Ross Fish Cakes
by Tingram2012 I like to have a variety of different foods in my freezer that can be thrown together with something else and cooked really quickly. Recently I was in Morrisons looking for something to fill this role and I came across Ross Fish Cakes. No I have had these before but for some reason i'm usually drawn towards fishfingers instead. So I ... thought it would make a nice change. That night I was planning to go out and didnt have alot of time so I decided to have fishcakes, chips and mushy peas. What I like about this meal is it can all be put in the oven and left to cook without having to be checked on every two minutes. Cooking instructions: Cook from frozen ensuring that fishcakes are piping hot. *Ovenbake* Preheat oven to 230c.450f/Gas Mark 8. Remove all packaging and place fishcakes on a baking tray. Cook for 12 minutes. For Fan Assisted Ovens reduce temperature by 30% and reduce time by 2 minutes. *Deep Fry* Preheat oil to 180c. Gently lower fishcakes into hot oil and fry for 4 minutes. *Pan Fry* Preheat 1 tablespoon of oil in frying pan over medium heat. Place fish cakes in pan and cook for 6 minutes turning occasionally. *Grill* Preheat base of grill pan under a medium heat. Place fish cake on hot grill pan and return pan, close to heat and cook for 8 minutes turning occasionally. I can only comment on the ovenbake technique as this is the way I alsways cook them. That way they dont need my undivided attention. I have a fan assisted oven and they are always cooked thoroughly within 10 minutes. The breadcrumb coating has a nice crispy texture and the inside is nice and soft but not soft enough that it goes mushy. There is also a bit of a kick to the flavour which I think has something to do with the pepper in them and some of the other herbs. I really like these fishcakes and at 99p for 4 they're a bargain. It think it would be better though if they were a little bit bigger, it doesnt take long before all four are gone, They taste great with chips or in between 2 slices of bread and i'm sure theres plenty of other ways to eat them. Ingredients: Minced Whitefish (33%), Partially Reconstituted Dry Potato, Coating (Wheat, Flour, Yeast, Salt, Turmeric), Colours (Paprika Extracts, Curcumin), Vegetable Oil, Salt, Parsley, Pepper Extracts, Parsley Extracts. Allergy Advice: contains fish, gluten, wheat and yeast. Also there may be bones. In each fishcake there are 76 kcals, 0.4g of sugar, 2.9g of fat, 1.1g of saturates and 0.5g Salt. There are also no artificial colours and each pack contains 336 grams. I would recommended these to anyone after a quick meal who is not to fussed about them tasting wonderful. They are quite nice, they fill a hole and they're are inexpensive. Plus i'm pretty sure kids will love them. Read the complete review |

Ross Fish Cakes
by keeperofthematri I wanted a quick uncomplicated tea last night so I put 4 of these in the oven, along with a couple of potato waffles. I also cooked some beans on the hob. Packaging. The fishcakes come in a box with a picture of some fishcakes, chips, peas & tomato sauce on the front. The familar Ross logo appears on ... the back & front as well as on one side. One side contains the nutritional information & ingredients, another the quality guarantee and Ross Careline details & a third side contains cooking guidelines. The box contains 8 fish cakes Nutritional Information: per fish cake, oven baked {per 100g as sold in brackets}: Kj: 318 {741kJ} Calories: 76 kcal {177 kcal} Protein: 3.4g {8.1g} Carbohydrate: 8.9g {19.8g} of which sugars: 0.4g {0.5g} Fat: 2.9g {7.2g} of which saturates: 1.1g {2.7g} of which trans: nil {nil} Fibre: 0.6g {1.5g} Sodium: 0.20g {0.46g} salt equivalent: 0.5g {1.2g} Ingedients: Minced fish (33%), partially reconstituted dried potato, coating (wheat flour, yeast, salt, turmeric, paprika extract, curcumin), vegetable oil, parsley, salt, parsley, pepper extract, parsley extract Allery advice: Contains fish, gluten, wheat and yeast Cooking Guidelines: Grill: Pre-heat the grill. Cook for 8 minutes in total, turning occasionally Oven: Pre-heat the oven to 230C/450F/Gas Mark 8 and bake for 12 minutes on the top shelf. Reduce the temperature by 30C & cooking time by 2 minutes for fan ovens. Shallow fry: Heat 1 tablespoon of oil, and fry on a medium heat for 6 minutes, turning frequently Deep fry: Pre-heat a pan 1/3rd full of oil to 180C/350F and fry for about 4 minutes Price: At the time of writing I paid £1.25 for the box of 8 fishcakes from my local corner shop. Taste: The fishcakes are under an inch in thickness & about 2 - 3 inches across. After cooking, the coating is fairly crisp, although it can get slightly hard if you cook the fishcakes for too long. The filling is a sort of grey-white colour & you can't really see where the fish ends & the potato begins. The fish doesn't really have that much of a flavour. You can more easily taste the potato, parsley & pepper, although none of these is particularly overpowering either. I added some vinegar to the fishcakes to see whether that might bring out a little of the fish flavour but it had no effect. Still, the fishcakes are fairly pleasant in a blandsort of way rather than being something strongly flavoured. Opinion: The fishcakes are not that large so even having four of them, along with a couple of waffles & beans wouldn't constitute a large meal for those of you with a healthy appetite. As I said, they're pleasant enough & I should think the fact that they're not strongly flavoured would mean that most kids will eat them without a murmur. The fishcakes contain almost 3g of fat if oven baked so I'd recommend that's how you should cook them given that the adult Recomended Daily Amount for fat is 70g. Shallow or deep frying will obviously add to your fat intake so if, for example, you're cooking 4 fishcakes you've already got almost 12g of fat before you even add in the fat from the frying pan or deep fat fryer & whatever potato product you're having with your meal. As fishcakes go, these are decent enough, but if you're looking for something with a bit more taste then you maybe need to go for a better line of fish fingers. Read the complete review |

Ross Fish Steaks In Butter Sauce
by xjemloux I have said in other food reviews of mine I'm not particularly fussy what I eat I'm easily pleased and enjoy large portions. Whilst shopping in Iceland I fancied something different to what I usually eat which tends to be chicken in some shape or form so I went to the fish freezers. It was here I came across Ross Fish Steaks ... In Butter Sauce. There were a few boxes of Ross fish products in various sauces, shapes and sizes but these caught my eye as the box was bright yellow therefore very eyecatching. I decided to give them a try seeing as they were only £2 for a box of 4 and the picture of them on the box looked pretty scrummy. Each fish steak came packed in it's own clear packaging so you could see the yellow sauce inside and a hint of white and grey fish. Each packet was a bit smaller than expected just fitting inside the palm of my hand but I didn't pay much so wasn't complaining. They can either be boiled whilst in their bags or microwaved after the bags have been pierced several times. I tend to microwave mine just due to laziness and can't comment on what they taste like when they have been boiled. To make a whole meal I cooked two of the fish packets, boiled potatoes and broccoli. Altogether it tasted quite nice, the butter sauce was the main flavour though as to be honest the fish had no flavour. I finished off the plate, but afterwards when thinking about it indivudually I was a bit disapointed. If I had high expectations the fish really was a let down. It was thin, grey in areas, well I suppose what I'm trying to say is it didn't look so healthy. The fish steaks themselves, well I wouldn't call them 'steaks' were flavourless, watery and seemed rubbery and chewy whilst eating them. The sauce however did provide a slight taste, it was buttery which is what I expected from a butter sauce. It was a bright yellow when frozen with specks of green in it which I'm assuming is some sort of flavouring for it but once cooked the yellow grew pale, extremely thin with the odd thick lump here and there. The look of the sauce was actually the most disapointing thing though as the taste was quite pleasant and if it wasn't for this sauce the fish erm squares would be boring, bland and probably not edible. I have bought them since but only because I have been impressed with the sauce itself and the sauce really does offer all the flavour and excitement about them. Overall and altogether they can make a half decent tasty meal. But when really sitting down to think about what I am eating they are a bit of a disapointment. If I wasn't so lazy I would learn to make fish with butter sauce myself. In case you are wondering these fish steaks are Alaskan Pollock .. well this is what it says on the ingredients list on the back of the box. You can also buy these fish steaks in a Parsley sauce which I havn't tried and don't intend to either Read the complete review |
