      Yuck

I always look in the markdowns cabinet at Asda, and recently when I was looking for bargains I saw this pack of Southern Fried Chicken reduced to £1.19. Normally it costs £2.97, or can be bought on offer for 2 for £5, which also includes other items in the Fresh Tastes range. I thought that it was a bargain at its reduced price and took it home to pop in the freezer. The chicken comes in a metal tray with a cellophane layer over the top, and a cardboard slip around it which gives the nutritional details. The slip describes the product as '2 chicken breasts in a spicy southern style crumb with bourbon barbecue sauce'. Inside the tray you find the two chicken breasts and a separate packet of barbecue sauce. This is useful as it means that if you don't want much or any sauce then you don't have to use it. The chicken needs to be defrosted before use if you have frozen it like me. You then put the chicken in the oven for 25-30 minutes, and just before it's ready, you put the sauce in a bowl and put it in the microwave for 1 minute 30 seconds. I found that this was not a good time for the sauce as it seemed to burn a bit and also splattered all over the microwave, so I would recommend putting it on for less. I also found the chicken needed much longer in the oven and even after 40 minutes it wasn't quite done. Once the chicken was out of the oven it looked alright but quite small considering the price it usually goes for. I put it out with some chips and beans and it just about filled the plate then. I thought the taste was a bit bland and certainly nothing like the tastier southern fried chicken you get at KFC. It was a bit dry too. The sauce was unpleasant and didn't taste like either bourbon or bbq sauce, it just tasted very tomatoey. Half a pack of chicken and sauce contains 283 calories, 7.9 grams of sugar, 7.7 grams of fat, 1.1 grams of saturates and 1.1 grams of fat so at least it is not too bad for you. I wasn't impressed with this product and can't believe that anyone pays full price for it. I wouldn't buy it again even if it was reduced.
