Fisco Py3014 Pacer Tufcote Tape
I have used a lot of long tapes when I am out on archaeological sites, both good and bad ones ! There is nothing worse than a crap tape which is worn and unreadable with tattered ends. Our company have a couple of the Fisco Pacer tapes that I have tried and found them to be good quality and reliable.
Fisco is a leading measuring tape manufacturer that has been trading since 1939 in their factory in Essex. The company's focus is to product high quality and precision measuring tools for professionals. It is the UK's leading measuring tape producer.
Py3014 Turcote Tape
The tape measure is basically built around the 30 m length tape. This is about 1 cm wide tape that is coiled into a large and neat loop. The coil is very tightly wound and compact to keep it in place when both in use and stored. Around the tape is the plastic frame, that is a cross shape which keeps the coiled tape in place. In the centre of the cross is where the end of the tape is attached inside.
The tape is unwound and wound up using the handle that is attached to the inside end of the tape. This is a thin, solid plastic flat handle that folds out from the tape with a yellow grip on the end. The handle is not only there to wind in the tape, which is a very smooth and easy movement, it also stops the tape from unwinding more. If you fold the handle back flat, the handle and yellow grip locks against a corner of the cross frame design, meaning it cannot be unwound further unless you fold the handle back over, releasing the tape.
The top of the cross deign has a spade like handle, that is very strong and has a good grip for you to keep hold of the tape measure when using it. On the opposite side of the cross is a spike so that you can stand or stick the tape in the ground or secure it when you're using the opposite end.
The tape weighs approximately 900 g and is light and easy enough to carry around for day to day jobs. The Turcote Tape is designed to be a heavy duty long tape measure and you can feel that it is a well-made and durable product, which is exactly what you look for when working on building sites and in the outdoors - it is going to get a bit of a battering. The tape itself is a very good quality nylon coated steel tape that is both flexible and strong. The zero of the tape has a metal loop that you can clip onto things when you're extending it. The tape has easy to read metric markings on with with cm, m and feet.
The tape is an open case design, which basically means that you can see the entire tape coil. This is a very clever design as it means that you can see any snags, damage or twists in the tape, which can be very annoying and difficult to sort out in covered long tapes. It also means that you can clean the tape frequently and will minimal effort as the whole item can be submerged in water and cleaned or hosed down.
Price and Availability
Fisco Pacer Tapes are widely available both online and in tool stores, my review is of the 30 m version, you can also get this in a 50 m and 100 m lengths. Prices start from around £40 for the 30 metre tape, which may seem pricey for a long measuring tape, but it is designed to last and does so. I have used cheaper models that don't last 5 minutes; it is definitely worth the extra pennies in the long run!
