Advantages: Great taste, firm meaty texture, Feezing process has not reduced the quality. On offer a lot.
Disadvantages: Expensive when not offer. Can sell out quickly when they are!
The prawns are from the Tesco Finest range, and can be found in the freezer section of Tesco. They are £5.00 for 200g (excluding the ice glaze). The prawns come cooked, shelled and ready to eat once they have been defrosted. These are farmed prawns, and they come from 'tropical waters' according to the Tesco. The ingredients are listed as prawns, water and salt - in that order.
Now, I've eat a lot of prawns, mainly on account of them being one of only several shellfish that I like, and these are the best ones I've tasted outside of a restaurant (and actually better than the quality of some I've eaten in restaurants!).
I''ve tried almost all of the king prawns available in supermarkets, frozen and fresh, with mixed results. I don't know if anyone else has experienced this but I've noticed that, unfortunately, a lot of prawns have a tendency to 'pop' in your mouth - the skin feels tight and when you bite into the prawn it just bursts - and the texture of the fish is rubbery. Urgh!!! I've eaten a lot like that and when I get one I am unable to finish the dish because I feel quite nauseous! I've never experienced this with these prawns which is partly I love them so much - because I'm confident that there are no nasty surprises lurking in my dinner.
These prawns are everything a king prawn should be - plump, firm, succulent and meaty with a delicate, sweet flavour. They are also a seriously good size and I can get a main course for two out of one bag no problem. I can feed three to four people if they are going to be used for a starter. Tesco states that to defrost, you should remove them from the freezer and defrost over a period of eight hours or so. I have to admit that, on occasion when I've been pushed for time, I've lobbed them from the freezer into a dish of warm water and they have defrosed in minutes. This hasn't been detrimental to the quality at all in my experience.
Although they are expensive Tesco usually has them on a half price offer three or four times a year, so I stock up then.
The bag contains two servings and the nutritional guidelines (per serving) on the packet are as follows:
Calories: 80kcal, 4% of your GDA
Sugar: 0.3g, 1% of your GDA
Fat: 0.9g, 1% of your GDA
Saturates: 0.3g, 2% of your GDA
Salt: 1g, 17% of your GDA
I've given this product four stars simply because of the cost, but if I were simply rating on the quality of the product then it would be a five.
Summary: They don't pop!
