“ Brand: Peter's / Type: Meat „
I've gone a bit mad on the Peter's range of pastry foods because the shop by me has had them all on special offer, none of it has been anything special even though it's all nice BUT this Pork And Pickle Sausage Roll is one of the best sausage rolls I've ever eaten!
I had mine hot because I'm not mad keen on cold sausage rolls and it only took 20 mins in the oven, you can nuke it but most sausage rolls go madly soggy in the microwave so I'd rather wait.
When it's cooked the pastry is lovely and flakey, it leaves flakes all over the plate when I cut into it and has a delish fresh smelll to it. It tastes wicked too, the pastry is a bit thicker than on a lot of sausage rolls and that makes it more filling and also means that the pastry has it's own taste even though the sausagemeat inside it has got quite a strong flavour.
The sausagemeat is GORGEOUS! It's got the same sort of flavour as the fresh sausage rolls that you get in Greggs and places like that, it's quite a strong taste but you can deffo taste the pickle through the meaty flavour too. The pickle is sweet and a bit vinegary at the same time, but it's weird because my mum doesn't like pickle but she loves these sausage rolls. The first one I had I didn't think my mum would like it because the pickle tastes quite strong to me but she swears she can't hardly taste it at all.
To me the filling of this sausage roll is one of the nicest I've had because the taste of the pickle makes it taste special. You know them pork and pickle pies, the pickle is usually quite faint and just changes the flavour a bit so that you know it's there. With this sausage roll you can actually taste the pickle and that gives it a proper different flavour, I've never tasted sausagemeat quite like this before and I deffo love it and will buy these sausage rolls again.
The other day in Sainsburys, whilst stopped to pick up some cat food, I started to get a little bit peckish. Having not had a pork pie in absolute ages, I decided to peruse Sainsbury's selection. Instead, I found myself picking up one of these instead ~ partly because they were relatively new on the shelves and because the idea of a pork and pickle sausage roll intrigued me! At 64p too, these looked like being a bargain at half the price ~ provided of course, that they proved to be as tasty as they looked!
And I am pleased to report that they are! The flaky pastry is not too flaky, not dry or soggy but just right in constintency. The sausage meat is generous in portion and seems of a reasonable quality and the pickle flavour is subtle, a little sweet but not overpowering. My wife had a bite and was impressed and does not even like pickle!! As for me, I can honestly say this is amongst the best shop bought sausage rolls that I have ever bought! Certainly there is much here to recomend and if you do happen to be passing the appropiate shelf whilst shopping, I would strongly suggest you pick one of these up and try for yourself. Obviously though, these are not suitable for vegetarians.....
