Overall a great product that I can wait to purchase again. A must for any make up bag.
I couldn't wait to try this mascara out as it looked so luxurious and expensive in it's gold casing, I was unsure of the 'Shocking' writing down the side of the tube however having taken an interest in YSL I found that alot of their products are gold so if I were to buy other products the 'shocking' wrting on it would make it more distinct and easier to find in my makeup bag. The brush is fairly thin but quite bushy which is great as I find big sparse brushes often make my eyelashes stick together. Another good thing I noticed was the smell (I know this is weird...) but I find alot of mascaras have that horrible chemical smell whereas this YSL one smelt very pleasant and made me not even question putting it onto my eyelashes. This probably has no real benefit but it made me like the product even more none the less! It glided perfectly onto my lashes, making them thick and instantly dark, I wouldn't say the effect could be described as 'shocking' but it did also lift my eyelashes so they looked slightly curled which I love. I have found in the last month or so of using it, it has become slightly more difficult to apply because I think it may have dried up slightly so it goes a on little clumpy but with a bit of patience and one or two strokes from an eyelash comb they can still look as good as when I first used it This may be down to the face that it is about 7 months old now and you should replace mascara after about 6 months. This mascara is one of the more expensive peices of makeup I own and I try not use it everyday because of this and I don't want to use it up so quickly! I would not buy it for the price it is sold for by itself but I would if I found it in a little set like the one I was given which are often found in Boots or Debanhams.
Wow, what a pleasant surprise this mascara was! I have been tempted to buy a product from YSL for quite sone time but in all honestly, there's never really been anything that stood out to me enough for me to buy it. I wandered over to their concession in Selfridges and I was pleasantly surprised with what I found... I told the consultant I was looking for a mascara to give me thick and volumised eyelashes without clumping them together or giving me any need to finish with another type of mascara. Then she handed me this. As a recently launched product, it boasts the classic YSL logo un hold and it is very eye catching in the gold tube. On the tube, it simply states 'shocking' in a funky font that I was initially quite surprised at. I didn't really like the way it just seemed to have been plastered on the front of the tube as I thought it really detracted from the classy look of the product but it has since grown on me and now I actually quite like it. I think it gives the product a fun edge and appeals to a much wider audience. The mascara wand can be seen by twisting the lid and removing from the tube. It comes out with a plentiful amount of mascara on the top but not so much that it leaves a mess around the top of the tube. The brush has relatively thick bristles but is actually quite slim, so its easy to apply it precisely. It goes on really smoothly, not making the eyelashes wet but having maximum effect from the first stroke. I found my lashes looked extremely defined and very long after only a couple of strokes. This was a really important feature asvusually I have to build up quite a lot of product before it begins to look dramatic. But this gave me the look I was after without hardly any effort at all. Because of this, you can use it as both a day and evening product, making it versatile and suitable for all occasions. I purchased this for £23 from Selfridges and that seems to be the standard price from most retailers. Although it might be worth shopping around for a cheaper price, waiting for a sale or buying a sample sized product. I bought it in the black version and as far as I'm aware there is also a blue one. In conclusion, I would definitely recommend this mascara to anyone who wants an all round mascara for everyday use. It is fab for creating high definition in the lashes as well as volume and length so they really stand out.
