As close to Beef Jerky as you can probably expect for 99p in the UK.

I am a big meat lover and when I spent some time in Canada I discovered Beef Jerky which is thin strips of fatless, flavoured and dried beef. When I returned to the UK I tried in vain to source a decent affordable Beef Jerky but it meant travelling too far afield and spending far too much money on what is basically a snack for in front of the tele.

Just last week however I discovered a product made by Jack Links called a BBQ Steak Bar which promised to be a snack sized bar of Beef Jerky with a BBQ flavour. I was not convinced it was going to be good but it only cost 99p so I thought I might as well give it a try.

The BBQ Steak Bar isn't the most appetising looking food item, the only thing I can think to compare it to is a damp looking rawhide dog chew but I can forgive the awful appearance because it smells so good! It has a rich BBQ aroma which makes this bar smell very much like the authentic beef jerky I found myself eating most days in Canada.

Biting into this bar I think it is absolutely delicious. I would not say that it is completely authentic to the fresher and less mass produced Jerky that I have eaten but it is very close and still very tasty indeed.

It takes some biting into, it's not exactly hard to bite into but it has rather a tough consistency which means you really do have to use your teeth to get through the bar. This is just how Jerky is supposed to be in my opinion.

The taste is quite hard to describe, I cannot exactly say it tastes of beef but it's certainly very meaty and could not possibly be mistaken for anything else. The overwhelming flavour is of BBQ seasoning and it's very nice, it tastes very similar to the BBQ powder I sometimes ask the butcher to marinade my chicken pieces in.

I honestly do like this meaty alternative to a chocolate bar and the absolutely brilliant news is that not only is it a very good source of protein, but there are less than 70 calories in each 25g bar! The Steak Bar is foil wrapped to keep it perfectly fresh as the slightest amount of moisture can badly effect the taste of Jerky.

I have personally only seen these BBQ Steak Bars in one shop, and it was located near those awful strips of Hot Beef Jerky that are also made by Jack Links. Steer clear of those, and grab yourself a packet or two of the Steak Bars.
