“ Brand: Sainsbury's / Type: Meat „
When I was in Sainsburys the other day I brought a pack of their Basics bacon to try, it was only £1.48 for a 300g pack and that's about 8 slices. The reason I thought I'd try it is because my dad's getting on my case about buying a pack of bacon for £3.00, eating 2 rashers and then chucking the rest in the bin when it goes out of date. I'll probably still do that but at least we're not wasting such a mad amount of money! lol
The bacon comes shrink wrapped but when you've opened the tight packet and took the bacon out you'll see it looks loads nicer than it did. The fat looks thicker than other bacon but the actual meat isn't full of fatty parts like I was worried it was going to. The rashers are also quite thick, they don't look the business because the edges are a bit rough and there are a few tears in the bacon but that doesn't bother me.
I cooked my bacon under the grill and it was fine, there's not a lot I can say about this product apart from that because it's just bacon but in a naff packet! lol
The fat on this bacon is what put me off because it's dead thick, I sorted this by simply chopping it off before cooking the bacon and then it was just the same as the more expensive bacon. It cooks evenly and has got a yummy meaty flavour when it's done, I had some for my breakfast this morning on a butty and once it's cooked I couldn't tell the difference between this and bacon that costs double.
You can freeze this bacon and I've stuck a few rashers in the freezer to try because that might be the way I stop wasting bacon, it's stupid throwing it away like that when it's mega expensive (not this one I mean other packs of bacon) but who can eat 8 rashers in 2 days??? Not me and because I'm the only one in the house who likes bacon enough to buy it I suppose it deffo is my fault that so much is going in the bin.
Recommended.... just cut the fat off before cooking!!!
This is a review of Sainsbury's unsmoked bacon from their basics range.
I picked this up as part of the ingredients for my Husband's New Year breakfast, his once a year fry up treat. The bacon comes shrink wrapped and requires some scissors or a sharp knife to open.
I don't buy bacon often and am not an expert on the subject but generally I look for unsmoked, non fatty and a good price without landing myself in a two packs for x price deal as I know we won't use it all before the use by date.
This bacon is quite reasonably priced at £1.49 for 300g pack which works out to be approximately 10 thinly sliced rashers. The other packs I looked at ranged around £2.99 for the same amount so I went for the cost-saving choice!
There's not too much fat on them but enough to make it tasty, and not too salty which is one of the reasons we avoid bacon usually. I fried the bacon up and on New Year's Day and we had the leftovers for tea a couple of days later.
It was really popular with my hubby and he was none the wiser that it was actually from the basics range. I would buy this brand again and would be interested to try some of their other basic range products.
To me, Sainsbury's is one of the more expensive supermarkets but it looks like they are aiming to combat the stigma of being priced out of the market as people become more savvy about what they spend and who they spend with. Judging by the bacon, with the basics range you are still getting the quality of Sainsbury's but at a price that competes with the value range at Tesco or the Smart Price at Asda.
Sainsbury's has to be one of those supermarkets that you visit with the intention of buying a half a dozen items and you end up coming out with a trolley full. Our local Sainsbury's definitely has pulling power, I have to have a wander around the aisles that are crammed with all things tempting and that certainly includes the selection of clothing that they have to offer.
On the whole I don't buy as many of the Sainsbury's Basic products as I used to, I usually head for my local discount store where I manage to pick up the good brand names for knock down prices.
But having said that I have picked up many a packet of the Sainsbury's Basic back bacon.

A 300g pack of the Sainsbury's Basic back bacon will cost you in the region of £1.48p and that has to represent good value.
Bacon and egg used to be `an end of the week` meal that you enjoyed when the housekeeping money had all but run out but these days bacon is can be an expensive choice. If you take a good look at the bacon on the deli counter you would be shocked at the price of some cuts.
The Sainsbury's basics back bacon is vacuum packed in a plastic sheath and it is undeniably from the `Basics` range because it bears that familiar orange label.
The slices are well cut and reasonably thick, I always think that thinly sliced bacon seems to do a disappearing act once it hits the hot fat. One thing that I will mention is that sometimes the bacon can seem to be cut a little `near to the shoulder`, this gives you larger and wider slices which may not be quite as tender. But if you are a very fussy bacon buyer then you would choose one of the well known brand names that can offer you the perfect rasher.
The Sainsbury's basics bacon frys and grills well and it would please those who like to have a little bit of fat on their rashers. The bacon is ideal for a snack, for breakfast or for putting in a sandwich
It is not too salty either, salty bacon tends to make me thirsty for hours afterwards.
The bacon can be frozen, so if you happen to see it on offer then you can take advantage of that.
It is also suitable for coeliacs to eat and enjoy.
A 50g portion of the Sainsbury's basics bacon contains 121 calories, 10.3g of fat, 3.8g saturated fat, 1.84g salt and no sugar.
Yes, you can buy the lean bacon that especially caters for weight watchers but I always find that that bacon has little or no taste, that small amount of fat on normal bacon helps add that good taste.
I also buy the Sainsbury's cooking bacon, I believe that this is another product that is in the `Basics` range. The large pack of cooking bacon is marvellous, some of it will be in oddly shaped slices and some may be in chunks but those chunks make good meaty lardons that are ideal for adding to soups and omelettes. I open the large packet and then sort the contents out, some will grill, some will freeze for use in quiches and the remainder can be frozen down for lardons and soups.If you hit the jackpot there may well be a few `tidy` slices that will fit into a sandwich too!
If you compare the price of the Basics back bacon it does work out considerably cheaper, 275g of Danish unsmoked back bacon can set you back as much as £2.99.
If you are going to serve the bacon to guests then you may well choose the choice cuts but if you are just using it for an everyday meal then the Basics back bacon is as good as any.
Back to Basics - Well done Sainsbury's.
*The cost of food goes ever upwards*
While I strongly suspect that some commentators are exaggerating rises in food costs, the price for fresh and processed meats have definitely risen over the last couple of years. I've taken this on the chin up 'til now, as meat production is fairly wasteful versus growing crops and unpredicatable rises would seem to be par for the course.
I decided to try this product as I was somewhat horrified at the current prices for bacon, which can easily reach £3+ for a 'premium' product. This bacon is currently retailing for £1.48 at www.sainsburys.co.uk, the source of almost all our groceries. As it's an own brand product I'll not bother with an availability statement, although I strongly suspect that the 'metro' style stores won't usually have this in stock.
*Appearance and quality*
All in all, my experiences with this product have been positive. Slices are typically thick and even and while there is a layer of fat at the edge of the bacon this is to be expected with back bacon. It is, as they say, the nature of the beast! There is some added water, but it is considerably lower than other offerings from major supermarket chains and I find you need a little 'fluid' to crisp up bacon anyway. While fantastic rare breed bacon might be luxurious, it can be a bit hard to fry up to my satisfaction.
*Taste and versatility*
This bacon is suitably meaty and has a good texture. I'm a smoked bacon man at heart, but have become increasingly aware of the risk of additional carciogens incurred through eating smoked food. This is a decent substitute and the tender, thick slices just about make up for missing that familiar smoky flavour.
As some of you may have noticed from the smattering of recipes I've posted, I'm a keen if inexperienced chef. This bacon is great for cooking with and it lends itself well to being fried, baked, or casseroled with a selection of root vegetables and a touch of cider. While it may not be up to the standard of the breakfast connoisseurs out there, it really comes into its own during cooking and can often be found bulking up a chowder, chunky soup or winter stew in our kitchen.
I have no idea where this bacon has come from and this is something of a gripe. At the cost I doubt the RSPCA will be rushing up to award it for being produced at any particularly good farm and this is perhaps the only thing that puts me off! A bit more transparency from Sainsbury's would be nice, but this would probably up the price.
