I really like prawns and my husband is not a seafood fan. When browsing the fish section in Tesco's I was really pleased to see that they had litre individual pots of prawns in sauce for less than a pound. This has meant that my husband and I cans have slightly differing dinners without much effort at all. I can have a little tub of prawns with salad while my husband had chicken, simples!
I chose Tesco's Healthy Living Prawn Cocktail above the others available because I know that the sauce is generally packed of calories. This healthy living version is still not light in calories but it is a lot better than the standard prawn cocktails.
The prawns is this prawn cocktail are quite small sand there is quite a lot of seafood sauce in it. The sauce is not too overpowering in taste which for me is great as I do find it can be and I do tend to prefer blander food.
The pots themselves give the impression of you getting a really generus portion but when you open it up you mays get a bit disappointed as there are not many, just about enough for one sandwich. This quantity is fine for me but I dint tend to eat very big portions.
The sell buy date on fresh prawns tends to not be long, gerneralky just 2-3 days shelf life so it's good to bear this in mind whilst purchasing your prawns as I wouldn't tempt out of date prawns.
Tesco sent this with our online order this week as a substitute for some other prawn thing my mum had ordered, nobody else in the house fancied it so I had some in a pitta bread for my lunch today.
I'm not that impressed, the prawns are very small and not as meaty as they should be. The marie rose sauce is a lower fat one and it doesn't taste very nice, it's quite sweet and hasn't got a rich flavour at all. The strongest taste in my lunch was the pitta bread and that's not right! lol
Looking at the pack I don't think it's that LIGHT either because this 140g tub has got 16g fat in it and 210 calories and that's before you've even counted the pitta bread or whatever you're having it with!
There aren't that many prawns in the cocktail so I got loads of mouth fulls of pitta bread that had got just sauce in it, that's not good because like I said the sauce isn't very nice so it kind of spoilt my lunch. The sauce tastes to me like a weak flavoured ketchup and nothing like the sauce you usually get with prawns.
The cocktail is majorly boring and because of the prawns being so small you haven't even got much of a prawn taste in it and that means it's not a prawn cocktail at all!!! The sauce has got quite a nice texture and when you have it straight out of the fridge it's refreshing but with it being a light product it's the flavour that needs more work doing to it and even if I was dieting I could do better than this with prawns and a nicer sauce!
If you like it I reckon it would go nice on a jacket potato because like I said there's loads of sauce in the pot so it would make the potato nice and moist without you having to add butter.
I didn't like it at all though and thought it was the most boring prawn cocktail I've ever eaten.
Not recommended..... hardly any prawns, boring taste and not even low fat!
