Jumper Medical Angelsound Fetal Doppler
Advantages: A brilliantr little device!!! :)
Disadvantages: May not work for impatrient people!!!!!!! lol
== Introduction ==
I am 31 weeks pregnant, and have some trouble feeling my baby sometimes, I have been into hospital for monitering 3 times now for it as I have worried so much over it. I was on the verge of asking the midwife if I could take a doppler home with me so I could listen to the heart of the baby at home if I thought I hadn't felt any movement in 24 hours when I saw this on Amazon.
I was very dubious about buying it as I had heard they can be awful, not pick up any heartbeat and worry you more than you did without feeling movement- but I couldn't resist buying it just as a means of trying to stay sane for the last 9 weeks of my pregnancy. I have heard millions of babies heart beats...ok a slight exaggeration, but I have been intuned with fetal hearts since I was 13 as I went to all my sisters antenatal appointments with her with her 3 kids, and then I got an ear for my own babies heart beat from the moment I first heard it, I like to think I am very good at finding it quickly too (I actually wanted to train as a midwife so it is something I take an interest in!), so I hoped I'd be reasonably good at finding the heart beat, but vowed to myself, if I didn't find the heartbeat on the first go that I wouldn't run off the the hospital, but would wait 12 hours and if I had felt no movement, THEN I would call the midwives.
So anyway...onto the product!
== What is it? ==
This is a home use fetal heart doppler, it is for use in pregnancy, from around 14-16 weeks and then throughout pregnancy. It works on basically the same principal as the dopplers used by the hospital staff throughout your pregnancy. Using ultrasound waves to penetreate your skin and placenta to bounce back sounds through headphones (or onto your computer via a lead), it will not only bring back sounds of the heart, but also of your own pulse, the pulse of your placenta (yes it does have one as blood runs through it), rumblings in your stomach, and also movements of the baby- so you do have to be very patient with the machine sometimes!!!
These Ultrasounds are supposed to be entirely safe- there is no evidence to the contary, but you may want to limit use to maybe once a week, or when your worried. It is entirely upto you though!
The doppler needs some kind of gel to help transmit the sound waves, whihc you can buy with the doppler, but I bought baby lotion oil which works very well and was only £1.50 for a large bottle!!! You could also use lubricant.
== The big question though, is does it work? ==
For me, yes. As I said the first time I used it, I was very dubious, but I used some gel and tried to locate baby by palpation (touching the stomach to try and find the head), but couldnt' and so just searched with the doppler, I found my baby under my hip, so a very awkward place! But within probably 5 minutes I was picking up a quiet but definitive baby heart beat (it sounds like galloping horses), I was quite impresed, but it was extremely quiet, so I put it away and decided to try again that night when baby is normally active for me.
Coming home that evening I got into bed and put more gel on my belly, I knew where baby was due to movement I could feel, and so found the heart in a matter of seconds!!! It was amazing, so loud and clear! My husband loved it too as he has only heard it a couple of times due to his working hours not complying to my antenatal appointments!
I ahve used the machine 4 times since I got it and have neevr had a problem!! But I do have to warn that I have heard of women who never found a heart beat using it, although it is rare, there have been a few caes where although nothing was wrong with the baby, they never heard a heartbeat through the machine, this could be because they were not using it right, or that they were too impatient, whihc is very likely as it does sometimes need patience, it can take around an hour sometimes to pick up a good heartbeat, especially before around 28 weeks, as the baby is just so small, they move around so much in the womb that they can be hard to track down.
== Warnings ==
This fetal heart doppler must never be used as a substitute for antenatal care with a midwife or other health provider. A heartbeat alone is not enough to know the baby is developing correctly, and so just because you hear a heart beating, it doesnt mean baby is the right size or that they are developing correctly. So never ever ever use this as a means of home treatment instead of going to a midwife or GP.
If you have not felt movement for 24 hours, or you have felt reduced movement, but hear a heartbeat, you should still see a midwife, again a heartbeat doesn't mean the baby isn't in distress, and as this monitor doesn't give you a beat per minute reading, you never know what is going on in there. So if you have any concerns of no movement at all, do not take this as everything is ok. You should feel at least 10 movements in a 12 hour period, but this may slow down in your last 8 weeks or so as baby is getting too big to move around in there!!!
Always follow instructions in the manual!
== How much is it? ==
The prices vary depending on where you go, I paid £25 for my AngelSounds and I find it is worth every penny!! :) But there are some used available on ebay for £18!!! A real bargain! Gel costs between £3 and £5 for a 250ml bottle, which is much cheaper than using KY jelly as I am using!!! So I would definitely look on Amazon for this gel!!
These are a great present for mums to be!!! Perfect for all the family to feel involved in the babies development and means reassurance during those weeks between antenatal appointments!!! :)
Summary: Personally I love this little machine and would recommend it to all mummy to be's!
