Asda Battered Haddock Fillets
Advantages: Tasty and reasonably priced fish
Disadvantages: None at all
I love battered fish and I particularly like Haddock so when I spotted this offering in Asda costing £2.00 for 4 haddock battered fillets I decided to get them for tea for me and my friend! I hadn't had anything like this in ages and tend to only have battered fish of any kind when I'm out and feeling naughty cos in my mind batter simply isn't healthy....although I love it of course lol.
Red and white box and all over it there are photographs of the fish on there and the front and the back of the box are exactly the same in appearance. I am told that it is Asda '4' Battered 100% Haddock Fillets 'Shaped from pieces of fillet in golden batter' and that all the freshness is frozen in and that it contains no artificial colours, flavours or hydrogenated fat, there is an at a glance nutritional chart on there and the best before date is clearly stated. Other information stated on the box includes ingredients and allergy advice, a full nutritional chart is shown as are cooking instructions given, the weight of the fish is also stated which in this case is 500g (for a 4 portion box and the only size I have seen) and contact details for Asda are clearly given. Nice enough box, informative enough and easy to open etc.
Inside the box and in a clear plastic bag that is easy to tear open you get 4 similar and rather large portions of battered fish. Best cooked from frozen these are advised to be cooked in the oven for 20-25 minutes and that is how I cook them and simple it is!
When cooked the batter goes golden and slightly puffy and basically they look very nice and I like the way they are not all exactly the same shape and size making them not feel so shop bought type of thing.
Taste wise these are terrific in my opinion for shop bought, battered fish. Sure they are never going to be as good as fresh and bought from a chippy but these really do taste great. Easy to cook and looking nice as I have just stated the batter on this is thick enough without being too hard. It is nicely seasoned and contains a little grease although they are not too greasy at all.
The fish inside is of course haddock and if your familiar with the taste of haddock it tastes like that! Pure white with no skin or bones in it, it is moist and strong in flavour which goes well with the batter! Nicely seasoned and not containing loads of grease this is a very tasty and substantial bit of fish and in our opinion worth the money.
Nutritional Information Per Oven-Baked Fillet:
Saturated Fat: 1.3g
Only available in Asda priced at £2.00 a box and other varieties of fish are available to purchase for the same price from within this range.
Summary: Nice bit of fish from Asda!
