I've been in need of a new mattress for a while now but, unfortunately, I've been in need of a lot of other stuff more thus haven't been able to afford it. The mattress I currently have is an old open coil and has worn rather thin meaning I can feel every single spring it contains. Fed up of waking up with neck ache and back ache after tossing and turning trying to get comfortable every night I decided to invest in a mattress topper to give me a little bit more comfort until I can afford a new mattress. My Sister is obsessed with memory foam. If something comes in a memory foam version she'll have it. She even has memory foam slippers and bras! I myself had never had any real experience with memory foam but it certainly seemed very popular and my Sister promised me I wouldn't regret it if I purchased a memory foam mattress topper. So I did. There were loads of options when I was browsing but I decided to go for a Silentnight one as this is a reputable brand when it comes with bedtime comfort and I felt I could trust this one to be a good fit, comfortable and of high quality. I purchased the topper from Argos were I paid £63.99 for the double version. It's also available in single for £49.99 and kingsize for £79.99. The topper comes rolled up in a plastic wrapping similar to the way a duvet is packaged. The blue and white wrapping shows the Silentnight logo and gives plenty of information about the topper. The double sized measures 56x76inch and is 2.5inch thick. We're told the topper will fit any standard sized mattress and will continuously return back to its original shape. We're also informed this this topper can help 'relieve pressure, back pain and aching joints' as it 'moulds perfectly to the contours of your body for ultimate support'. Upon opening the topper you do get a whiff of a bit of chemical type smell although this is nothing major and leaving the topper to air for a few hours should get rid of this smell completely. I personally just put the topper on and made my bed straight away and once the sheet and the duvet where over the top of it I couldn't smell it anymore anyway. I found the topper was easy to roll out flat and it returned to its original flat shape in no time at all with very little effort on my part! A few creases remained in parts but I placed the topper on my bed in the morning and by night time when I was ready to get in those creases had flattened out too. The thick layer of foam felt fitted the size of my double mattress perfectly so no complaints there. The topper also comes with a 'cover' which is pretty much a cream fitted sheet with 'silentnight' printed on it several times. As there's no way of securing the topper onto the mattress once you've got it into position this sheet does a really nice job at holding it in place (as would any fitted sheet really)! I have to admit I was quite excited to get in bed that evening and test out my new mattress topper. I put it on the morning before I had to go to work so I didn't have time to give it any sort of a try before leaving the house that day and spent the majority of my working hours daydreaming about my bed! The topper had certainly felt quite soft and comfortable when I was laying it out on top of my mattress but I wasn't sure how much of an effect it would have had on the overall comfort of my bed. I was in for a real shock when I did eventually get in the bed. This 2.5inch thick piece of foam entirely transformed my mattress. It just felt like a new, completely different mattress. I cannot feel a single spring underneath and I never in a million years expected that result! I have a firm mattress and the topper has allowed my mattress to keep its firmness which I love as I hate a mattress which seems to suck me into the centre when I get in bed! The memory foam topper keeps heat under my duvet when I'm sleeping and I have noticed a significant temperature boost when I've woken up since using this topper. For the first few months this was a welcomed advantage although these last two or three nights the weather has warmed up and I've been waking up feeling really hot, I'll definitely be looking into a solution for this for when the proper summer comes. All in all though I've found this to be the best £60 I've ever spent. I honestly don't even feel like a need a new mattress now! I will of course get one eventually but I'm certainly in no hurry now I've had this topper so it's saved me quite a lot of money! It's made my desperately uncomfortable bed into a joy to sleep in. It's cosy, soft, comfortable and I've yet to wake up with back ache or neck ache. Even my dog seems to be sleeping better at the bottom of my bed now! If you're thinking about buying a new mattress I'd strongly recommend giving this ago first, you might just save yourself a nice sum of money.
Until recently, suffered from many things. One was an extremely uncomfortable mattress, very tough with no space for anything. For someone's natural position being the "foetus", on my side, I always wake up with a bad arm, with almost no oxygen in it at all! I decided, after being paraded with adverts and recommendations I decided to take a leap of faith and opt for a memory foam mattress topper. It works very well, simply place it on top of your mattress, based on your mattress size. It's quite thick, and at my first night's sleep, I fell in love. I automatically went in to my favourite position, still fearing the worst, to find the mattress dip under my arm, perfectly supporting me. It is incredibly soft, but you won't fall in. It's also breathable, so you won't have a panic attack when you roll over, face on mattress! It's incredibly warm, and I fell asleep with what I recall as around 15 minutes. I woke up, not wanting to get out of bed, but when I did, the foam quickly returned to its original position. It is compatible with any body, and insomniac or not, this is a must buy!
WHAT IS IT? A foam topper to go on worn or uncomfortable mattresses. They come in single, double and king size. HOW DO YOU USE IT? When it's new the mattress topper comes rolled up in a box and you have to air it for a few hours for the foam to expand and the topper to get to its full 2.5cm thickness. When you have done this you lie it flat on your bed and pull the elasticated corners into place to secure the topper to your mattress. You should get all of the little creases out of the cover because even a very small crease can be uncomfortable under the sheet. DOES IT WORK This Silent Night mattress topper is made of memory foam and it is very effective. When I lie in my bed at night it feels very much more comfortable than the mattress and I sleep a lot more soundly since I bought it. The foam cushions my body and because of me being a heavy sleeper I stay in one position while I am sleeping so the foam shows the outline of my body faintly when I get up but by the time I have showered it has gone flat again so I know the foam works properly. It helps me to get comfortable in bed because I cannot feel the springs and our uncomfortable mattress through it. My mattress is not very old so it has saved us from having to replace it very early. WHAT I THINK I like that this mattress topper does not move around when I am in bed because the elastic on the corners is strong and moulds around the corners of my mattress. It doesn't wrinkle either and that makes it comfortable. I like that the cover is removable and you can put it into the washing machine because that is good for hygiene and it means I can keep it clean. 2.5cm is the right thickness I think and it is still as thick as it ever was. The foam is very soft and for the first few times I slept on it I could feel that I was on something different to my own mattress but I got used to it very quick and now I don't notice it at all. I am going to buy my daughters one for their beds because they are separated bunk beds so have got thin mattresses. Those are single size but you can buy this Silent Night mattress topper in double bed size too. ANYTHING ELSE My king size mattress topper cost £75 but is a bit cheaper in price now. The single ones are £39 and I think that is very cheap compared to the price of new mattresses. 5 Dooyoo Stars. P
Have you ever had one of those years when everything expensive you own needs replacing? Well I seem to be going through that this year, with a multitude of essential things all breaking down, melting, leaking, etc, you get the idea... Well, one of the items I need to replace is my mattress, but to be honest, I can't afford a decent new one at the moment (its low down on a looong list). One day a friend recommend a mattress topper, and to be honest I had never heard of this before, but it sounded like a reasonable short term solution to my lumpy mattress woes. Having no idea where to start looking I went with a quick search with the first company that sprung to mind: Silentnight. Who doesn't love sleepy hippos with small, feathered bed partners? I quickly found their 'Impress' range of memory foam mattress toppers, available in all standard sizes from single up to king-size. The retail price for these are about £80, but after a bit of shopping online, the best price I could find was ASDA Direct, at £45 for the standard double size. Once I got the topper delivered, I eagerly stripped the bed (I think it's the first time I have ever 'eagerly' stripped & made the bed...) and took a look inside the box. Within you will find a very tightly rolled sheet of memory foam, and a washable fabric sheet with elasticated corners. The sheet is used to cover over the foam before you put down a conventional bed-sheet. The mattress topper itself was a rather mildly disappointing looking thing once I unrolled it and lay it out on the mattress. Although I'm not quite sure what I was expecting to be honest. It sort of looks like I have rolled a large sheet of pastry over my mattress. However, if I had rolled a bit of pastry over the mattress, I would have at least made sure it reached all the edges, which this sheet doesn't. It stops about an inch short on both long sides, which is a bit annoying, but since I don't sleep that close to the edge (unless my girlfriend starts elbowing me in her sleep) it isn't a major issue. According to the packaging, memory foam was developed by NASA, so it must be good...(I was going to insert a joke about expecting a heavenly sleep, but I decided against it) After I placed the topper and cover over my mattress, for the sake of all Dooyoo readers I had to test it out. So I took upon myself the hardship of lying on my bed and rolling over a couple of times. I may also have dozed for a few minutes. Before fitting the topper, sleeping on my mattress was a bit like camping and finding a few stones underneath your roll mat. Quite a few springs had started to stick up, and had a bad habit of sticking right into your kidneys, or other tender areas, but I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised that although the topper was a bit thinner than I was expecting, it covered over the lumps well, and to a certain degree made it feel like a new mattress. The memory foam moulds to your shape, and I found this quite comfortable whilst sleeping on my side. My partner also agreed that it was far comfier than before. I have also read that memory foam is good for people that suffer from bad backs, as it allows you to sleep in a more natural position. Since I don't tend to have many issues with my back, I can't really comment on this, but I can certainly understand how it could help, since I do feel the mattress supports me a bit better now. One side effect I have noticed is that the memory foam layer makes it far warmer in bed now. I can only assume that the foam better insulates your body heat, rather than it spreading through the mattress. Whilst this is fine now that it is getting colder, I imagine I will get over-warm come next summer (yes, it will be warm next summer, I promise...) Overall, I have been pretty pleased with my Silentnight mattress topper. To be honest, it will never be as good as a brand new memory foam mattress, but it does work well as a short term stop-gap. It has defiantly improved the comfy-ness of my mattress, and has smoothed over the lumps and bumps. I do worry about how long it will last before it starts to get too flattened to work effectively, but hopefully by then I will have bought a new mattress.
When Mark and myself moved into our house 3 years ago we took the double bed I had used at home, it was a few years old but we figured it would do for a while and save us a bit of cash. But 3 years on and the mattress is starting to get a bit lumpy and past its best, we still had some cash which we received as wedding gifts and decided to buy a new mattress, however after reading a few reviews and speaking to a couple of friends we opted for a memory foam mattress topper instead, it was cheaper than a decent mattress and everyone I spoke to said how good they were. We opted for the Silent Night Impress Memory Foam Mattress Topper which we bought from Tesco Direct as we also had some clubcard vouchers to add to the cash too. The Topper came packed in a large box which has the Silent Night hippo logo across the front and below this is an image of a hand pressed into foam. The front of the box also informs the customer that this is the Impress Deluxe Memory Foam Topper and it is " extra thick, luxurious, temperature sensitive and made from memory foam for superior comfort". The topper is made from 100% Polyurethane Memory Foam and the cover which you also get is 100% polyester, this is machine washable and suitable for the tumble drier. My topper is a double and measures approximately 193cm's x 137cm's and is 5cm's deep, you can also get a 2.5cm's deep one too. The memory foam moulds itself to your body and distributes the weight evenly reducing pressure on hips, the back and shoulders. The memory Topper is a creamy colour and fits nicely over the mattress, you then put your fitted sheet or mattress protector if you use one on the bed as normal. The fitted sheets I have fit nicely over the topper but if you have fitted sheets that are a bit tight you may find it a bit of a battle to fit them on. Looking at the topper on the bed I did wonder how much difference it would actually make to the mattress, I was pleasantly surprised. The mattress topper is absolutely lovely to lay on, we cant feel the old lumpy mattress at all, it makes the bed feel like its brand new. The memory foam is so comfortable, its soft yet supports the body. I have a problem with my lower back and often used to wake up in pain with a very stiff back, since we've had the topper this has been considerably better and both Mark and myself sleep a lot sounder. I have been really pleased with the Silent Night Memory Foam Mattress Topper its made such a difference to our bed and to my back, I would certainly recommend it to anyone who suffers aches and pains, its really comfortable and although feels nice and soft to lay on its very supportive. Tesco currently have this on their Tesco Direct website for £100.00 and in my personal opinion its worth every penny.
On a trip to Australia last year my husband and I had spent a night in a pretty swanky hotel where all the beds had memory foam mattresses. Both of us were blown away by the feel of it and I determined to try and get one for us (at a reasonable cost!) when we got home. Not long afterwards a Groupon deal came up where you could get any size for £69. As at that time the recommended retail price for a standard double was around £140 this was a great bargain and I ordered one straight away. When it came I was amazed it fitted in what seemed quite a small box, I quickly realised that it arrives VERY tightly rolled and secured and that you will NEVER be able to get it back to this size/shape once you release it! Mine also came with a bonus protector valance which fits over the foam sheet and holds it to the top of your mattress. I actually found that because of the oddly dense texture of the memory foam it actually tends to cling to the mattress fabric wherever it sits and there is little need for the cover - but I use it anyway to ensure no marks or stains affect the foam. This mattress topper is approximately 3 inches thick and whilst this will not give the same feeling as an entire mattress made of memory foam, the difference you will feel going from a standard mattress to this is impressive. I still (some 8 months on) find it makes a massive difference to the comfort of our bed and I miss it whenever we sleep in a normal bed elsewhere. The support and the feeling of comfort and cosiness are very enjoyable, for the first few weeks I found it astoundingly difficult to get out of bed at all in a morning! People do say that memory foam smells funny and certainly in the first week or so I could smell the weird, synthetic, plastic like aroma which had been very distinct when it came out of the original packaging. Needless to say that within a few weeks this had dissipated entirely and I did not find it so much of a bother that it would put me off using it or buying memory foam again. My only slight gripe - and it is something I am only really noticing for the first time in the last month or so - is that in warmer weather it does tend to store and reflect the heat so it is trickier to get cool. This does not bother me too much but if you are someone who runs at a hot temperature or finds this a problem at night then it might be worth considering. All in all I would definitely recommend this if you do not want the expense of a full memory foam mattress, to me it really makes a world of difference and it is well worth the money. Annoyingly, although when I bought it £69 was a bargain I see you can now pick this up for around the £50 mark as standard, probably because there are more around to choose from. Silent Night are an established brand and I believe that this is a quality product so if you are shopping around for one do look out for this make. I promise you - once you have tried one of these toppers you will never go back to a normal mattress again!
When I bought my bed I couldn't quite afford to buy the memory foam mattress that I originally wanted as the base worked out expensive so I thought that I would treat myself to the next best thing and buy a memory foam mattress topper instead. I bought it from Very.co.uk and it cost me £99 for the double sized one. There were loads of cheaper ones available but I thought that if I couldn't get the whole mattress the least I could do was to buy a decent topper from a well-respected company. To be honest I am glad that I forked out that little bit extra for this one as my sister bought a cheaper one and while it was good for a while it hasn't retained its sponginess and shape like this one. The topper is 2.5 cm thick which didn't sound a lot to me when I ordered it and when I unrolled it I wasn't sure it was going to be thick enough to make much of a difference to my bed but how wrong I was. You just put the topper on top of your old mattress and then put your mattress protector and fitted sheets over it I did have to end up buying some new fitted sheets as I found that when this and my mattress protector were on my bed the sheets were a little tight to fit properly anymore. Even though I originally thought that it was going to be too thin to be of much use I was completely wrong and as soon as I lay down on it for the first time it was like lying down on a new bed. The mattress felt like a completely different one and was no longer hard and uncomfortable. The memory foam really does mold to my body and help me sleep better. It also helps with my occasional bad back and since I have had it I am sleeping much better than I used to. As I mentioned my sister bought a cheaper one than mine around about the same time and hers seems to have lost its bounce whereas mine still feels really soft and supportive and whereas hers just looks flat mine still bounces back to its original shape every time I leave my bed. I would highly recommend the impress mattress topper to everyone who would like a memory foam mattress but can't afford one. It may not be quite as good but it is a fraction of the price and even with just this small topper it will feel like a new bed.
When new our mattress cost almost £400, it's a king size bed and was a 'treat' to ourselves after my waters broke on our previous mattress - Mark (being a woman-nerd) was repulsed by it from that point on (ha!) so I knew I was going to get what I'd wanted for months: a new mattress! I searched long and hard for our current mattress, so to find it uncomfortable after just eleven months was irksome to say the least - even without taking the cost into consideration I didn't want to replace it so soon as it's a fab mattress. Firm and bouncy, a made-to-measure fit for the bed and incredibly supportive for all areas of my body. The issue is that we can feel the springs to a degree, and also a few of rows of stitching are slightly too raised - I had a feeling that a mattress topper would sort this out and after dismissing a £39 topper in B&M decided to splash out on this Silentnight Impress one. It cost £125 six months ago and has literally transformed our bed! While we have the king size mattress topper, it's also available in single and double sizes with not a huge difference in the prices. When new the topper comes packed in a smaller than expected box, before use you need to air it to allow the foam to expand and reach its 5cm depth - I did this over the banister and left it airing for around ten hours before putting it on the bed. It fit my mattress perfectly from the outset and has kept its shape well so far, it's machine washable and is best dried over the line in the open air - at a push you can dry the topper over a warm (not hot) radiator, although I find this method of drying leaves the foam 'feelably' harder than when air dried. I'm 100% impressed with the topper, it does exactly what it promises and has made bedtime a million times more comfortable. It feels firm when I first lie down but gradually the mattress topper is reacting to your body height and the foam is moulding itself to fit your shape; you can't feel it happen as it's a fairly slow process, but suddenly you'll notice you're feeling even more comfortable than you were before - and this is the moment when the topper will have begun to work it's magic. Mark's a really fidgety sleeper but I've noticed this has lessened since I bought the topper, Silentnight actually claim that this is the case but I only found that out tonight - I can honestly say it's true though as I'm hardly disturbed at all these days (or nights!) by him shifting around erratically in his sleep. During the day the mattress topper levels itself out again to a degree, not completely as that would defeat the object of using 'Memory Foam' but enough that you don't have to try and force yourself into exactly the same position as the previous night when sleep-time comes. I remember it took a few nights for the topper to really start being ultra-comfortable, it felt like it was being broken in like a pair of shoes but now feels wonderful from the moment I get into bed. It stays put on the mattress beautifully and only moves when I want it to, I turn ours every week and with pretty regular washing I'm surprised it's still in the same condition as when it was new - which is more than I can say for a much cheaper unbranded mattress topper we had for our daughters bed which looked like an old rag after a month! For this reason I wholeheartedly recommend this Silentnight Impress Mattress Topper; it's just fab! Obviously not everyone is going to need or want a mattress topper, but if you have a good quality mattress that is lacking in the comfort stakes this is a perfect way of giving it a new lease of life. It's not the cheapest available by any stretch of the imagination but I've been amazed by the quality of this particular topper, it makes settling down to sleep a pleasure and has been worth every penny in my (and Marks!) opinion!
I have had trouble sleeping for quite a while now and my bed and mattress are probably past their best. I found myself in a situation where I couldn't afford to replace them and was talking to my friend who suggested I try the Silentnight impress memory foam mattress topper which she had purchased and loved. I had a look online and found that it was selling for £49.99 on the Asda website and so I decided to take the plunge towards the end of last year. The Silentnight memory foam mattress topper came delivered in a large blue cardboard box which is instantly recognisable as a Silentnight product as it has the chilled out hippo in stripy pyjamas on the box! The mattress topper isn't too heavy but the box is a good size and so I would say just be mindful of this when you are getting it upstairs. When I opened up the box I was hit with that smell that seems to just come from memory foam products and immediately wondered would I be able to sleep on it! Luckily the smell does settle down and wasn't really apparent by the time bed time came around. The topper is folded in the box and so you do need to lay it out on a flat surface to allow it time to plump up and settle and so I just laid it on my bed for a good few hours before making up my bed. I was surprised really that it wasn't thicker when I had it laid out but this was my own fault really as I was aware I was buying a topper which was 2.5cm thick and in hindsight I probably would have gone for something thicker if I were to buy it again. With the mattress topper you also get a Silentnight fitted sheet which goes over the top of the topper and your mattress to hold them down nicely. This is washable at 40 degrees and so you can keep things fresh. I placed the topper on to my mattress and then fitted the Silentnight sheet around both that and my mattress. The sheet fits well but does sometimes lift up and need adjusting if you have had a particularly rough night or something. I placed my normal fitted sheet over the top of the Silentnight one just for a bit of extra security. When bed time came I have to say I was very impressed initially when I got in to bed as I seemed to sink in to the topper but be supported at the same time and so I did feel very comfortable and this did last for a good few weeks to be honest. More recently though I don't feel as comfortable on the topper and this is probably because I have got used to it and need something a bit thicker if you will. This is not to say that the topper isn't comfortable because it is and it is certainly much better than what my mattress is alone but I do feel like if it was a bit thicker I would feel like I was better supported in bed in all honesty. Whilst I would recommend this product I have to say that if I were to have my choices all over again I would probably opt for the 5cm thickness which can be bought from amazon for £107.00 as I suspect that may be a bit more supportive. Currently with this one whilst I can still feel the memory foam I can also feel the mattress underneath which isn't brilliant and really does need to be replaced at some point. I know that when I do get a new bed though I will opt for a memory foam mattress and I will still pop this topper on there for a little extra support. Thank you for reading my review!
