A Tiny Snack With A Hefty price Tag

Advantages: Can Be Used For 10 Lunches
I am always on the lookout for new mini snacks that I can add in to my sons packed lunch box. The product currently under review is Peperami Minis pack of 10. Unfortunately finding things that he will actually eat and wont just bring home untouched is no mean feat. He is quite a fan of salami which I have to say I thought would be one of the last things that he would want to eat as he tends to be fussy. However this fussiness can change as often as the weather so what he wont eat one week will be just fine the next. I used to buy him large peperamis however I found that it became quite expensive as they are priced around the 60p mark individually. I would therefore only put the occasional one as a treat in his lunch. However I recently discovered mini versions of this item which were more reasonably priced and this has become a frequent addition now as they are more economical.
These snacks come in packets of ten and cost £2.10 which work out better value for money at 21p per piece. You can buy them in all of the main supermarket chains in the dairy and snack chiller section. They are easy to spot as they stand out a mile on the shelf in their bright green shiny foil packaging. I bought two packs for £3.50 recently on promotion at my local Tesco however I find that offers for this particular product are rare. I was quite surprised when doing my research for this product that it is actually produced by Unilever a company which is more associated with washing and cleaning products. The product itself comes packaged in soft foil which is ideal for keeping the product fresh. In addition each individual item has another foil cover. Inside of which is a plastic cover which can be removed easily prior to eating. Each peperami has an easy tear strip which makes opening the product simple and is particularly useful for young boys who struggle with such things!! The snack itself is approximately an inch and a half in length and three centimetres thick.
Peperami quite simply is spicy pork salami which is made in Germany and shipped all over the world. Apparently it is made with 13.8g of Pork for every 10g of sausage. I appreciate that the maths at the moment doesn't add up this is due to the fact that the pork loses some weight from moisture loss during the natural drying process. It is also pasteurised too for food safety. All other ingredients are obviously a trade secret as they are not listed. However Peperami minis do contain 2% of the daily amount of calories, 4% of the daily fat intake, 6% of the daily saturated fat intake and 9% of the recommended salt intake for children aged 5-10 yrs.
I have to confess I am not a great lover of salamis and was not overly impressed with this product. I find it rubbery, plasticy very chewy and generally unpleasant. It also leaves a really disgusting aftertaste in the mouth and I find myself belching after having one for the remainder of the day. My son on the other hand cant get enough of this little snack finding it really tasty as he always asks for another one. Great if you are seven years old or a lover of peperami sausage. Or if you require something different to pop into your child's lunchbox. Worth a try and a great alternative to sugary snacks.
