      These are very acceptable fish fingers which are cheap and great value for money

      Morrisons Haddock Fish Fingers are, as to be expected, found in the frozen food section and come in a black & white elongated box that has an image of some fish fingers, chips and beans on the front. The back of the box contains the nutritional information, ingredients list, allergy advice, cooking instructions, Morrisons' quality claim and contact details, plus a statement that the packaging is not recyclable and a promise that efforts are being made to rectify this.

      I love fish fingers, and always try to opt for either the haddock or hake variety, as though there's nothing wrong with cod, I find it a bit insipid.

      On opening the pack, I noticed that the standard-sized fish fingers were packed rather loosely inside and rattled around a bit, but I didn't mind as that made for easy removal. They weren't welded together, so I didn't have to resort to using hacksaws and blow torches to remove the 4 fish fingers for my meal. Also, the rather dark orange coloured coating adhered well to each finger, making less of a mess than some other brands are guilty of.

      I decided to push the boat out and for once (or maybe twice!) in my life, fry the fish fingers, instead of my usual grilling method. During the frying process, there was no distinguishable odour of fish, and next door's cat didn't leap on the fence looking at me with that endearing expression of longing - he remained perched on the shed in his own garden, seemingly oblivious to the fact that I was cooking his favourite food.

      I turned the fish fingers several times during the cooking process, and even after about 10 minutes on each side frying in very hot oil over a medium heat, there was still that gungy white stuff which seeps through the breadcrumbs - so, I continued to nuke them until the gunge vanished; result - very well-cooked breadcrumbs!

      As I served the cooked article onto the plate, each fish finger made a sort of clunking sound, and I hoped that my nuking procedure hadn't rendered them harder than the Kohinoor diamond; just as a precaution, I armed myself with a heavy-duty carving knife. On slicing into the first fish finger, I found that the damage of cooking for longer than recommended was minimal, and my ordinary knife cut easily through the very well done breadcrumb coating. The fish inside appeared white and succulent, so I proceeded with the taste test.

      Crunch crunch - mmmm not bad! The breadcrumbs tasted good, but were a little too greasy for my liking. That was my own fault though, for frying the fish fingers instead of grilling them. The haddock flavour was mild, but very definitely haddock - not cod, or a mixture of non-specific "white fish". In the first fish finger, the haddock was in nice large flakes, but when I cut into the second one, I found that it was half mush and half flakes. Through the course of eating all four fish fingers, I experienced mixed fortunes regarding the consistency of the haddock - some contained what looked like reconstituted minced fish, and some contained half and half well formed haddock flakes combined mashed mush! The mush tasted the same as the flakes though.

      After I'd finished eating my meal, I concluded that Morrison's Haddock Fish Fingers, is a reasonably tasty and economical product. I certainly will buy them again, but next time I'll make sure that I grill instead of fry them. Because they don't shrink in cooking, four is plenty even for my appetite, and I'd imagine that three might suffice for somebody with a more normal food requirement than my own. The only two little mild gripes I'd have is that they did need cooking longer than recommended on the packet, and the fish is of maybe not mixed quality, but certainly of mixed consistency.

      Not quite 10/10, but getting there.
