Advantages: Amazingly comfortable, great value, easy to fit to mattress.
Disadvantages: Reflects and stores the heat, does smell funny for the first few days.
On a trip to Australia last year my husband and I had spent a night in a pretty swanky hotel where all the beds had memory foam mattresses. Both of us were blown away by the feel of it and I determined to try and get one for us (at a reasonable cost!) when we got home.
Not long afterwards a Groupon deal came up where you could get any size for £69. As at that time the recommended retail price for a standard double was around £140 this was a great bargain and I ordered one straight away.
When it came I was amazed it fitted in what seemed quite a small box, I quickly realised that it arrives VERY tightly rolled and secured and that you will NEVER be able to get it back to this size/shape once you release it! Mine also came with a bonus protector valance which fits over the foam sheet and holds it to the top of your mattress.
I actually found that because of the oddly dense texture of the memory foam it actually tends to cling to the mattress fabric wherever it sits and there is little need for the cover - but I use it anyway to ensure no marks or stains affect the foam.
This mattress topper is approximately 3 inches thick and whilst this will not give the same feeling as an entire mattress made of memory foam, the difference you will feel going from a standard mattress to this is impressive. I still (some 8 months on) find it makes a massive difference to the comfort of our bed and I miss it whenever we sleep in a normal bed elsewhere. The support and the feeling of comfort and cosiness are very enjoyable, for the first few weeks I found it astoundingly difficult to get out of bed at all in a morning!
People do say that memory foam smells funny and certainly in the first week or so I could smell the weird, synthetic, plastic like aroma which had been very distinct when it came out of the original packaging. Needless to say that within a few weeks this had dissipated entirely and I did not find it so much of a bother that it would put me off using it or buying memory foam again.
My only slight gripe - and it is something I am only really noticing for the first time in the last month or so - is that in warmer weather it does tend to store and reflect the heat so it is trickier to get cool. This does not bother me too much but if you are someone who runs at a hot temperature or finds this a problem at night then it might be worth considering.
All in all I would definitely recommend this if you do not want the expense of a full memory foam mattress, to me it really makes a world of difference and it is well worth the money. Annoyingly, although when I bought it £69 was a bargain I see you can now pick this up for around the £50 mark as standard, probably because there are more around to choose from. Silent Night are an established brand and I believe that this is a quality product so if you are shopping around for one do look out for this make.
I promise you - once you have tried one of these toppers you will never go back to a normal mattress again!
Summary: Fabulous product which you will wonder why you never bought it earlier!
