Asda Sausage Rolls
Advantages: NONE FOR ME
Disadvantages: SEE REVIEW
Whilst in my local Asda supermarket the other day, I picked up a double pack of their own brand sausage rolls to give them a try. The packaging is different to the picture shown on Dooyoo, as the ones I opted to buy are in a little plastic packet containing two individual sausage rolls, costing somewhere around the 50 pence mark or thereabouts.
After returning home and putting all the shopping away, I opted to try out one of the sausage rolls - Lol what can I say?... Food shopping always makes me hungry! :-o
Tearing open the clear packet and removing one sausage roll, I was aware straight away that they did not look to be all that appetising. If I had paid more attention whilst I was in the supermarket, I would probably have noticed this, as the packaging is see-through - d'oh!
They are quite flat and rectangular in shape, and the sausage meat filling is certainly evident from looking at them. The pastry though, was not at all golden brown-looking, and is rather dull in colour, which I found to be a bit disappointing.
Anyway, due to the immense hunger pangs I was suffering, I took a large bite of the somewhat grey-looking sausage roll.
The first thing that hit me was the texture of the pastry - it appeared to be far too thick, and was therefore rather stodgy. It was not at all crumbly or flaky, which is what I personally think the pastry on a sausage roll SHOULD be like. I also thought that the taste of the pastry was a bit bland, and that it tasted faintly of cardboard!
The sausage meat within the pastry was, in a word - foul. The ratio of sausage to pastry was not on the mark at all, and the pastry was so thick that the small portion of sausage within was engulfed somewhat. As it turned out though, this was a bit of a blessing for me, as the taste of the sausage was so off-putting.
I was aware whilst I was chewing it that the meat did not taste much of anything at all - and there was definitely not enough seasoning. The worst thing about it for me though, was that I came across a little bit of gristly meat on TWO separate occasions whilst eating the sausage roll. Given the rather small size of it, I felt that this was a bit on the ridiculous side, and opted to throw the remainder of it straight into the bin.
I was then left with a rather greasy feeling in my mouth and a rather salty aftertaste, which remained even after two glasses of fruit juice. In the end I brushed my teeth thoroughly, just to get rid of the feeling of grease, and found the whole experience rather unpleasant.
There is cooking guidelines on the packaging, should you wish to eat these sausage rolls warm, and the packaging also states that these are suitable for home freezing. There is also some allergy advice on there so that you can make an informed choice about buying these if you suffer from any food allergies. The nutritional information on the packaging informs me that each sausage roll will provide 231 calories, and 15.8g of fat! Hmm... enough said methinks!
I would not buy these again, ever. Nor would I recommend them. I found them to be a complete and utter waste of money as the remaining sausage roll in the packet had to be thrown out, given that I would not have touched it with a barge pole, and my partner does not like them.
I was actually considering buying a larger pack of these when I spotted them in Asda, as I saw straight away that they could be frozen for convenience, and thought that they would be handy to keep in my freezer until they were needed. - Needless to say, dear dooyooers that I am VERY glad that I decided against it and bought the small package of two sausage rolls instead of a larger sized pack... what a disaster that would have been!
Because I cannot award these with minus stars, which is what I think they deserve, they get only one star from me - although this feels like it is a bit over-generous! Yuck!
Summary: ONLY ONE STAR - AVOID THESE!!
