Advantages: Healthy, 100 % chicken breast, not too spicy!
Disadvantages: Can't really fault this one
I love birds eye food! I think it's a brand I find I can always trust to taste nice and to not be full of nasties. Birds eye have been making a wide range of frozen convenient food including fish, vegetables, chicken, red meat, rice, ready meals, pies, potatoes and desserts for over 60 years. They promise that they provide us with healthy, natural food. Birds eye take the best natural products and fast-freeze them at the peak of perfection to capture the freshness, taste and goodness. They don't use any artificial colours or flavours and they freeze to preserve their products naturally.
When scanning the aisles this week for my usual original chicken chargrills I came across these reggae reggae ones. I had recently seen the TV advert for Levi Roots reggae reggae sauce and thought it looked very nice so I indeed thought these were worth a try and would make a nice change from my usual original style chicken chargrills that I love so much. So today I had them for tea especially for you guys so I could share with you what I thought!
~ Product & Availability ~
Birds eye reggae reggae chicken chargrills are available to buy from all major supermarkets in store and online. You can buy them in boxes of two for around £1.52, I believe the original chargrills are also available in boxes of four and bags of six however I can't find the reggae reggae variety in these numbers which is a shame as the bigger bags are better value for money. I think £1.52 is a little bit expensive for two average sized pieces of chicken but it is good quality because It's birds eye and they are often on offer at a £1.00 a box so keep a lookout! The Birds eye chicken chargrills range also includes original, Mexican, peri peri and black pepper.
~ Packaging ~
Birds eye reggae reggae chicken chargrills come in a small rectangular cardboard box. The size of the packaging makes them ideal for squishing into your freezer as it takes up minimal room. The box I have at hand is different from the one Dooyoo are showing. The base of the box is still orange however there is no dashing picture of levi roots on the front, instead there is a picture of a beautifully chargrilled chicken breast on a plate with some rice. Looks very appetising, perhaps slightly more appetising than levi roots does. On the front of the box you will find the birds eye logo, nutritional information, the flavour of the product and I am told in a blue bubble at the bottom that this product is made with 100 % chicken breast, which is good to know as I expect nothing less from birds eye! The back of the box lists the ingredients, nutritional information in more detail, allergy information and cooking instructions. In the corner I am given a description of the product; reggae reggae chicken made with marinated chunks of chicken breast in a spicy jerk glaze.
~ Cooking & taste test ~
Removing the grills from the box I am greeted with some frozen orangey coloured chicken breasts, they don't look that appetising frozen but frozen food never does. Looking at them you can see that the orangey coloured coating is the reggae reggae sauce and underneath the chicken looks nice and white - just as it should. These grills take 20 minutes to cook at 220 degrees. Half way through cooking my kitchen was filled with the smell of gorgeous spices, very appealing to the nose and taste buds! The smell was quite fruity and tangy. Once the chicken was ready I took it out of the oven and couldn't wait to try the delicious, fresh looking bubbling chicken. The reggae reggae sauce on top had browned and was bubbling away happily. Cutting the chicken breast in half you can see it's very white and easy to cut into, just as it looks on the box. Now, I'm not a huge fan of spices as I like to taste my food rather than be on fire so I was pleased that these reggae reggae chicken breasts weren't too spicy. They were mild and the sauce complemented the chicken very well, for me there was just the right amount of sauce - I hate it when it's so covered in it that you can't taste anything else. I think spice lovers may be a little bit disappointed though as this definitely isn't hot, it's more of a tangy, fruity taste. Of course you get a hint of the chargrilled flavour which I love and again goes well with the sauce. These were cooked to perfection in twenty-minutes, moist, melt in the mouth chicken - definitely not chewy or dry like some frozen chicken breasts. I paired my reggae reggae chicken chargrill with some rice just like the serving suggestion on the box, I'm sure they would be equally nice with vegetables too, I've also had the original chicken chargrills chopped up in pasta and these might work the same with a slightly spicy twist.
~ other information ~
Each chargrill contains: 160 calories, 1.2g of sugar, 8.9g of fat and 0.6g of salt. So all in all a healthy choice to go with a meal.
Allergy advice: Contains wheat and soya and obviously isn't suitable for vegetarians as its chicken.
Birds eye reggae reggae chicken chargrills contain no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives.
~ Overall verdict ~
I really enjoyed these chargrills and they will definitely be a freezer staple in my house along with the original chicken chargrills. I think people looking for a hot dish may not be as pleased with this as I was but anybody who enjoys mild spices will love this! These chargrills are also quite healthy and low calorie so ideal as part of a healthy lifestyle. I think the sauce itself has quite a mature taste so I'm not sure whether children would enjoy this product. I would highly recommend this product as well as any of birds eye's other products as I find them such a trustworthy food brand.
Summary: 5/5 stars from me! Love the flavours and it's an exciting twist on chicken!
