I found this topper for a bargain price of £39.99 from amazon with free post and packaging, and the product came within 3 days, as it was stated on the website. I bought this product due to terrible back and was worried that it was due to my mattress. FIRST IMPRESSIONS *************** It came in a box about two foot high and two foot wide and inside it was sealed in a plastic bag. When I pulled it out it was very creased and looked thinner than expected though after 'airing' it, it increased to full size and was full. The first thing that hit me after opening the box was the SMELL - it was a very clinical hospital smell and lingered for a few weeks even after airing. ON THE BED ********* Let me say, firstly it has improved my backache no end and I do not regret purchasing it at all. HOWEVER the fit on the bed was not perfect, though the bed is double and the topper claimed to be also it wasn't, it over hangs the edges and is about an inch shorter than it should be. Also every morning when I wake up the sheet over the topper and mattress is off at least one corner so it means re making the bed, though this is a small price to may for my better posture and less painful days. AIRING ****** Inevitable with a topper, though it is impractical to 'air the item for at least 46 hours' in an outdoor or open space without ruining it. Luckily I have a conservatory that allows for this, but not everyone does and it doesn't specify this when purchasing. Also it left a funny smell in the conservatory for a week or so after it had been removed UPKEEP ****** You cannot wash the topper so you MUST ensure you keep in covered with a sheet at all times. The topper does have a few rips in it, not sure how or why these have come about.
Last year our mattress was really on its last legs but at the time we just couldn't afford to buy a new, quality mattress so we took the advice of my mother in law and purchased the Silent Night Memory Foam Topper to try and get a few comfortable nights' sleep until we could afford a new mattress. The usual retail price for one of these toppers is between £60 and £70 but we were lucky enough to find one all by itself with a torn box in Tesco and discovered it was reduced to £25 which was an absolute bargain and we were really pleased. We were going to go for the Silent Night one anyway as I have always felt their bed items are the best on the market so to find it at such a good price was really pleasing. It came in a blue box with the Silent Night logo on the front and a lttle picture of the topper. The topper was rolled up inside the box so when it came to getting it home, it was simply a case of unrolling it and putting it on top of the mattress. I really thought we had an answer to our problems as a topper is supposed to lay on top of your mattress and give you an extra layer of softness and protection from any lumps, bumps or spirngs coming through your mattress. However, much disappointment and annoyance came from this topper I am afraid. Firstly, once laid out on the bed, we found that it was a little bit thinner than expected. Out came my husband's tape measure and we found it was only 2.5cm. Not alot really but we were hopeful that this wouldn't mean anything and we would still manage to get a good night's sleep. We have fitted sheets on out bed so obviously the fitted sheet needed to go over the top of the topper but no matter how much we tugged and pulled, our double sheet just would not hold over the top of the topper. It just kept flicking back off. And even when we eventually got it to hold, it made the corners roll up so we could not use a fitted sheet with it and had to use a flat sheet. When we were using it, we found that the topper went very flat and just didn't seem to give us that added layer of comfort the box boasted of. In fact, althought it was a little bit of an improvement on laying on the mattress, it wasn't that much different. The topper also made both me and my husband feel hot. It didn't seem to allow the heat of our bodies to flow through it. Instead it seemed to trap the heat and thenradiate it back into us. We purchased this when we had really hot weather last summer so this made us very uncomfortable and irritable. In fact it just made us keep waking up each night. Even with the duvet covers kicked off of us it was just like sleeping on top of a radiator. The other thing we found with this topper was that it did not stay in place very well. If you moved around at night, the topper would shift with you. At one point, my husband wasn't even on the topper as it had moved so much! I would have been so disappointed with this had we paid the full price for it. It didn't do the job it was supposed to and it caused more annoyance than comfort. It definately did not give us a Silent Night! I would avoid this at all costs.
Before my husband and I invested in a new mattress we decided to try and get a bit more life out of our old one by using a memory foam mattress topper. The idea behind it is that you only ever feel the benefit of 2.5cm of topper so they should provide the same benefits at a greatly decreased cost. We bought the Silentnight Memory Foam Mattress Topper at the bargain price of £39.99 for a double. We bought it in a sale at a local ex catalogue closing down sale, usually the RRP for a double topper is closer to £70. It came boxed with the silentnight logo, and all you do is unravel it (and let it settle), and then place your fitted or flat sheet over the top. It is initially fairly comfortable and it did a good job of covering the uncomfortable springs in our mattress and evening off the dip we had on one side caused by the imbalance in weight between me and hubby (not that we're obese or anything - but he is about two stones heavier than me and it caused the mattress to sag slightly). My problems are with actual use of the mattress. One thing is that it adds just enough 'bulk' to the mattress so that my fitted sheets dont curl under the underside of my mattress meaning the bedding ends up springing back over the bed, really annoying. But the worst thing by far is that the topper rolls along the mattress when you roll over or move meaning that one side can have an overhang and the other side has a step! Uncomfortable, and dangerous, if you try to roll to part of the bed that doesn't actually have mattress under it! We attempted to use safety pins to attach it at all corners but it just bent them and came loose anyway, and after a few months we got so totally fed up of the topper we ended up buying a mattress (a silentnight, we weren't put off the brand!) that has a sprung base and a built in memory foam upper. Much better, much more comfortable, and no niggles. Overall I can't really recommend this memory foam topper, it was a bit of a nightmare for us, certainly more hassle than it was worth, and we were glad to throw it away. When it comes down to it, if you need a new mattress, buy the best one you can afford without bothering to waste a potential £70 on this memory foam creeper!!
~Silentnight Mattress Topper~ ********************** When looking for ways to improve the feel of one of the guest beds the choice seemed either to buy a completely new mattress or opt for a mattress topper. After having weighed up the positives and negatives of both options the cheapest and easiest of all available options seemed to be buying a reasonably priced mattress topper. The one I ended up buying was a Silentnight Memory Foam Topper which seemed well priced in comparison with other similar products I saw when sourcing the right product. As someone who has bought items from the Silentnight range before and found most of them to be of a good quality, I felt this was a trusted brand that I ought to be able to rely on. My new mattress topper came well packed in a sizable cardboard box that was a little bulky. The design on the box showed this to be an 'Impress' mattress topper which I hoped would impress me once it was in situ and in use. I liked the idea of this product as it is meant to add a much needed extra layer of softness to harder mattresses which should mean you get a better sleep on them. In reality I found that whilst this was far better than laying on a firm feeling mattress without a topper, once the topper was in place, it was not really any better than it was with a duvet covering the mattress which was then tucked into a fitted sheet. I found the mattress topper to be of a good size that fitted well, with it covering all of the top of the mattress area. The depth of the mattress topper was not as full and luxurious as I hoped it might be, as it was no more than 2.5cms thick at the very most. I felt this gave the topper a skimpy feel as it was quite thin and seemed to flatten out very easily once in use, even though the material used to make up the topper does appear quite dense on first inspection. The so called heat sensitive memory foam that was used to make up the topper really could have been just a little deeper in my opinion, which would have had a much more dramatic comfort giving effect. Another aspect of the product that I felt was slightly unsatisfactory was the way that the topper did seem to get very warm after laying on it for any length of time. When I placed an extra duvet under the fitted sheet prior to buying the mattress topper this didn't seem to retain quite so much heat making it much cooler. Guests commented on how very warm the topper seemed which didn't make for a very good nights sleep. The non allergenic, fully washable cover that came with the topper seemed to be of a fair quality, with it appearing quite sufficient for the job of protecting the mattress topper once in use, although I don't think it was anything special in terms of appearance. ~Price and rating~ ************** The cost of these mattress toppers begins at £40 for a single and can go as high as £70 for the larger sized toppers, which I feel is a reasonable price for a basic style product such as this one. If you are looking for a deeper more luxurious mattress topper this one won't really be suitable in my opinion as it is too slim to give a true luxury feel. The issue with heat retention is something to consider when thinking about buying one of these in my opinion, as this can disrupt sleep - had I been aware of this factor I may have decided against making a purchase. Overall I feel this isn't the best product of this type you can buy which is why I am giving this mattress topper a 3 star product rating.
