I have always been a little dubious with regard to the quality of the fresh Basic & Value products that are on offer but in another cost cutting exercise I thought I would try Basics Cooked Ham. The ham is located with the other cooked meats, usually on the bottom shelf (as with the majority of the basics brand - it's cheaper so you have to reach further!). It is simply packaged in a square, clear plastic tray, with a strong film lid that must be peeled back to take out the ham. This is not resealable so I normally put the packet and its remnants in a freezer bag. The ham is easily identifiable with the basics logo in it's trade mark orange and ... Read the complete review

Sainsbury's Basics Cooked Ham In our attempt to save a little money on the food bills, we have started trying out a few of the basics range from Tesco, Sainsbury's and Asda. I feel that the bits we have got so far are a bit hit and miss. Some products such as basic bread is either too dry or literally fall apart and is no use for sandwiches. Others, such as the cheap hot chocolate granules are passable, and some such as certain toffee yogurts are absolutely amazing. We usually get the Tesco basic ham now as I find it just as good as the more expensive ham, though as Sainsbury's is closer to us, we sometimes find it easier just to pick a ... Sainsburys have put a lot of effort and advertising money into promoting the quality of their higher end own brand food range, for which Jamie Oliver is the painted lady on the flagship of the supermarket's promotional armada. However, rather surprisingly, Sainsburys have almost neglected any public promotion of their basics range. I frequently consume a lot of food from the basics range, and am keen to review the Sainsbury's basics cooked ham for the following reasons: QUANTITY: each pack has around 30 slices in it, which can make either 10 or 15 sandwiches depending on whether or not you use 2 or 3 slices per sandwich. The ham isn't of the 'wafer thin' ... Read the complete review

Despite the no frills packaging, Sainsbury's Basics Cooked Ham is surprisingly tasty and great value. At only £1.38 for 400g, that's approximately 30 slices, it is very reasonably priced. The slices are quite thin but the packet is sold by weight rather than number of slices so there is no need to feel cheated by this. I was a bit worried that Sainsbury's Basics Ham would be a let down in the taste department. However it has a really nice meaty taste that is great in sandwiches, omelettes, on top of pizza's and on top of beans on toasts. As it is reformed ham, it certainly lacks the high end finesse of off-the-bone ham, but at £1.38 for 400g I am certainly not ... Read the complete review

For people who read my reviews regular will know I love my food and snack a lot and my wife was shopping in Sainsbury's recently and was looking for something cheap for snacking and she saw this Ham and thought she would buy it as it was very cheap. It comes in a plastic container with a pull off plastic top, and with the orange and white basic colours of their lower ranged of products and for only £1.38 for 400g it is an amazing price and there are 30 square slices of ham. Each slice is quite thin and they are a good size of approximately 6 inches x 6 inches, which is a good size for using for sandwiches. The texture is smooth and soft ... Read the complete review
