Advantages: Really nice,easy to cook

Disadvantages: Skin can sometimes be a bit tough

I love sausage and mash, but always used to worry about cheap quality meat low pork content being used to make them.

Asda's extra special sausages were the end of my worries, the ones I will write about are the pork and apple. These are made with 80% pork, this is very high for a sausage and probably not much lower than that of a butchers. They cost £2.28 for six good sized sausages, weighing in at 400g. They are £1.28 per pack, but Asda often have an offer on, three packs for £3.

When you open the packet you have to cut the sausages apart, this reminds me of a Butchers sausage. They are nice and thick and even when raw are noticeably better quality than brands like Walls or Richmond, these aren't a horrible bright pink colour. To cook these, Asda recommends you either grill them for 15minutes or shallow fry for around 12-15mins. As these sausages are very thick, every time we have grilled or fried them they seem to be overdone on the outside and not done enough inside, so we just put them in an oven roasting tray and cook for 30-40minutes. Hardly any fat comes out of the sausages into the roasting tray which is always a good sign. We never cook them in oil or anything, I just throw them in as they are.

I think these taste delicious, you can instantly tell it is good meat, where as others you can buy just seem to mush up in your mouth. With these you have to give them a good chewing. You can clearly see and taste the pieces of apple which is a very nice addition. They are very well seasoned and are full of flavour. I do find the skins can sometimes be a bit chewy which is a little annoying, but most of the time they are fine.

These sausages are excellent served with mash and gravy. They're not really the type you would eat with an English breakfast, for this i would recommend the Premium pork variety, they are the same price and also come in a pack of six. The pork and leek ones are very nice too. I always save one to eat cold on a sandwich and they taste brilliant when cold.

These sausages can be frozen on day of purchase, but must be thoroughly defrosted before cooking; we usually take them out the freezer and leave in the fridge for 24hours. Once the pack is opened they should be eaten within one day.

Overall I think Asda have made a great product with these sausages. 5/5

Summary: Well worth a try
