Danapak Thick Cut Smoked Bacon
by Chippytarka
In this household we all love bacon. Such a simple meat product but somehow it brings alot of satisfaction. Normally eaten at breakfast time, but to be honest could eat anytime of the day!
I bought this particular packet of bacon by Danepak, smoked thick cut variety in Tescos as it was half price. At a cost of £1.50 for 8 ... rashers, I thoughtit was reasonable, and I also bought a packet of the non smoked variety as well.
Packaging
In what you would expect. Its in a black plastic try type container with a clear thin plastic cover on the top, with a picture of roasted tomatoes on the front, Danepak logo directly underneath, how many rashers ( 8 ) are included and the thickness of cut ( thick ).
Ingredients
Pork 87%, water, salt, preservatives.
Not going to go into how to cook it, but will explain what I thought of the product itself.
So what did I think?
Firstly, when I sae the phrase ' thick cut ' I expected something to be alittle more dense than what I am used to. I didnt feel it was very thick, maybe just a touch than normal back bacon, but not enough to give it this label. So that did disappoint me some what. But the overall look of it raw seemed fine:decent sizes, more bacon than fat ( as you would expect from back bacon cut ) and just the right level of pinkyness.
I fry my bacon on a non stick electric frying pan,so no need for oil. The bacon itself held its shape well and shrank alittle but not much. You would expect some due to the fact it contains water. The bacon itself didnt take long to cook and once cooked looked delicious.
You do get that the smoky element in the taste but its not overwhelming.Just provides an added depth to the flavour. The bacon itself wasnt chewy and easy to eat and the bacon slightly crispy ( as I like it ). With it being smoked it is alittle more salty than the normal variety but thats not a bad thing.Very yummy if I say so myelf.
Would I buy again?Yes I would, but probably if it was half price again. 8 rashers for £3.00 isnt something I would pay but half price, why not? Only disappointing thing was I expected the rashers to be alittle more thicker, but that doesnt take away the taste.
Now Im off to finish my breakfast..... Read the complete review |

Birds Eye Crispy Chicken Dippers
by CosmicLove
~ Why I Bought Them ~
I picked a few boxes of these up when they were on offer in Tesco. It is always handy to have something quick and easy in the freezer for days when I can't really be bothered to cook a proper meal and these seemed ideal.
~ Price ~
I bought these when they were on offer at a pound per ... box. The retail price for a box of 15 of the dippers is £1.69 which is still quite cheap in my opinion. You can also get them in a big bag which has 42 dippers in it and this costs around £4.50.
~ Packaging ~
The chicken dippers come loose inside a cardboard box. The box has all of the info you need on it such as the ingredients and the product name and there's also a photograph of the dippers so you are able to see what they look like. The box is not too bulky and it doesn't take up very much space in my freezer.
~ My Opinion ~
I am trying to get healthier so it is not often that I buy food like this, however when I saw that the dippers were on offer I decided to buy a few boxes to stick in the freezer for lazy days, or when I fancied a bit of a treat. The chicken dippers are extremely quick and easy to cook and all of the cooking info is on the back.
My oven is quite fierce and it only took around 10 minutes before they were cooked thoroughly. I did find it a little hard to tell if they were cooked properly though as the colour of the batter did not change at all, it didn't get darker or golden like I expected but I just cut into one of the dippers to see if it was cooked and it was clear that it was. The batter on the chicken dippers is not too heavy and stodgy but it is not too light either. The thickness of the batter is just right in my opinion.
The batter does feel a little bit greasy and it left the baking tray with a bit of a greasy layer on it, but it wasn't so greasy that it was disgusting. The chicken was a little bland in taste but had a nice texture, but I didn't think that it tasted particularly nice and I had to dip it in lots of tomato sauce to enjoy the taste. The batter didn't really taste that nice either as it was a little salty. After eating about eight of the dippers I felt quite full but not like my hunger was satisfied and it didn't feel like an enjoyable meal.
Due to this I will just be eating a few now and again when I want a warm snack and I won't be buying anymore when I have used the boxes of them up that I already have. As for the nutrition aspect, these chicken dippers are battered so it goes without saying that they are definitely not the healthiest option but they're not too high in calories either.
100 grams (around 4 dippers) contains around 250 calories and over 13 grams of fat. Though this isn't a huge amount of calories or fat, I find that I need to eat at least 8 of the dippers to feel 'satisfied', which equates to about 500+ calories, so I always make sure I eat them with salad so that I don't feel too guilty afterwards!
~ All in All ~
They're nice enough but they're not very tasty or filling and I won't be buying them again. Read the complete review |

Tesco Value Tuna Chunks In Brine
by xxfoxyredxx
I'm not very much of a fish lover, I have to be in the mood to eat it really however I do buy a can of tuna occasionally so I can have a tuna and salad cream sandwich and the likes and share some of the tuna with my lovely Myrtle (cat!).
When I was recently in my local Tesco store I bought us a can of this and it cost me 82p ... for a 185g can of the stuff which I thought was very good value for money compared to branded ones that Tesco stocked....I didn't want to have to take a mortgage on just a can of tuna after-all!
The Packaging:
The can has a light cream coloured label on it and on the front of it we are clearly told what it is and who it is by, that it is dolphin friendly and then on the back of the can ingredients and nutritional advice is given and contact details for Tesco are given. Nice enough can this one and its informative enough too.
The Fish:
The fish is a pinkish colour, smells fishy and the fish is mixed with brine and salt. I drain mine off in sieve and then because it isn't overly seasoned I add my own pinch of salt to it and a bit of cracked black pepper.
There are no bones in this, no bits of skin and it really is just fish and I really like this. The fish isn't dry unless you bash too much of the brine out of it which is what I did with my first can, so now I'm more careful with it and leave a little brine within it.
This is great mixed with sweetcorn and popped on a spud or in a sandwich and me cat loves it as much as I do and it only has 65 calories within half the can of it as well and there's only 0.1g of saturated fat so my hips don't mind it either so thumbs up for this one Tesco!
