      Advantages

      Disadvantages

      good on the odd occassion

I have started eating more healthily, but as these contain chicken and I don't eat them very often I buy them and also the other similar chicken ones from birds eye.

When they are on sale I tend to pick up two or three boxes containing two pieces of chicken per box. I alternate eating these with skinless frozen chicken that has less additives and no flavours.

Another reviewer claimed regarding this product 'The chicken tastes like breast' - I thought it tasted like chicken !
Anyway it is tasty and spicy and is quick and easy to cook taking only about 15 - 20 minutes from frozen.

      INGREDIENTS

It says it contains 53% chicken breast, although it is 100 % chicken. This really means that there is no other 'food' in it and the rest is water , preservatives, colouring etc.

Red pepper spices and Parsley make up the spicy flavour. Contains wheat.

Each serving ( means one piece of chicken I think ) has 245 calories and 2 g saturated fat.

      EATING

They are hot and spicy enough for me to have to take my time eating them, as the heat builds up. I do not eat a lot of hot currys or like super hot foods, I eat raw peppers and onions as I like them, but this is about as hot as I like food.

The chicken itself is good quality and you get a small to medium size piece, I have been known to cook two, one for later and eat both.

      VALUE

They are between £1.70 and £2.00 for a box of two unless they are on sale when they go down to £1 or two for one. On sale they are a real bargain and I pick up a few boxes as a change from my healthy food.

      Disadvantages

      A great quality chicken breast

I love Birds Eyes Chicken breasts topped in things so when I spotted this hot & spicy chicken x 2 in a box I was eager to try them out! At a pound a box (on offer at the time and it still is) in Asda I thought that it offered excellent value for money too and knowing that I usually like Birds Eye foods couldn't wait to get stuck into it!

      The Packaging:

Yellow box with a photograph of the chicken on the front and we are told that it is Birds Eye, 2 Hot & Spicy Chicken and that it is made with 100% chicken breast and contains no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives and there is an at a glance nutritional chart shown too. On the back of the box other information listed includes ingredients, allergy advice and a full nutritional chart is given, we are told how to cook it and contact details for Birds Eye are given. The box is informative and easy to open.

      The Chicken Itself:

What you get is two large and rather fat pieces of visually coated chicken. It's a yellowy colour and your meant to cook these from frozen either by cooking them in the oven for about 25 minutes or grilling them in around 20 minutes though I admit to being lazy and prefer instead to bung them in the oven till their time is up opposed to standing by a grill and flipping them!

When cooked these give off a nice chicken smell really, go golden in colour and look crunchy. The breadcrumbs contain dried red chilli, dried red pepper and dried parsley and you can see red flecks in the that mix if you peer at it hard enough.

The chicken tastes like breast, is well seasoned and moist and its a good thick piece too. It tastes grainy rather than processed and then the topping is crispy, crunchy and in places a little hard on the teeth though it all tastes great together texture and flavour wise. The breadcrumbs are a little greasy in places and moist though not too much so and the chilli and pepper do make this rather spicy and hot! If you like your food hot you will love these I bet!

I really like the quality and flavours of these. Tasty and spicy they are exactly what they say they are on the box, nothing more nothing less and I love them!

        Advantages

        Disadvantages

How do you like you Chicken? HOT!

When it comes to Chicken burgers you can sometimes find they lack that X-Factor, that zing of flavour. As a result it's sometimes tempting to try similar things that have something extra in them and one of the products that has been popular in my household recently has been the Birds Eye Hot and Spicy Chicken. Although not a direct substitute for a goo old chicken burger they are similar and and mix fine chicken with brilliantly tasty spices to leave a fantastic overall taste.

Sold in packets of two pieces in most major British supermarkets they come in the typical Birds Eye orange packets. When taken out of the packet they resemble two chicken pieces covered in breadcrumbs with black dots in the coating, it's those little black dots which come into play when you're eating them. This is because the breadcrumbs contain both pepper and chilli, really giving it some ooomph when you bite into it. And best of all, with them being made by Birds Eye you know you are getting a decent (not great but decent) level of meat in the product as well.

The cooking instructions are simple you can either grill the product for 20 minutes on a medium setting flipping it occasionally or oven bake it for 25 minutes at around 180c (or 200F/Gas Mark 6). The great thing about the timing of the process is it almost identically matches complimenting products such as potato wedges which can often take 20-30 minutes to cook allowing you to do both products to form a quick and easy meal.

When they are ready to serve you can place them in a bun or even slice them into pieces to have in a wrap (my sister does this for some odd reason) or, like mentioned earlier, have them with some wedges (or chips). The product should be left in the oven until crispy and the breadcrumbs "should" go a nice bright golden brown (though mine often end up slightly soggy and more orange than gold). Unlike many similar product, it's actually incredibly difficult to split the breadcrumbs and the chicken apart (like you can do with say battered fish), so take this is as a warning. If you do not like your food to be hot, do not try them, as you can't pick the crumbs off. When you cut the product you will see that the chicken in the centre is very compacted and white, if you squeeze it you can see water being squeezed out, which is a slight downer. Though it's the taste that matters and when you bite into them you will quickly realise they are intensely hot and spicy, for once the packaging doesn't lie. The hot and spicy taste can really be the sort of thing to set your throat on fire, for some this will put them of the product but for those who like spicy foods this is perfect.

Overall the product is one of the few that actually "does what it says on the packet", if your an idiot and you're wanting something with a soft chicken-like taste you will be disappointed as it's the spices that dictate the taste here. The key flaw is that it's been heavily watered to help fill it out and can be quite off putting, as are problems with fat and salt content. If you want "Spicy" and "Hot" chicken this is perfect for you as they really are firey hot.

        Some information about the product:
        It contains Wheat and Celery
The Chicken is 100% (this means it contains no other meat, though the product isn't 100% Chicken as there is a coating for example)
The product is comprised of 53% Chicken

Nutritional Information (per piece of about 95g)
        950 KJ Energy
        230Kcal (12% the RDA)
        14.0g Protein
16.0g Carbohydrates (of which 0.4g are Sugars)
12.0g Fat-17% the RDA (of which 1.9g are Saturates-10% the RDA)
        1.0g Fibre
        0.46g Sodium
1.2g equivalent as salt-20% of the RDA

This means the product is very high in salt and fat and this should be taken into consideration when eating the product.

        Advantages

        Disadvantages

        .

If I had to pick, this one would be my least favourite Chicken thing from the Birds Eye range. I know i've mentioned other ones that I didn't like, but after trying this one last night, I won't be trying this again. I like Hot Foods, but this was just too overpowering, and I didn't think there was as much Chicken in this one as the rest of the range, but I know by the pack size that there must have been.

This is in the freezers next to the other Birds Eye Chicken range. I think the normal price is around £1.60 for the 2 bits of Chicken, but the range is often on offer for £1 a pack, and that's when we stock up a bit. The wife hadn't tried this one either, so we got 2 packs for tea last night.

You just cook this in the oven for about 20 minutes and this does jsut right. The coating on the outside ends up crisp and the Chicken inside is soft and tender and perhaps a bit juicy. It tasted of Breast Meat, so it was a nice chunk of Chicken in here.

The coating on the outside was a Breadcrumb. It didn't seem that thick a coating, so I didn't expecting that much of a taste from this, but I was wrong. The Coating was crunchy, and it was pretty Hot and Spicy. It didn't taste that Peppery, but there was a sort of Red Hot taste, like jalapeno's or Peri Peri. It was just too overpowering and I had to have a drink at the back of having this.

Not for me. Just too nippy. I will stick to the others in the range.

        Advantages

        Disadvantages

Interesting change from the more bland options

These are actually hot! Normally when you buy something in a supermarket that calls itself 'spicy' or 'hot' you know it will be gently spicy at most. These are different - they really are hot and spicy and it might be too much for some people. I found them a refreshing change from bland spicy foods, but I did find myself eating drinking a bit extra! My partner used a little creme fraiche to cool his down.

The coating is a really tasty breadcrumb mixed with what I assume are peppers and spices. It's a thick coating and crisps up nicely in the oven. As with most of these things, overcooking isn't a bad thing for extra crispiness.

These come in at about 250 calories and 2.2g of saturated fat. I should imagine they are quite salty as well, so perhaps not the most healthy option out there, but not terrible. They go really nicely with chips, or baby potatoes and salad.

These are certainly the most interesting in the Birds Eye chicken range. If you like spicy things, but not as hot as these, I would recommend the Birds Eye peri peri chargrills which are milder and very tasty.

        Advantages

        Disadvantages

Very tasty and very spicy so keep a drink handy

The big supermarkets keep putting the Bird's Eye Chicken breasts in various flavours at £1 a box which makes them a very appealing meal for dinner.

The fact that these chicken breasts are 100% chicken is very appealing and makes you feel like these are going to be really tasty and filling meal. The hot and spicy chicken is exactly what it says on the box! They give your whole mouth a tingly feeling.

The box recommends cooking these at gas mark 6, 200 degrees or 180 degrees for a fan assisted oven for 25 minutes. However, I have a fan assisted oven and have followed these instructions and find that they need longer than the 25 minutes to look like they have been fully cooked, so I usually cook these at 200 degrees anyway just to make sure that they are properly cooked.

The chicken breast is coated in the hot and spicy coating its like a very fine breadcrumb coating and you can see the flakes of red pepper in the coating. The one thing you can say about these is that for once the image on the box does look like the contents and does look like it when they come out of the oven.

The guidelines on the box say that each breast has 230kcal (12% of your daily allowance) 12g of fat (17% of your daily allowance) and 1.2g of salt (20% of your daily allowance). Which does make not as healthy as you first think however, if you are incorporating them as part of healthy balanced diet they are not going to hurt that much

The coating on these chicken breasts is very tasty but unless you like things very spicy you do need to make sure you've got a drink by your side to help cool your mouth down!

Overall they make a tasty meal especially if you get them as part of the £1 offers that are in the supermarkets but if you are concerned about the high levels of salt then they might not be for you.

        Advantages

        Disadvantages

A very tasty but very spicy chicken breast.

This and some other birds eye products are currently on offer in most supermarkets for £1 per box which makes them almost irresistible to my trolley when it is being pushed around the store and therefore a couple of packets found their way on to this weeks shopping bill (low for a change!) and we promptly set about trying them tonight with some bombay potatoes and rice. Yum!

For £1 you got 2 chicken breasts which are approximately 230 calories and 12g of fat each. We had two with our dinner but I only managed one and a bit as I was quite full from my potatoes and rice (carb fest!).

Upon opening the cardboard box (which can be recycled), you are met with two chicken breasts which do look quite like the picture on the box. I could tell that these were going to be hot as there were lots of flecks of spices on there and when they were cooking I could really smell a spicy kind of smell.

These are chicken breasts covered with breadcrumbs and then lots of spices and herbs including pepper, cayenne pepper, chilli pepper etc and it is fair to say that there is enough spice on here to help the product live up to its name!

To cook the breasts you put the oven on gas mark 5 for 25 minutes but I cooked mine at gas mark 6 for 25 minutes as I was also making my Bombay potatoes with it and I wanted to ensure that everything was cooked thoroughly and ready to be eaten at the same time.

Once cooked the breasts looked apetising and I could really see the colour of the spices and it did have quite a red hue to it.

The chicken was fairly spicy and my lips were left tingling for a little while afterwards. The spice seemed to build in intensity with every bite and it really did live up to its name. I did not believe these were going to be particularly hot or I would not have purchased them. I know that sounds stupid but I usually find lots of products listed as 'spicy' to really be just about bearable for my delicate palette.

        Ingredients:

Chicken Breast (53%) , Batter , Seasoned Breadcrumb , Marinade , Vegetable Oil , Batter: Wheat Flour, Water, Salt, Raising Agents (E450, E500)#, Garlic Powder, Tomato Powder, Onion Powder , Black Pepper, Cayenne Pepper, Wheat Starch, Yeast Extract, Vegetable Oil, Spice Extracts , Natural Colour (Paprika Extract) , Seasoned Breadcrumb: Breadcrumb (Wheat Flour, Yeast, Salt), Dried Red Pepper, Dried Red Chilli, Dried Parsley , Marinade: Water, Wheat Flour, Salt, Wheat Starch, Maize Starch, Rice Flour Natural Flavourings (contains Celery) , #E450, E500 are the basic ingredients of Baking Powder which is used to make the batter light and crispy.

These are very spicy and if spice is your kind of thing then no doubt you will thoroughly enjoy these, as my other half did. It has been a couple of hours since I have eaten them now and my lips are still tingling quite severley so I would rate these 4/5 as I just could not handle the heat. They definitely live up to their name, the chicken is very nice as are the breadcrumbs and if these were just a little bit less spicy then I would purchase these again (then they would have to be called mild spice just for Katy!).
