Advantages: Responsibly sourced and tasty fish fingers for 60p.
Disadvantages: Paying that little extra can give you better quality. Pollock not cod.
Ever since I was a young child, I have always loved fish fingers, whether they be with chips, in a sandwich or just as a snack. Since becoming a student and having to start cooking my own meals; this essentially means that I buy some bargain frozen goods and just stick them in the oven as I please. My local supermarket is a Sainsburys, and I have heard many good things about their basics range which is their own branded products. I thought I would pick up their fish fingers and give them a whirl to see how they tasted.
The first thing that attracted me to these was the price. I believe I paid around 90p for these, but according to Sainsburys website they are now 60p which is a complete bargain, meaning essentially you are paying 6p per fish finger and that is a fantastic bargain when you are on a tight budget. One of the reasons I opted for these was that other branded products were up to three times as much, and I am not willing to pay that for a few fish fingers.
The packaging of the product is fairly simple which is no surprise as it is their basics range. I was a little bit dubious at first as to whether I should purchase fish products from this range in case they were low in quality, however I thought I would give them a go. When I opened up the packet, you get ten fish fingers inside which are all a standard size, and they looked pretty normal to me so I had no problems!
You simply have to put them in the oven, but ensure you flip them over so that they are cooked properly, and when I pulled them out of the oven I was pleasantly surprised. They smelt absolutely delicious and they looked lovely and crispy. One thing I was a little worried about was that the fish inside them is not cod and is instead Alaskan pollock which is something I had never heard of before. Thankfully, it tasted no different to cod at all and I found these fish fingers delicious for the price which they were. They were bursting with flavour and filled me up for a good few hours! Although purchasing from a more upmarket brand would give you a better quality, I do feel that you really get good value for money if you purchase these ones!
One thing you must take care of is that there could be bones within these fish fingers. Even though it is unlikely that there will be any inside, there is a warning located on their website. One thing I am also happy with these fish fingers is that they are all responsibly sourced which I know is quite an important factor when buying foods for some people, so that is always a plus.
As far as the nutritional values go, each fish finger contains 49 calories and 2.1 grams of fat. Personally, I feel this is a fairly good nutritional level to have as part of a main meal, and I think these fish fingers are excellent for all types of people, particularly children and students who are on a budget.
Overall, I would definitely recommend these fish fingers to everybody as they are filled with flavour for a bargain price of 60p, who could say no? Thanks for reading.
Summary: Delicious own branded fish fingers.
