Silentnight Ivy Box Pillowtop Single Mattress
by kissandmakeup
Personally, although I know they are probably very good for my back and posture etc etc, I am just not keen on very firm mattresses. I need a bed that I can snuggle down into of an evening, not one that is like laying on a plank of wood. So when I was looking for a new mattress I very much liked the idea of the ones which have a quilted ... / padded top, as I liked the idea of sort of having a duvet on top of my mattress!
I am fortunate enough to have a friend who works for the Silentnight company and therefore I did not have to pay full price for this as they were able to get me a family & friends discount. However, I still paid £250 for a king size one of these, so expect to pay in excess of that if you are buying directly from Silentnight or from a shop.
I bought the mattress at the same time as a bed frame and this mattress, on the underside, has grips which stop it from sliding about on the wooden bed frame. As it was a Silentnight frame that I also bought it worked well with it, as the slats on the bed frame also have these little grips. I don't know if this feature would work quite as well on another brand of bed frame, but it certainly couldn't do any harm!
I have absolutely loved this mattress, it is so very comfy without being too soft that it sage right in and eventually gives you a bad back! The quilted top definitely helps the feeling of comfort. It is supportive enough whilst still making me feel snug! The quilted top also helps you to stay nice and warm in bed - I guess for those of you who are naturally quite warm or who don't like being too warm in bed then this may not be ideal, especially in the summer, but for me as someone who is always cold and often needs the aid of an electric blanket and a hot water bottlke in the winter it is lovely!
One criticisn I do have of the 'gripped' underside of this mattress is that it means that you cannot turn your mattress as much as you would be able to do with other ones. I am aware that to keep a mattress in good order you should turn it every so often, to ensure an even distribution of wear / weight, however wioth this mattress you can only turn it one of two ways, you cannot flip it over and therefore have it four different ways. I hope that makes sense?! This has meant that it has now started to show signs of wear and indentation on one side of the mattress and that I really can't do much about it, so I suppose this will mean that it will have a shorter 'life expectancy' than some.
All in all however I have been very pleased with it, it has been perfect for my needs and (even ignoring the slight discount) it was not extortionately expensive. The grips have their pros and cons as does the quilted top but so long as you bear this in mind before purchase you can figure out if this is the perfect mattress for you too! Silent Night Impress Memory Foam Mattress Topper
by Matheson80
Have you ever had one of those years when everything expensive you own needs replacing? Well I seem to be going through that this year, with a multitude of essential things all breaking down, melting, leaking, etc, you get the idea...
Well, one of the items I need to replace is my mattress, but to be honest, I can't afford a ... decent new one at the moment (its low down on a looong list). One day a friend recommend a mattress topper, and to be honest I had never heard of this before, but it sounded like a reasonable short term solution to my lumpy mattress woes.
Having no idea where to start looking I went with a quick search with the first company that sprung to mind: Silentnight. Who doesn't love sleepy hippos with small, feathered bed partners? I quickly found their 'Impress' range of memory foam mattress toppers, available in all standard sizes from single up to king-size. The retail price for these are about £80, but after a bit of shopping online, the best price I could find was ASDA Direct, at £45 for the standard double size.
Once I got the topper delivered, I eagerly stripped the bed (I think it's the first time I have ever 'eagerly' stripped & made the bed...) and took a look inside the box. Within you will find a very tightly rolled sheet of memory foam, and a washable fabric sheet with elasticated corners. The sheet is used to cover over the foam before you put down a conventional bed-sheet.
The mattress topper itself was a rather mildly disappointing looking thing once I unrolled it and lay it out on the mattress. Although I'm not quite sure what I was expecting to be honest. It sort of looks like I have rolled a large sheet of pastry over my mattress. However, if I had rolled a bit of pastry over the mattress, I would have at least made sure it reached all the edges, which this sheet doesn't. It stops about an inch short on both long sides, which is a bit annoying, but since I don't sleep that close to the edge (unless my girlfriend starts elbowing me in her sleep) it isn't a major issue. According to the packaging, memory foam was developed by NASA, so it must be good...(I was going to insert a joke about expecting a heavenly sleep, but I decided against it)
After I placed the topper and cover over my mattress, for the sake of all Dooyoo readers I had to test it out. So I took upon myself the hardship of lying on my bed and rolling over a couple of times. I may also have dozed for a few minutes. Before fitting the topper, sleeping on my mattress was a bit like camping and finding a few stones underneath your roll mat. Quite a few springs had started to stick up, and had a bad habit of sticking right into your kidneys, or other tender areas, but I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised that although the topper was a bit thinner than I was expecting, it covered over the lumps well, and to a certain degree made it feel like a new mattress. The memory foam moulds to your shape, and I found this quite comfortable whilst sleeping on my side. My partner also agreed that it was far comfier than before. I have also read that memory foam is good for people that suffer from bad backs, as it allows you to sleep in a more natural position. Since I don't tend to have many issues with my back, I can't really comment on this, but I can certainly understand how it could help, since I do feel the mattress supports me a bit better now.
One side effect I have noticed is that the memory foam layer makes it far warmer in bed now. I can only assume that the foam better insulates your body heat, rather than it spreading through the mattress. Whilst this is fine now that it is getting colder, I imagine I will get over-warm come next summer (yes, it will be warm next summer, I promise...)
Overall, I have been pretty pleased with my Silentnight mattress topper. To be honest, it will never be as good as a brand new memory foam mattress, but it does work well as a short term stop-gap. It has defiantly improved the comfy-ness of my mattress, and has smoothed over the lumps and bumps. I do worry about how long it will last before it starts to get too flattened to work effectively, but hopefully by then I will have bought a new mattress. Read the complete review |

Silentnight Anti-allergy Mattress Protector
by MsTricia
My daughter went straight from a cot bed into a double bed as when we moved into our new flat 2 years ago it came furnished with one. When we bought ourselves a new kingsized bed, we transferred her to her "princess" bed (aka our old double bed lol!). She sleeps terrible anyway, rolling all about the place so she needs all the ... extra space really! We bought this mattress protector in Debenhams for around £15 ages ago and we thought this was really good value.
In terms of thickness I was slightly disappointed with this mattress protector as I have had a sainsburys one, and currently have the argos value brand on our kingsize bed and the thickness of this Silent night mattress protector isn't particularly much different! It is a slightly padded and quilted sheet, with the usual elastic bandings which secure around the corners of the mattress to keep it in place. The elasticated bands are good as they stay in place efficiently across the mattress and are easy to fit on, as with my other brands I have had to fight and stretch and battle to get the mattress protector into position and stay put!
The product is designed to be non-allergenic, so beneficial for sufferers from allergies, asthma and eczema. My daughter does not suffer from any of these but as she is so young, in my eyes she has sensitive skin and so always could do with some extra protection. I have found this mattress protector bodes well with her, and I like to think it serves well at reducing the effect of dust mites as she has had no adverse reactions.
Sadly this is not a waterproof mattress protector which I would have benefited from but nevertheless she doesn't really have accident's at night, it's more the odd spill of water which she has by her bed at night time which causes most mess!
Overall, this is a reasonable mattress protector, and it sells on amazon for a more cost efficient price of £8.99 which if I had bought it at this price I'd have been much happier! It looks and feels a bit basic and so I think the £15 we paid was a bit steep, but for someone who wants the peace of mind of protecting their mattress and for anyone with allergies it's good to give this a go.
