      Don't buy without trying them on first

      I bought these over the bump maternity leggings in grey from Next online when I was about 6 months pregnant and my ordinary clothes were becoming too tight. My local Next stores do not stock a maternity range, and so buying online was my only option. I was planning to buy another pair in black if these proved to be comfortable.

      In Next I am usually a size 14 or 16, and I opted for the size 14 on this occasion. Unfortunately these leggings were just too big and baggy; they were too long in the leg (and I am average height at 5'6'') and there was way too much room in the bump area. The result was a rather unbecoming penguin-like look, and a constant need to pull the leggings up over my bump.

      At that stage I thought that perhaps I would grow into them and I did continue to wear the leggings throughout my pregnancy. However, even by the end of my pregnancy my bump was not filling up the material. I don't think this was a sizing issue as I am never a size 12 in anything, and I would say that my bump was fairly average sized - it is almost just as if there was too much material.

      Having said this, the leggings were made with lovely soft material and they were quite comfortable (ignoring the sizing issue). Even after frequent washing and tumble drying these leggings refused to shrink, which of course is a good thing if they fitted correctly in the first place!

      Disadvantages

      Disappointing from Next.

      Whilst I was pregnant I bought a variety of maternity clothes from different brands and usually went for the cheapest options seeing as I knew I would not be wearing them for very long and that money was tight. I chose quite a lot from New Look which were lovely but I also did buy a few items from Next as a 'treat' to myself and what a treat these were! Very disappointing and not at all comfortable at all! I was regretful that I had spent my money on such a poor piece of clothing it is just a good job I didn't have to wear them for very long!

      === Buying the Next leggings ===

      I don't find that maternity clothes are that appealing, so many of them just look like big tents and with little style so when I went into Next it was lovely to see that they had tops and dresses that were colourful and had patterns on them. I was going to buy a top but my husband very kindly reminded me that I already had several tops and what I was short on was leg wear so I was sensible and instead of going for a lovely floral top I looked at the leggings instead. I now wish I'd stuck to a top!!

      I chose these leggings because they were over the bump ones. Some of the trousers I had were under the bump and these were fine but I was a little concerned that they would soon star to dig in a bit and that some of them after having been washed were starting to fall a bit short so didn't look the best. I thought it would be a change to buy over the bump ones. I usually fit in size 6-8 clothes so I bought the size 8 leggings. They were £12. The sizes started from 8 and went up to about 20 I think so a good range for lots of different shapes. There were 3 colour options too navy, grey and black. I went for black as I thought it would be more likely to go with the few maternity clothes I had.

      === Wearing them ===

      These leggings are made from 92% viscose which I don't even know what that is and 8% elastine. These two materials combined give a good stretchy effect which slide onto your legs and grip to your skin like leggings should. When I first put them on I found that they had that nice tight feeling like leggings do but that the top of them with the over bump stretchy bit was far from being tight. It was a really large section of material which was so baggy that when I put a top on I could see the baggyness of the bump section beneath it. I also noticed that they were quite long on me, it wasn't too long that it was a problem as I am quite tall but if you are petite or only wear flat shoes then you may struggle with them and may need to take them up.

      I thought I would give the leggings the benefit of the doubt and decided that perhaps the bump part was so baggy because my bump wasn't big enough yet. I Had thought, however, that the bump section would be more like the leggings so would cling to the bump and just expand over time as the bump grew but it didn't look like that at all, it looked like a great big baggy bit of material with no support that was just getting in the way. I didn't feel comfortable in these at all and felt very self conscious indeed. I hoped that as pregnancy progressed they would fit better.

      === The test of time ===

      Over time, however, it didn't improve, even when my bump was pretty large and in the last few weeks these leggings still felt far too big in the tummy area and also in the thigh too, it looks like these are designed with a bit too much space! I know that body shape changes a lot whilst you are pregnant but these leggings over compensate, the thigh area had lots of room in it which just made my legs look fat and then the bump area was just overly baggy and didn't support the bump in anyway. I just kept hoping that because they are Next that they must work out eventually and be comfortable and fit properly but they just didn't.

      Even after many washes and when the bump was it's biggest these never fit me in a comfortable manner. I was so disappointed by them. They made me feel frumpy and were not at all discreet with the great big flapping over bump part! I took to only wearing them when I didn't have to go out anywhere but never really wanted to it just happened to be when everything else was in the wash that I turned to these.

      I wore them a few times and asked my husband his opinion he kept saying it looked like I needed to grow into them and asked where there was so much slack in the thigh/groin area. It was as though they weren't pulled up high enough. It really wasn't a good look and for my husband to notice these things it must have been rather obvious!

      === In summary ===

      In terms of quality they are not very good at all because they are not well designed. They did get washed a lot and didn't lose their 'shape' although there wasn't much shape to begin with but the material didn't bobble up at least so that is something! They were soft too which was nice against my skin but that is about all that is positive about them.

      I was very disappointed by these. I know in future should I ever need maternity wear again that I shall not be heading to Next for my leggings! Leggings are supposed to be comfort clothes but not these that's for sure! I hope that they get a new designer in to make them more comfortable and a better design because they are not very good at all at the moment. Save your money and shop elsewhere.

      In all 3 of my pregnancies I decided that I was going to be comfortable fat but comfortable so I decided on leggings and a long top I practically lived in these for the 27 months I was pregnant between all 3 children. For the first pregnancy to be honest i did not get that big and was able to stay in non maternity clothes, for the second at 8 months I had to go and buy some maternity clothes I just could not put it off any longer.

      While shopping for little one in my local next I seen a maternity section where I found some over the bump maternity leggings reduced to £8 a bargain in my eyes so I brought these in my normal size 10 and also a nice long top to go with it. They felt well made like all of nxt clothes so i was sure they would be fine. I got home and could not wait to try them on the next day a new outfit always puts me in a good mood.

      So the next day I tried them on and I was shocked. I always shop at next as to me they have good value for money and the clothes fit well but not this time. They fitted me on the bump sat well and were very comfy but as soon as they reached the legs they hung rather than being tight to the leg like leggings do I could not believe it. I was thinking of exchanging them for a smaller size but as they fitted so well on the bump there was no chance I could squeeze in to a 8.

      I decided on uses them just in the house as I was not going to waste £8 so they then became my house trousers. I would not recommend these they just do not sit how leggings should a surprising let down from next.

        Thing is... when your pregnant no matter how many people tell you "You look blooming" I just couldn't help feeling frumpy! (Before i discovered Asos did maternity!) So i was desperate to find some clothes that i would feel like me again in.

        This is before i discovered the joys of internet shopping! So finding maternity wear was awful! I trawled my ever expanding bump around the high street attempting to find something that was stylish, and made to fit a bump!

        I popped into next... in all honesty i was going to buy myself some shoes or a handbag to cheer me up, But there in front of me was a maternity section! Whoo!

        I bought the leggings in question, a pair of jeans and a smock type top and didnt try them on in the shop.... a BIG mistake!

        The next day i was quite excited to show of my new stylish look to the girls at work but was so upset with the leggings i broke down in tears! This was probably hormones too..... I won't blame next for everything!

        I am built very small, i am 5"2 and usually a size 8, so buying these leggings in a size 8 expected them to fit me but they were huge! They made me feel awful as theres nothing worse than baggy leggings!

        I was also dissappointed with the quality of the leggings, around the bottom they were almost see through! Although I only paid £10.00 for these i expected a bit more quality from Next! ( I will say the jeans were OK and the smock top was lovely though.)

        I reall would not reccommend these to any execting mums!

        Avoid these leggings

        One of the things I didn't like about being pregnant was the restricted wardrobe options that are available to you, although things are much better for the expectant mother today than they were for generations past. I was pleased to discover that many of my favourite high street shops have maternity sections with some really lovely items in them. Topshop, H & M, Dorothy Perkins and Next all have a maternity section and I found these shops an absolute godsend in my last few months of pregnancy.

        I decided pretty early on in my pregnancy, that comfort was a must. I was not prepared to have trousers that fell down and as a result, invested in several pairs of 'over the bump' trousers which I had previously shunned. I also wanted a pair of leggings which would be comfortable and enable me to wear long tops and short dresses.

        It didn't take long for me to find these leggings on the Next website for £10. I was really pleased that they were full length and 'over the bump'. I paid around £3 for delivery. As always with Next, the leggings were delivered the next day. I was really excited about putting them on and having lots more wardrobe options available to me as a result. Sadly, only disappointment was to follow.

        I had ordered the leggings in a size 10 which is a size smaller than my usual 12, but have found Next sizing to be a little large. However, my first impression of the leggings was that they were baggy! Not a good look for leggings. I wondered whether I was just being paranoid as my self confidence was a little lower than normal owing to the enormous bump I was carrying around. Fortunately, a well-timed visit to my candid sister revealed that this was not the case, and yes, the leggings did look awful; 'Like elephant skin' as I recall her saying.

        I returned the leggings after this and got a refund. However, this did not include the £3 I had spent on postage. In hindsight I think as the product was of such a poor quality I could have reasonably asked for this too.

        The story does have a happy ending. I went to H & M and bought a much better pair for £7, which I still wear to this day (even though Baby Frank is now 5 months old).
