Birds Eye Chicken Chargrills Reggae Reggae
Advantages: GOOD CALORIFIC CONTENT.
Disadvantages: NOT A GREAT TASTE EXPERIENCE.
I was in a bit of a dilemma regarding what to have for lunch today. I am ususally full of ideas but today I needed inspiration in the form of an open freezer. Gazing into the ice cold wildreness, I saw a box of Reggae Reggae chicken chargrills. I had bought these a couple of weeks back from Asda when they were on offer for a £1 for a box of two chicken char grills.
The packaging of this box is very different to the other chargrills in the range that Birds eye produce. This box offers a more exciting and carribean feel. The warm colours used on the box I think give an indication that these grills are going to be a bit hot and fierey and a break from the mundane chicken in breadcrumbs.
Also on the front of the box is the ultimate cool Jamaican man, Levi Roots. I first saw Levi when he entered the Dragons den. (a tv show) and offered the dragons a chance to become shareholders in his Reggae reggae sauce. This sauce became an overnight sensation and is now sold in supermarkets throughout the uk. Birds eye have obviously blagged a deal with Levi for the use of his Reggae Reggae sauce on there chicken grills. Hence this product Reggae Reggae chicken.
On the reverse side of the box is great comprehensive information about the product. It promises that the chicken has been farm assured and reared with vegetarian feed. It also gives handy cooking instructions as well as a list of ingredients and nutritional values. There is also allergy information listed on the box.
I was pleased to find that each cooked chargrill contains 170kcal. I think that this is very good. I was a bit sceptical that due to the lowish calorie content the chicken chargrills might be on the smallish side. But I was happy to discover that this was not the case as inside the box are two generous sized portions of chicken.
I cooked my Reggae Reggae chicken grill on the George Foreman and after 10 minutes it was ready. I was pleased with the delicious aroma that filled my kitchen whilst this product was cooking. Almost a sweet Jamaican sauce smell. Which I found very appetising.
When ready the chicken looked very delicious. The Reggae Reggae coating was generous and had glazed the top of the chargrills beautifully. The chicken had not shrunk in size during the cooking process.
So now for the taste test.... Sadly I was not overly impressed with the taste of these chicken char grills. The sauce is a bit too sweet for my liking. I found that the Reggae Reggae sauce totally overwhelmed the taste of the chicken, which made the eating process quite sickly.
I have to remark on the quality of the chicken. From reading the back of the box my expectations were built up but I am sorry to report they came crashing down as soon as I started to eat this chicken. I found that the Chicken itself tasted quite synthetic. It was also quite chewy in parts and seemed overly plump. I am not questioning the authenticity of the claims on the box, but to me it just did not taste of a high standard.
I have eaten chargrilled chicken from birds eye on numerous occasions and have always been pleased with the offerings. However this time I was left feeling quite deflated and to me it tasted more like a wet weekend in Bognor than a Jamaican extravaganza!!
I would not buy this Reggae Reggae chicken again. It just did not satisfy me craving for a caribbean inspired flavour. I feel it fell very short of the mark.; However I am fully aware that this could be down to my taste buds and might be deemed as delicious by someone else.
So my advice would be to have a try but dont think you are going to get a tantalising taste bud tingle on your tongue. As I think if you do, then you may get disappointed!
