Lovely, healthy and generally a good purchase

Tonight I popped to Tesco as I needed to fill my freezer up pretty badly. Being on a tight budget I was looking mainly for shops own products or things on offer etc when I stumbled across these sweet chilli prawn skewers on offer from usually £2.00 a box to only a pound and I thought that they were a bargain so I actually grabbed a couple of boxes of them as I adore prawns and seafood in general

      The Packaging:

The skewers come in a see though plastic packet and in a box. The box is oblongish in shape and black in colour and there is a photograph of the skewers on the front of it and we are told that they are Tesco 'BBQ' 8 Sweet Chilli Prawn Skewers '8 King prawn skewers in a delicious sweet chilli marinade' and that they contain no artificial preservatives, flavours or preservatives, that they cook from frozen in 15 minutes or barbeque in 19 minutes, the weight is stated which is 165g and there is an at a glance nutritional chart shown. On the back of the box other information listed includes ingredients and allergy advice, there is a full nutritional chart shown as well as cooking instructions and contact details for Tesco are given. Nice enough, informative packaging this is.

      The Prawn Skewers:

What you get is 8 small wooden skewers each with 2 king prawns on them. To cook them you have to take them out their original packet and into the oven for between 13-15 minutes. The prawns are slightly pink when the go in the oven and visibly are coated in a sauce/marinade that is an orangy colour. They cook very really well in 13 minutes and the sauce they are in goes into the prawn making them very succulent indeed so you not really left with any sauce/marinade it disappears.

These taste really great! The prawns although King prawn are not massive but are certainly not tiddlers. Theres no shell on any of them or horrible veiny sort of threads or anything and the sauce/marinade, although I can't detect any chilli flavouring in them does make the prawns juicy and add a very slight natural sweetness to them.

These retain the flavour of prawns, they are 'meaty' and not rubbery and taste and look good, your even able to pull these off the skewers with complete ease.

A fantastic purchase even at £2.00 a bag!

These Would Be Perfect With A Better Sauce

Our local Tesco was selling all their summer frozen food off just before Xmas, I reckon they'd found a warehouse size freezer full that they'd forgotten about because there was loads of stuff that they'd reduced big time. Tesco price reductions are usually crap, the reduced meat usually only goes down by a few pennies so I remember being shocked that these were marked up for £2.00 but had been reduced to 49p a box!

You cook them from frozen and they can be done on the bbq or under the grill.... we've still got ice in Birmingham so it was deffo the grill for us! lol

They don't look all that nice frozen and you only get 2 prawns on each skewer. When they're cooked they plump up nice though and the sauce looks wicked, it's got a creamier look that most sweet chilli sauces and it smells nice too.

The prawns taste lovely and fresh, they've got a yummy juicy texture and the ends go a bit crunchy. Not exactly crunchy that's the wrong word but they've deffo got a different texture to chew than the rest of the prawn.

The sauce is nice but it hasn't got a strong flavour like I thought it would. I didn't want them exactly HOT but there's not a lot of actual chilli flavour and there's not much spice to them at all, the sauce has got too much of a sweet flavour for me and even though I could have eaten loads of the prawns the sauce got a bit too sickly after a couple of the skewers.

One good thing about the sauce is that the flavour doesn't take over from the prawns because of it being quite weak tasting, I'd still like it to be hotter though and that's saying something because I'm not mad keen on mega spicey food!

I made a minty yogurt dip up to go with them but we didn't need it in the end because I only did it to cool the chilli down a bit and they don't need cooling down.

I'm still mega happy with them for 49p but no way would I pay £2.00 for them because it's only 16 prawns and even though they're plump they're not all that big so that's expensive.

Recommended.... sort of. They're nice but not worth the full price and the sauce was a bit disappointing for me!

        Good standby product.

My fiancé's Mum bought a selection of ready-prepared BBQ food from Tescos a few weeks ago, on the off chance that we might have some nice weather. She bought the Sweet Chilli Prawn Skewers, Salmon Burgers and Lamb Quarter Pounder Burgers With Mint. The great thing about these products is that they are kept in the freezer and can be cooked from frozen, so if the sun suddenly decides to put his hat on and come out to play, then you just need to light your coals and you're sorted.

        Well that's the idea anyway.

The day we decided to have a BBQ started out nice and sunny, but with the typical British weather being so changeable we ended up getting the umbrella out to protect us from the rain. If a downpour does stop your BBQ then you can always cook these in the oven.

These prawns were on special offer a few weeks ago, but they're now full price at £2 per box of 8 skewers. I'm always a bit dubious about ready-prepared food when it's so cheap, as I can't believe they can produce anything remotely decent at such a low cost. But these were surprisingly good.

They only take 14-16 minutes on the BBQ and for best results they should be cooked from frozen. I expected them to be dry and chewy, but the sweet chilli sauce keeps them moist and gives them a nice flavour. The chilli is extremely mild and I would have preferred them to have a bit more of a kick, but they were very enjoyable. You only get 2 prawns per skewer, but they are a decent size and with BBQs I always prefer to have a small amount of lots of different things as I like variety.

I'd recommend these as a good standby for the impromptu BBQ!
