“ Brand: Mattessons / Type: Meat „
Mattessons Hot & Spicey Smoked Sausage is a horseshoe shaped pork sausage which can be used either hot or cold. Both ways it tastes reallt great, in my personal opinion. It is easy to find in most large supermarkets but I buy mine from Morrisons as its the nearest to where I live. It costs £1.59 and is a very versatile sausage I always find.
I chop it up and put it onto my pizzas and I also just cut chunks off and eat it on its own. It keeps for ages in the fridge and is vaccum packed. As soon as you pull back the wrapper you are immediately hit with a strong smell of spice - it is very strong and not for the faint hearted but its the way I like my sausage to be. Smoked and spiced to the hilt!
It can be used hot or cold bu I like to put mine chopped up into salads or in stir frys - whatever takes your fancy really. It can make you a bit thirsty though so be careful but definitely recommended by me.
Great tasty treat which all the family will love, even the kids in my experience, my little lad loves this stuff.
We often get a Smoked Sausage and put it on a Pizza. There is a few different uses for Smoked Sausage and not just in a Sandwich. Asda is selling these for £1 a pack just now instead of the usual price which is around £1.40. They keep for a while as well since they are sort of shrink wrapped, so we bought a few.
It is normally the Original one we buy and this was the fitst time we had the Hot and Spicy one. Not sure why it has taken us so long to get this, as we like Hotter kinds of food.
This is just the usual U shaped sausage in the clear shrink wrap which is in the more colourful outer part. You just slice this as thin or as thick as you want the bits. We don't cut it too thick, so at a guess I would say we perhaps get around 30 slices out of this.
Although this has the same brown slightly shiny skin to it, when you slice this you will see the inside has a slightly more red tinge to it, and also you can smell a slight pepper scent to it. I had a slice before I put it on the Pizza and yes it does have a bit kick to it. Not quite apaprent when you first bite into it, but afterwards there is a nice but spicy tang.
Although I think I prefer the Original one as you can taste the Smoked taste that bit better this made a nice change and livened up our Pizza a bit more.
I brought this Mattessons Hot And Spicy Smoked Pork Sausage to go with my salad for dinner today, I love all these horseshoe shaped sausages and fancied something a bit spicy today and that's why I picked this one.
I love the meaty and firm texture of all of the Mattessons sausages, there's never any gristle or anything nasty inside it. The sausage tastes of pork and is lovely and smokey, the main thing I can taste though is the heat of the chilli and I thought this was a very spicy sausage!
The flavour is definately of chilli and I was surprised at how hot the meat is, I could also taste garlic in the sausage and I thought the 2 flavours went yummy together.
One bad thing is that I thought this sausage was quite a bit saltier than the rest of the Mattessons range, you can taste the salt in every mouth full but this isn't the case with others flavours in the range. The smokiness of the sausage is yummy, and the spice is also delish because it made the sausage a bit more exciting than usual.
I had mine just in a lump with my salad and it was delish, but the best way to use the sausage I reckon is to chop it into thin slices and mix it in with pasta and a nice creamy sauce. If you use mayo it will take some of the heat out of the sausage but still let it keep it's delish chilli tang.
The sausage is about £1.45 and that's a good price I think, but it comes vaccum packed so you've got to have a suitable container to put it in after you've opened it to stop it going off quick.
Mattessons Hot & Spicy Smoked Pork Sausage
A more noticeable packet than the ordinary smoked sausage with firey 'Hot and Spicy' emblazoned across the front.
Promising a hot sausage, you will not be disappointed.
It shows the large sausage contained within. Once inside the sausage is further wrapped in a vac sealed plastic sleeve.
Costs vary but on average it will set you back around £1.50
Smell and Look
Even before opening the vac pac you can smell the sausagey pork, delish. When the Vacuum pack is opened you are immediately hit by the aroma of a deep tangy and spicy smell.
The sausage itself looks massive, in its horseshoe shape. It is firm and gratefully looks appetising; after all they say the first bite is with the eye.
Once cut into it actually looks like a large firm hot dog sausage. But don't be fooled it really is lovely, if a little unhealthy.
It has a good 'bite' to it, a bit like a hot dog sausage only far firmer. The taste is thankfully not too over powering and you do get the right mix of traditional sausage with the spicy taste and a distinctive pork flavour and boy does it have a kick.
Well there is not much you can't use this for,
Chopped fine and thrown into a salad or sliced a bit thicker and added as an extra pizza topping. You can dice it and pop it in your stir fry or perhaps simply microwave it and have it on a sandwich which is my preferred method when working my 2nd night shift, which for some reason I am always hungrier on.
You could if you really wanted to be bad, fry it and have it as a hot toasty snack but have never been inclined to add anything more in the way of grease or fat to this snacky sausage.
Or another favourite way is to chop it up and mix it in with scrambled eggs on toast, very tasty.
Worth a try and definitely worth having one in the back of the fridge. It can be eaten as a snack or part of a main meal. Ok it is not the healthiest food you will have but for the occasional treat it will satisfy your stomach and your taste buds.
The kids will love it but then they always love the unhealthy stuff. They will especially love it with tomato sauce for dipping it into.
There is a reduced fat version and a regular smoky version, both of which are tasty to eat.
Give it a try, just not too often.
Apple o gees for some of the Double Entendres used here, I couldn't resist.
