I love a good sausage, and Sainsburys make some excellent ones, with a pack of 6 Taste the Difference sausages costing £2.99, but frequently on a 2 for £4 offer.
They have a wide variety of flavours - Pork and Apple, Red Wine and Venison, Pork and Caramelised Onion, to name but a few. However, in this review I'm going to focus on the latest variety I've tried - Pancetta and Parmesan .
The packaging, as you can see above, affords you a good look at the plump sausages lying in the pack - pale pink in appearance with some darker bits showing through the skin - the pancetta (Italian bacon) presumably. From reading the back of the pack, I can see that these have a high meat content - 83% pork and 5% parmesan . You'd expect good numbers from a premium sausage, of course, but that is still some respectable meatiness.
I like that the pack includes oven instructions, as this is my favourite method of cooking sausages - 25-30 minutes in a pre-heated 190 degree oven, turning once, and the sausages are done - with your kitchen smelling wonderfully herby and meaty.
I serve these with mash and veg, and I don't think a 'fancy' sausage really needs gravy or condiments, as it just masks the flavour . Biting into one of these, I was delighted to find it was lovely and moist inside still, with a slightly course texture. The cheesiness of the parmesan was immediately present, combined witht he good quality pork and some herby parsley. The pancetta was coursely chopped inside the sausage, and had an intense flavour when bitten into. These sausages are magnificent - extremely tasty .
However, the luxury comes at a cost, calorie wise, with each sausage containing 167 calories, and 13.4g of fat. Still, sometimes it's fun to forget the calorie counting and just enjoy your food .
An excellent sausage, full of flavour and texture, and well worth the £2.99 a packet. If you can get these on offer- even better! 5 stars!
The fry up is something that my fiancé and I enjoy once every few weeks and we like to try lots of new items to try and find the ultimate breakfast combination. While we cannot always afford to buy more premium products a special offer reducing these sausages from £2.59 to £2.00 was enough to prompt me to snap up a packet of these sausages.
The sausages are provided in the usual plastic tray wrapped in cellophane and covered with a cardboard sleeve. The cooking instructions, nutritional information and ingredients are all displayed on the sleeve.
These sausages can be cooked in any of the usual manners and I cooked mine in the oven for around 30 minutes and the colour of these changes considerably to a muck darker colour and they looked very appetising. I only turned them once during cooking and did not add any oil to them and found scarcely any fat on the tray afterwards.
The sausages were quite thick and when I cut in to them I could see the parsley within. The sausages are very well made and the pork works very well with the pancetta and the parsley really came through to my taste buds without being too overwhelming. The parmesan brought a delicious subtle flavour to the sausage and there were no horrible gritty bits in these sausages at all.
Each sausage contains 167 calories, 0.8g sugars, 13.4g fat, 5g saturated fat, 0.4g fibre and 0.75g salt so these sausages should definitely be enjoyed in moderation.
Overall I found these sausages to be delicious and I would definitely buy these again in the future. The taste was lovely and these sausages went so nicely with beans, bacon and toast. I could really taste the difference with these sausages and next time they are on offer I shall purchase these again. I rate these 5/5 as the combination of flavours worked very well together especially as part of a fry-up!!
