“ Brand: Silentnight / Product Type: Single Mattress „
Personally, although I know they are probably very good for my back and posture etc etc, I am just not keen on very firm mattresses. I need a bed that I can snuggle down into of an evening, not one that is like laying on a plank of wood. So when I was looking for a new mattress I very much liked the idea of the ones which have a quilted / padded top, as I liked the idea of sort of having a duvet on top of my mattress!
I am fortunate enough to have a friend who works for the Silentnight company and therefore I did not have to pay full price for this as they were able to get me a family & friends discount. However, I still paid £250 for a king size one of these, so expect to pay in excess of that if you are buying directly from Silentnight or from a shop.
I bought the mattress at the same time as a bed frame and this mattress, on the underside, has grips which stop it from sliding about on the wooden bed frame. As it was a Silentnight frame that I also bought it worked well with it, as the slats on the bed frame also have these little grips. I don't know if this feature would work quite as well on another brand of bed frame, but it certainly couldn't do any harm!
I have absolutely loved this mattress, it is so very comfy without being too soft that it sage right in and eventually gives you a bad back! The quilted top definitely helps the feeling of comfort. It is supportive enough whilst still making me feel snug! The quilted top also helps you to stay nice and warm in bed - I guess for those of you who are naturally quite warm or who don't like being too warm in bed then this may not be ideal, especially in the summer, but for me as someone who is always cold and often needs the aid of an electric blanket and a hot water bottlke in the winter it is lovely!
One criticisn I do have of the 'gripped' underside of this mattress is that it means that you cannot turn your mattress as much as you would be able to do with other ones. I am aware that to keep a mattress in good order you should turn it every so often, to ensure an even distribution of wear / weight, however wioth this mattress you can only turn it one of two ways, you cannot flip it over and therefore have it four different ways. I hope that makes sense?! This has meant that it has now started to show signs of wear and indentation on one side of the mattress and that I really can't do much about it, so I suppose this will mean that it will have a shorter 'life expectancy' than some.
All in all however I have been very pleased with it, it has been perfect for my needs and (even ignoring the slight discount) it was not extortionately expensive. The grips have their pros and cons as does the quilted top but so long as you bear this in mind before purchase you can figure out if this is the perfect mattress for you too!
