“ Brand: Yves St Laurent / Type: Mascara / Suitable for: Eye / What it does: volumizeses, „
I have the shortest, stubbiest eyelashes in the world ever, and so mascara is an essential item for me, especially one that will make my lashes look longer and fuller. I think that I've tried probably every premium mascara out there, some I love, some are OK, some are just a waste of money. This one I kinda really love, and I also kinda really hate!
I always buy black mascara, as I have dark brown lashes. The YSL Faux Cils mascara does come in a wide range of colours. It retails for £23.00 in most places, I would normally buy it duty free to save a few pounds though. I have been using this on and off for quite a few years now, and despite its faults I will continue to do so.
First the love:
This mascara absolutely definitely lives up to its claim - Luxurious mascara for a false lash effect - it definitely does what it says on the tin. This mascara is absolutely brilliant at turning my short stubby eyelashes into long luxurious 'false lash effect' eyelashes, in fact although I've been using this for years on and off now I still can't get over the transformation it makes to my lashes. This gives me long, intense, thick, glamorous jet black lashes. You can build the volume and definition up by adding another coat of mascara, one coat is more than enough, but for extra oomph I sometimes add another.
This is a perfect all day or all night mascara, it doesn't come off, no panda eyes! But it also happens to be really easy to wash off too, I just use my normal cleanser and water and it washes off easily enough. I tend to only use make up remover to take it off if I've had other heavy eye make up on as well.
Now the hate:
My gripe with this mascara is that it dries out and goes thick and clumpy in the tube after just a few months, this then clogs the brush and makes the mascara go on thick and clumpy as well. I find that I have to replace the tube before it's finished as it has become unusable. I think that for the price you pay for this, this is definitely my hate with this mascara.
So basically when it's good it's brilliant, in fact I don't think that you can get better if you want the false lash effect. But when it's started to dry out and clump in the tube, after an unacceptably short time for a premium mascara at £23.00 if you ask me, then it's pretty bad, in fact it's worse than some cheap mascaras.
I will continue to buy it as during those first few months you can't fault it, but I do buy it kinda begrudgingly as I know it won't last long and it's expensive for such a short period of use, especially as there's lots of mascara still actually left in the tube - it's just unusable!
I'm only going to give it 3 stars as I feel it should last longer, but the initial performance does warrant 5 stars.
I have had this mascara for around six months now and bought it as part of a set from YSL this mascara is the YSL volume effect faux cils.
Yves St Laurent mascara comes in the usual elegant gold tube with the YSL logo around the lid and tube join. It does look attractive in any make-up bag young or old yet has the ability to maintain it's class.
On opening my mascara I have to say I was a little disappointed, only because i was used to using various other named brands which advertise waves and flip brushes. This brush on the other hand was like original mascara wands from the early nineties and before, a straight all around brush of pretty much equal lengths. No wow and aah here then, but maybe YSL are just trying to say who needs all that flash.
When applying the mascara itself is the same as any other just carefully brush the eyelashes from the eyelid outwards.
I do find that I need to apply several coats to get a good volume, black look but I guess if you want something very descreet one coat may be just enough. This does surprise me somewhat as when you pull the brush out of the tube the actual mascara is very thick in texture. To this point there is a downside for me, the brush gets clogged up quite quickly and I find that I have to wipe it clean every now and again. This also is in regard to the tube join also where they screw together, it often gets a build up of mascara. I realise this is not a horrendous problem but it is a niggle which annoys me considering the price and brand.
That said I do not get any clumps on my eye lashes which is nice, no spider legs here! With regards to longevity, it does well I apply every morning and it is consistent until the lat afternoon when I reapply. If you touch your eyes a lot or remove an eyelash though you will find you are having to replenish the mascara more often as it does come off quite easily.
It is not waterproof particularly but it is not advertised as that, a little drizzle is ok but in a downpour you look like a panda. However it does not irritate my eyes but I am not particularly sensitive and it does not say whether it is any good for contact wearers.
The tube has a six month expiry as they apparently start to go off and potentially harbour bugs after that period but I have yet to finish a tube of mascara before the expiry date!
Overall it does a good job but it is by not perfect and is quite expensive compared to some more accessible brands in the high street.
The tube is 7.5ml or 0.25fl oz, available from many House of Fraser stores, debenhams, www.ebay.co.uk, www.amazon.co.uk and numerous other make-up websites and of course the YSL website www.ysl.co.uk
Cost...between £16 and £25 depending on where you buy.
