“ Brand: Asda / Type: Fish „
When it comes to sea-food it's something I really love and living on the beach now I can watch the fish come in and nip out and buy it straight off the boats and so it's almost wriggling still! I adore prawns but often I'm low on money and have to cut corners so the other day whilst in Asda I spotted these and decided as they were so cheap to try them out!
White and dark green bag with a photograph of a bowl of prawns on the front of it and I am told that they are Asda Smart Price Prawns 'Cooked and peeled cold water prawns' and to keep them frozen and the best before date is clearly stamped on there. On the back of the bag other information listed includes ingredients (All these contain is prawns, water and salt), allergy advice is given (Contains: Shellfish lol), a full nutritional chart is given, warnings and storage advice is listed, the weight is stated which in this case is 220g (the drained weight is 200g) and contact details for Asda are given. Cheap looking packaging this is but it is as informative as it needs to be and easy enough to open though not easy to reseal!
Well the prawns in appearance when you open the bag are tiny, light pink and of course frozen in ice and in a large congealed cluster. You need to thaw these out before using them which takes at least 2-3 hours (or overnight in the fridge) and then you can use them as you wish.
I tried eating these in many ways. I used them plain on a salad, made up a prawn cocktail and used them in a stir fry and in a curry.
On their own they have a slight fish smell and taste to them however are rather bland and a bit watery. They are moist and not one bit rubbery though and have a fresh feeling to them but for me were too small to hold flavour and didn't taste seasoned with salt at all.
Cooking with them was great as they are pre-cooked anyway and I found them to not go rubbery but to stay moist but once again although they gave the prawn appearance to my dishes they didn't taste highly of fish at all and along with the strong flavoured ingredients I used in my said dishes they completely lost their flavour though did add texture.
Handy and convenient, these prawns are simply not vile but do, for me lack quality. They are not big enough to contain flavour in my humble opinion and I won't be purchasing them again if I can help it any time in the near future lol.
Nutritional Information Per 100g:

Only available in Asda stores costing about £1.18 a bag.
I love prawns and my faves are deffo the jumbo king prawns because they're so yummy and juicy. I brought a bag of these Smart Price frozen prawns because I needed some small ones for a recipe and couldn't see the sense in spending more than I had to especially because small prawns have hardly got any flavour.
This 200g bag cost £1.17 and I reckon that's a good price for prawns of any size.
They don't take long to defrost even though each prawn is in an ice glaze, the prawns also haven't stuck together too much in the freezer and that's a bonus because some I got from Sainsburys were in one huge block when I took them out of the freezer and they weren't even the basics ones!
The prawns are quite small but they've got a nice sweet flavour when you eat them cold, they're already cooked so you haven't got to worry about poisoning yourself if you eat them straight out of the bag! lol They taste mega fresh and have got a nice flavour, the taste of these ones is much nicer than other small frozen prawns I've had and they actually do taste like prawns and not just have a faint fishy flavour.
The recipe I needed them for was for a spicey stir fry and they tasted yummy in that, even just putting them in the wok for 2 mins made them shrink though so make sure you stick loads in even if you're just cooking for yourself. I don't think they'd be much good in anything that has got to be cooked for too long because they'd shrivel up to nothing! The flavour was still good in the stir fry though so they must be better quality than you'd think from the price.
I'd still rather have king prawns because they're just BETTER all round but I'm going to get these again to keep in the freezer for when I can't afford a fiver for a pack of prawns. I've decided I'm having prawn cocktail sandwiches tomorrow and I reckon these prawns will be perfect for it because they need zero cooking and have got a nice enough flavour that I'll be able to actually taste them through the sauce.
Recommended..... cheap and delish!!!
I am a big fan of prawns and I love the possibilities they come with, so I thought Id give these a go.
These prawns took about 3-4 hours to fully defrost, which wasnt too bad. I took them out of the bag and decided to give them a wash before cooking them as you never know. The size of the prawns were of a good size, which surprised me a little. The colour of the prawns looked exactly as I would have expected also, so this was a good start. My prawns were clean and ready to cook at this stage. On this occasion I was simply making deep fried prawns in batter. I needed some grease so please dont judge me and thought prawns would be the slightly healthier...fatty option, if that makes sense.
I had my batter ready and dipped my prawns in the batter and then simply started to fry them. Once they were out of the hot oil, I let them cool down abit before trying them. I will admit they didnt have the exact full flavour of the normal prawns I get, but they seemed to taste ok! I was certainly satisfied with them and would buy them again. The texture of them was nice and soft and with abit of salt and some sauce and you wouldnt have even known they were Asda Smartprice.
Other things you could cook using these prawns are spring rolls, prawn stir frys, prawn cocktails, prawn rings, prawn salads, prawn fried rice and prawn omlette. I have tried a few of these dishes myself and I would say that I was satisfied with the results! Why spend more money that you need to. My favorite prawn dish / food is prawn spring rolls, simply delicious!
Prawn Spring Rolls
Ingredients include: prawns, pork (for even more flavour, not necessary), vermicelli noodles, shredded carrots, mushrooms, spring onions and of course the spring roll pastry (available in most asian food stores)
You simply have to try these...yummy!
If you are a prawn person, I would say that you will enjoy these.
this is a product at a very cheap price which i like using for rice dishes and for soups,i was pleasently suprised the first time i used it that it had an ok taste,i had bought it because i was trying to experiment with different brands of the same product to enable me find pne which would suit my needs at a cheaper price.the prawns inside are quite small in size though but i think the quantity is okay for the price that you get the product at,i use it to bulk up my soups and to give one a lil something surprising and extra to chew on during the meal, your friends will probably be surprised to see it in their food and think you spent some money to make it extra special for them and will probably be touched without realising that you didnt break the bank to do so
