      Delish Little Chicken Pieces

I got a box of these Mini Chicken Griddlers in Cool Trader last week for £1.00, they're made by Birds Eye and are small pieces of chicken that are coated in a bbq sauce. They are shaped into a sort of dipper shape and that's a bit stupid because they've already got the sauce on them and won't need dipping into anything else, they should have kept them chicken nugget shaped I reckon! lol

You can tell the chicken is better quality than a lot of frozen food, they've got the same sort of texture as eating proper chicken and deffo don't feel all springy and spongy like some chicken. You can't smell the chicken at all because the bbq sauce has got such a strong smell, there looks like there is just the right amount of sauce on each piece of chicken because it's not dripping off but the chicken is completely covered in it.

The taste reminds me of the bbq chicken bites you could get in KFC last summer, the bbq sauce on these Chicken Griddlers is lovely and sticky and has got a wicked smokey flavour that goes proper nice with the chicken. These aren't as strong as the ones from KFC but that's a good thing because the bbq taste on them was that strong it used to make me feel a bit sicky. This is a nice sweet bbq sauce that is strong tasting but not too much, I like the way Birds Eye have made it nice and smokey because it does give the chicken a bit of a flavour like it's been done on the bbq.

The bbq sauce has got a proper rich flavour and also tastes a bit like tomatoes, it sticks to the chicken good and makes them moist but isn't majorly strong because I can still taste the chicken through it. I like that it's a bit salty tasting but think that would put some people off, it's not like you can taste the salt big time but it made me feel a bit thirsty after I'd eaten my chicken bites.

You get 8 in a box and they're big enough that you get through them in 2 bites, I wouldn't have loads on my plate because I reckon the sauce would make them a bit sickly after a bit. Be careful how you eat them though because the sauce stains, the other day I gave my 2 year old sister one and she dropped a bit of the sauce on her top and it won't come out even using Vanish on the stain!!!

Recommended... delish little chicken bites that would be wicked with a salad, chips or jacket potato!!!

      .

The wife has been a fan of these for a while. We both like Chicken, but she would normally choose little snack bits of Chicken such as things like these before a larger bit of Chicken. I never bothered about these, but I liked the smell from them, and decided to have just the 1 one night. I liked it, so when out shopping we bought a couple of boxes of these.

These don't seem to be included on the £1 offer the same way as the other Birds Eye range, But theyw ere on an Asda Rollback to £1.20 about a month ago, whereas this little pack of 8 pieces can cost around the £1.50 mark.

These are frozen and you just cook these in the oven for around 15-20 minutes. This allows the Chicken inside to be tender and the coating to stay sticky and a tiny bit crisper.

These have a lovely taste. They are little bits of shaped Chicken Breast is a smokey, Sticky BBQ Sauce. There isn't too much Sauce, and jsut the right amount for you to get a good taste of it, but still taste the Chicken as well. This enhanses the Chicken and takes away the dryness of the Chicken.

Makes a nice snack, along with some Chips and Spaghetti. Not my most favourite Birds Eyey Chicken product, but a great change from the norm.

      Tasty little BBQ chicken griddlers

I picked some of these up last week in Asda as a lot of Birds Eye chicken products were in an offer and I've had these before so knew that I liked them.

These are small chicken griddlers which are made from 100% chicken breast and are coated in a BBQ glaze. They only take around 15 minutes to cook in the oven and you can smell when they're done as they give off a deliciously tempting spicy BBQ smell and under the heat they seem to sizzle a little on top.

The chicken in these is excellent - just as good as it is in every other Birds Eye chicken product - soft, tender and white. There are no breadcrumbs or coating on these but the outside of the griddler is a little crispier than the inside. I think the undercoat of the sauce turns a little crispy whereas the top coat of sauce maintains a liquidy sauce texture. The BBQ glaze is the most delicious sauce with a slightly spicy tangy flavour and a BBQ taste.

There are only 8 griddlers in a pack and they're pretty small so the box doesn't go very far which means that at the normal selling price of £1 they're not brilliant value. They're good to pick up every now and then or when in an offer though.

These really are a great quality product and a delicious product too and I'd recommend giving them a try for a tasty children's meal or just for a bit of a different meal for adults.

There are better frozen chicken products available

On a recent trip to Morrisons, I was looking at the frozen products on special offer & noticed Birds Eye BBQ Mini Chicken Griddlers. Although I like to cook most of my meals from scratch, I do have a slight addiction to these sorts of frozen chicken products & had never tried these ones before, so thought I'd give them a go, especially as they were on offer at £1 per box (normally around £1.50).

The product is described as 'chicken griddlers made with chopped chicken breast coated with a tasty BBQ glaze'.

Each 204g box contains 8 'griddlers'. When I picked up the packet, I had assumed that each one would be approximately the size of a fish finger - the box looks very similar to a Birds Eye Fish Fingers box, except with an orangey background instead of blue. At first glance the picture of the product on the box also looks like it would be a fish finger size. However, upon opening the box I was disappointed to find that the griddlers are more like the size of a chicken nugget, & the product looks very small in the box. It makes me suspect Birds Eye used a slightly bigger box than was really necessary in order to make it look more like their Fish Finger products. Looking at the picture on the front again, I noticed that it was zoomed in & cleverly angled to make it look bigger than it really is, & it also has a bite out of the end which makes you assume a large chunk has been bitten off when really it's only a tiny piece. I'm not saying it's false advertising, just cleverly done to give a certain impression. I know it's the job of marketing people to design packaging cleverly like this, but it does annoy me & puts me off the product a bit. (I realise the word 'mini' is in the name of the product but I assumed this just meant they were small compared to the size of a chicken breast!)

Anyway, once I'd accepted that a box would only really be enough for one portion rather than two as I had expected, I got around to cooking the griddlers. When you take them out of the packet, they basically look like chicken nuggets, but with a reddish coating on one side (the BBQ glaze). They also have ridges on them which makes them look slightly more 'posh' than the average chicken nugget. The griddlers need to be cooked straight from the freezer, in an oven at 190C for 15 minutes. They should be cooked with the glazed side facing up, & do not need to be turned over halfway through.

Once cooked, the griddlers give off a pleasant BBQ sauce smell, which reminds me of the smell of BBQ ribs ordered in a pub. When cutting into a griddler, the texture is softer than I expected; they don't really have a crispy coating like chicken nuggets or dippers, although the outside is browner & slightly crispier than the inside. The griddlers are also very soft to chew, which is not unpleasant but to me is not as enjoyable as the crunch of a chicken nugget. The texture is very moist due to the glaze, which sits on top as a thin layer of sauce. The BBQ flavour is extremely mild & not really spicy at all. The most noticeable flavour in it is tomato, although this is still not strong. You could say the flavour was quite bland, however it is still quite enjoyable, & the mildness of the sauce means you can taste the chicken itself more. I don't mind food that is a little bland, however if you like your food spicy or full of flavour then I wouldn't recommend these griddlers.

Although the taste of the griddlers was quite pleasant, I won't be buying them again. I don't think they're worth the money, even when on special offer, & there are plenty of tastier frozen chicken products available. The flavour of these was a little too bland & the texture too soft.

The griddlers contain 70% chicken breast (the box points out that they use 100% chicken breast, but that the other 30% comes from the glaze etc.), & they have no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives. The BBQ glaze includes sugar, salt, tomato powder, onion powder, apple juice powder, paprika, allspice, pork gelatine, natural smoke flavouring, & spice extract (chilli & black pepper). Allergy information: contains wheat.

Per 100g, these contain 159kcal, 15.8g protein, 1.3g sugar, 8.1g fat (2.6g saturated), 0.2g fibre & 0.8g salt. Per individual griddler: 40kcal, 4g protein, 0.3g sugar, 2.1g fat (0.7g saturated), 0.1g fibre, 0.2g salt. They also contain niacin (vitamin B3) - 10% of the recommended daily amount per griddler. This vitamin is naturally found in chicken.

These mini chicken griddlers are currently available in Morrisons & Asda, but not in Sainsbury's or Tesco.
