“ Type: Meat „
I always like a look around ASDA for the bargains or so called bargains, since we do seem to fall quite easily for the two for one's, which are almost certainly not a bargain, usually here you lose out on 25g of the product had you simply bought the larger single size. Anyway they were doing a special £1 for Matteson's Smoked sausages so I browsed then purchased.
Smoked sausage with garlic
I don't really know why I browed as soon as I saw the smoked sausage I knew I was buying especially at a pound. They were doing their original Smoked sausage, their Hot and Spicy smoked sausage and obviously the one I'm going to review the Smoked Garlic sausage.
The sausage is over a foot long and approx one inch in diameter making it a substantial eat. It curves over its length to look like a horseshoe and is a dark brown colour, and is made primarily with pork meat or so the packaging says. They arrive in a sealed plastic bag, which is really quite attractive and does kind of draw one's eye in its direction when passing. The picture of the smoked pork sausage on the front of the packaging is for a change pretty close looking to the contents therein so there is no deception going on.
On opening the package you certainly get a powerful whiff of garlic, and it is infused with a hint of the smokiness. Combined the look and the very pleasant aroma make this a very delightful prospect. The sausage can bee eaten as is........................cold or you can if you wish microwave it for a few seconds to heat it up, and I think this part is really just a matter of preference or in fact depends entirely on the mood you are in.
The sausage once heated if chosen, tastes as you might expect which is a bit of a novelty these days. Its quite solid and has a good consistency, but it is the smokiness which seems to be predominant as it should be in a smoked sausage, the garlic though it's smell is quite strong it definitely taking a back seat. That said it is very evident that there is in fact garlic in this delicious smoke sausage, and I think they have judged the proportions pretty much spot on. It's not too garlicky as to spoil the smokiness and vice versa it's not too smoky as to loose the very nice addition of the garlic.
I think these a great value for money, and they taste delightful, I tend to cut mine in half and save a decent portion for later, it gives me something to look forward to as a quick snack later in the day or evening. At a quid they are a great buy, and if I'm honest they are good enough to warrant a higher price tag, but a bargain is a bargain. I'm now looking forward to trying the hot and spicy one's
I have previously tried the mattessons normal smoked sausage and low fat smoked sausage and when I saw that Asda were doing these on offer for 2 for £2.50 thought I would pick up a couple of packs as standbys in the fridge to make a plain tomato pasta sausage a bit more interesting. I love garlic and as I hadn't tried the garlic version picked up one of these as part of the offer.
As with the other mattessons sausages it comes in a foil packet with the sausage in a shrink wrapped plastic container inside. The sausage is in a U shape as can be seen on the packet and is about 12" long.
With the sausage being shrink wrapped you need to be a bit more inventive to get the packet open than simply a open here or tear here section. Personally I cut the sausage with a knife where I wanted it and pulled it out of the packaging. Then I put the remaining bit of sausage in a container and back in the fridge to use again in a couple of days.
The smell of the sausage is no different to the other varieties, there was no smell of garlic, nothing to say that it was the garlic sausage in the pack and not one of the others in the wrong pack. But never mind I thought this would be that they haven't gone over the top with the garlic for those people who don't like it too strong.
The sausage is a similar consistency to a cooked cold sausage but more refined as it doesn't have any grisle in, more a smooth consistency all the way through. I easily cut through it with a knife and tried a piece before adding it to the pasta sauce I had made. It was a bit bland you could make out a very slight hint of garlic but it was barely there. As you can use this product hot or cold I wasn't that impressed with it cold so thought maybe cooking it slightly with the sauce might bring out more flavour.
So I chopped the sausage up and put it in the sauce and warmed it through for a few minutes before heaping a small (ahem well smallish) portion on to my pasta. It was still no better, you could taste the sausage but the garlic wasn't really there more of a unknown extra to it.
Per 1/4 of sausage
6.8g saturated fat
So not very healthy on the fat side and definately not on the salt. That's 20% of the RDA of salt so if you've added salt to your cooking or eaten some crisps etc. during the day you could be on for a salt overload.
Overall I wasn't that impressed with this and as it costs slight more when not on offer than the normal smoked or low fat sausage I wouldn't rush to buy this one over the others. If they added a bit more garlic to give it the taste your expecting then it would make a nice change but unfortunately in its current flavour combination I'm only going to give it 2/5 stars.
