      Advantages

      Disadvantages

      good whilst on offer

Recently Tesco have relaunched their healthy living range and through a testing panel called orchid i got sent vouchers to try the range.

      **Why this product?**
In the past ive tried quite a lot from this range and was frankly disappointed. A lot of products i looked at and thought yuk that tasted bogging whilst i felt neutral about this product. Also it says new so i am assuming enough of the recipe has been changed ,hopefully for the best.

      **Thoughts on product**
Portion size-It seems smaller than other ready meals but what was i expecting with something that only had 271 calories.
Taste/smell- The smell wasn't that strong. It didn't have an mmmm whats that cooking smell but it didn't smell bad either..Again it had an okay taste, the sweet chilli wasn't that strong, but the noodles tasted fine and there was enough bits of chicken throughout (these were tender not chewy)

      **Recommend**
These were very average tasting. Not bad not great. Sure pick it up if on offer but not as a "healthy living option" due to the sugar and salt contents being quite high. Its something i don't like about any healthy living product sure the fat contents low but other areas are higher.

      **Price/where to get**
THese are from Tesco if the name hasn't giving it away and are currently on a 3 for 2 offer

Not sure what it was but it tasted nothing like sweet chilli. The chicken didn't taste like it was derived from chicken either, despite copious amounts of pineapple in the "meal". It tasted like dishwater to me and after trying about 10 mouthfuls I binned it. Poor show Tesco!

        Advantages

        Disadvantages

        cheap and cheerful

This was a tasty dish for a light choice ready meal. It doesn't contain a lot of chicken, but that's the way I prefer it. The sauce tasted really sweet and there was quite a kick to it. It contained plenty of sauce so that the sweet chilli made the noodles full of flavour. Noodles are nice and soft.

Great for a lunchtime snack, but I can't say that it would fill me as an evening meal. Maybe it could then be bulked out with a little extra veg. At the end of the day, it is a light choice and only contains 440Kcal and 0.9g of saturated fat in a 400g box. Another good thing about this range is that it contains the 'points' value if you are following the Weight Watchers plan.

It is on special offer at the moment in Tesco for £1, I think it is normally £1.19, much cheaper than the weight Watchers meals. I will but it at full price.

It only takes 9 minutes to cook on full power in the microwave, so it won't take up too much of your lunch break!

To be found in the freezer department and is stored with all other light choice meals.

        Advantages

        Disadvantages

        Not delicious but nice enough

This ready meal can be found in the frozen section in Tesco, and is currently priced at £1.00. The reason I picked it up was not only the price, but that it looked like the type of quick and easy meal you can keep in the freezer for those evenings when you just can't be bothered!

        ~ ~ Packaging ~ ~

The meal comes in the usual plastic tray with film lid, enclosed in a cardboard box. I didn't feel it was particularly small like some other weight-watching choices. It was a white box with blue writing and an image of how the meal should look once cooked. I could see from the picture that the noodles looked quite thick and appetising and that's what made me put it in the trolley.

        ~ ~ Ingredients ~ ~

Cooked Noodles (32%), Water, Tomato Puree, Cooked Chicken Breast (10%), Sugar, Red Pepper, Red Wine Vinegar, Cornflour, Vegetable Oil, Honey, Chicken Stock, Garlic Puree, Salt, Ginger Puree, Chilli Flakes, White Pepper.

        ~ ~ Nutritional values ~ ~

        Each pack contains:

        Calories - 445
        Sugar - 17.1g
        Fat - 6.7g
        Saturates - 0.9g
        Salt - 2g

        ~ ~ Cooking Instructions ~ ~

This meal should always be cooked from frozen, and you can either cook it in the oven for 35 mins at 200 C/400 F/Gas Mark 6, or you can microwave it for about 10 minutes, stirring halfway through. I always cook ready meals in the microwave as, in my opinion, that's what they're designed for. If I have to wait longer than half an hour for my food, then I may as well cook it from scratch!

        ~ ~ My Opinion ~ ~

You wouldn't get too dissimilar a result if you just mixed a few small pieces of poor quality chicken and pieces of red pepper/chilli in with a tin of spaghetti and sweet & sour sauce. The noodles were exactly like tinned spaghetti, except they weren't chopped up as much, and the chicken had the usual watery, bland flavour to it that you find with most of the Light Choices meals that include chicken. However, due to the fact that the sweet and sour flavour dominates the meal, with the odd mouthful containing a good kick from the chilli flakes, it doesn't matter too much that the chicken isn't that great.

I was also surprised at how much sauce there was. Most ready meals don't contain enough sauce, and you are left with too much dry rice or pasta on your plate. But the balance was just right with this one.

I actually really enjoyed the meal, and felt full for several hours after eating it, although it didn't at all feel as though I had eaten something that was particularly good for me. It may contain very little fat, but the amount of calories it contains is actually higher than a lot of normal ready meals, so the packaging is quite deceptive.

I would definitely buy it again though, as it is great to keep in the freezer for when all I want is some quick, simple, comfort food for these cold, wintery nights.

          Advantages

          Disadvantages

          .

I don't buy a lot of frozen meals from Tesco, as I don't find their range that exciting. I much prefer Asda, but this caught my eye the other week and I decided it would be good for tea. Being back on my diet again I scanned the nutritional information, found it would be suitable and ended up buying it.

It cost £1 for the 400g meal. Often Tesco has a 5 meals for £4 on a large-ish range of their £1 meals, but I only wanted the 1 thing.

As I mentioned this was found in the Freezer section. The meal was in a black plastic tray covered in a film lid. The lot was in a cardboard box. The box was alright. It was mostly blue in colour and has the pretty picture of the meal on the front.

Per pack this has 455 calories and 6.2g fat. Certainly alright on the fat front, but I normally aim for 380-400 for my evening meal. Hey, what's 60 calories in the grand scheme of things?

I always cook frozen meals in the Microwave and this took 9 minutes on my 800 watt micro. There is cooking instructions on the back for other wattages, or if you want to heat in the oven. I can't be bothered with oven cooking, as this is a quick meal, so why wait any longer?

Now to the meal. I liked this and will buy it again. There was a good amount of Noodles and the Sauce that was covering the Noodles had a nice tangy, sweet and spicy taste to it. You could taste the Garlic and Chilli flavours in this and it was a light red colour. There was some Vegetables, mostly Carrots and Peppers and the Chicken Breast mixed through as well. There was't a huge amount of Chicken in this, but I wasn't expecting loads due to the price.

A nice meal that should fill the hole, and since it is a healthy choice meal with the Noodles and Chicken then you will think it is really good for you.

            Advantages

            Disadvantages

            Don't buy it!

Well, I have tried a few Tesco 'ready' type meals including the ones in the Light choice range. The other day whilst looking through the freezer isle (starving hungry) I saw these meals. I already fancied a chinese and after seeing these 'Light Choices' ready chinese meals that were at just a snip at the price and much healthier, I thought go on! I picked up 2 as they were on an offer, the sweet chilli chicken and noddles and the sweet chicken chilli with rice.

When I got home I simply popped it in the oven whilst unpacking the rest of my shopping. I think that I had to put it in for 15 minutes and then remove, stir then pop back in for a further 20 minutes.

The price and where to buy:
I bought 2 as they were on offer, the offer was 2 for £5.25, or they will put you back £2.69-£3.69 each! I purchased them from Tescos as it is Tescos own meal.

When I first opened the box I was met my two sides in a black tray dish, one side had the rice in it which was all frozen together in a solid clump. On the other side thec chicken with sweet chilli sauce was in it. It was frozen over at the topand didn't really look to appetising, I pierced the film lid as it said on the box and put it in the oven!

After 15 minutes I removed it from the oven and removed the film lid, I was surprised to see that the rice hadn't really budged and was still in a massive frozen clump. At this point I was wondering whether you were meant to defrost first, but upon checking I had done everything correctly. Looking over at the chicken with sweet chilli sauce the chilli sauce had kind of seperated into a watery mess, with a layer of thick gloopy red stuff at the bottom and a watery layer on top. The chicken still had a frozen sort of seal over the top so I really didn't fancy it after this! However I stirred it and popped it back into the oven!

Once the time was up , I removed from the oven and the meal had sort of 'corrected' itself. The chicken chilll side actually looked edible and the rice side seemed to have defrosted. I popped it all in a bowl and began to eat. I wish I didn't though!!!!

The rice was mushy and sooo flavourless, words can not descibe, it was absoloutley vile! It had a fluffy texture on top, that sort of had bits hanging off and the middle had more of a texture to it, but was still very mushy!

The sweet chilli sauce was so diluted and watery, although it looked thick and tasty it was horrible. I'll give it that it wasn't completly flavourless, but the flavour it did have wasn't the nicest and left a horrible after taste in your mouth! The sauce had little bits which looked like chilli in it, however there was no chilli taste to, neither was there any 'kick' to it, so these lumpy bits in your mouth, were, well, just lumpy bits! It also tasted of carrots which made me feel a little sick and all in all I hated the sauce!

The chicken was ok. That it is all, nothing special, just normal lumps of chicken stuck in with a vile sauce and mushy, tasteless, horrible rice! The chicken was also very gristly, and was not the tender chicken I was expecting! It was very stringy, which I know is sort of expected in chicken but it was so stringy and tough it was barely edible!

I had about 2 mouthfulls (if that) and the rest went in the bin (not to the dog, to the bin, I think even the dog would turn up his nose to this!) I ended up eating a cornish pasty for tea and thoroughly enjoyed it!

            Conclusion:
I would NEVER, not EVER reccomend this to someone (unless it was someone I hate intensley - and even then is seems mean!) It is THE worst meal, not one of the worst, but the ABSOLOUTE worst I have ever tasted. I shall never buy this again.

The best part of this was how it looked on the photo of the box, everything beyond there went down hill until it hit the very bottom! If you are looking for a cheap chinese, I'd reccomend you just order fewer dishes from your local takeaway or make one yourself!

            In conclusion don't buy it!
            EVER!
It was the biggest waste of money I've ever spent in my life and I would never buy it even if it was the last thing in the world!

I think you get the idea?

              Advantages

              Disadvantages

              Try it as a treat

Whilst trying to be a little healthier a few months ago yet live on ready meals at the same time I came across Tesco Light Choices Sweet Chilli Chicken & Noodles. I decided to try it because I really like chicken and the whole meal sounded delicious. I normally find that Tesco's products are quite good quality although their ready meals seem to lack taste. This was from a new range though; the Tesco Light Choices to try and help people be healthier, I think they probably only bought out this range because the government has become a lot stricter about ready meal quality and health levels lately.

Anyway it comes in a box of about 400g which was on offer at 5 for £4 so I stocked up on these and a few others from the light choices range. The box is white and has a picture of the meal that's contained inside plus the words Light Choices in the top left hand corner in pale blue writing. On the back are the ingredients, nutritional information and cooking instructions. Inside the box the meal comes in a black plastic tray with some clear plastic over the top to keep it fresh.

              Ingredients:
Water, Cooked Noodles 32%, Tomato Puree, Cooked Chicken Breast 10%, Red Pepper, Sugar, Cornflour, Red Wine Vinegar, Vegetable Oil, Honey, Chicken Stock, Garlic Puree, Salt, Ginger Puree, Chilli Flakes and White Pepper.

              This meal contains:

              455 Calories (23% GDA)
              19.0g of Sugar (21% GDA)
              6.2g of Fat (9% GDA)
0.9g of Saturated Fat (5% GDA)
              2g of Salt (33% GDA)

As you can see these are really not very good for you and I wouldn't consider them to be a light choice. In fact I now eat these as a treat not a dieting meal because they contain loads of everything except for saturated fat.

              Cooking instructions:
Remove from the box but leave in the tray with the plastic over the top, just piece it a couple of times with a fork
Place in the oven for 40-45 minutes
              OR
Place in the microwave and cook on full power for 11 minutes

I cooked it in the microwave as I find that ready meals cook a lot better that way, plus it's quicker.

It started to smell quite nice as it was cooking, I could smell the noodles and the sweet and sour sauce. It tasted really nice too. The noodles could have been thicker but they still tasted quite nice. There was plenty of sauce on it and it did taste really good, not quite as sweet and sour as it could have been but you could still tell what it was. There were also large amounts of chicken in chunks about 2cms long on the top. They are delicious and covered in sauce to enhance their taste. There are also peppers dotted throughout the food, I think there should have been more of them as there were hardly any there but they still added to the taste nicely.

Overall I give this a 7 out of 10 because although it's really tasty it does need more peppers and is really unhealthy.

              Advantages

              Disadvantages

Unsatisfying and certainly not a healthy choice!

Trying to get back on the straight and narrow again with my eating habits after over indulging throughout the festive season, I thought I would take Tesco up on their offer of 5 for £4 on their new Healthy Choices Ready Meals Range. I don't normally buy ready-made meals as I never find them very satisfying and usually feel they are a bit overpriced, but at the normal price of 99p each or 5 for £4 I thought I would give them a try.

The first one I tried was the Tesco Healthy Choices Sweet Chilli Chicken. Sounds good, so let's see what I found.

              ==Packaging==

Packaged in the usual black plastic carton with film lid and cardboard sleeve outer. The cardboard sleeve has all the information required printed on the outside with quite a tasty looking photo of the product on the top.

              ==Ingredients==

Water, Cooked Noodles 32%, Tomato Puree, Cooked Chicken Breast 10%, Red Pepper, Sugar, Cornflour, Red Wine Vinegar, Vegetable Oil, Honey, Chicken Stock, Garlic Puree, Salt, Ginger Puree, Chilli Flakes and White Pepper.

              ==Nutritional Values==

Calories - 455 (23% of guideline daily amount)
Sugar - 19.0g (21% of guideline daily amount)
Fat - 6.2g (9% of guideline daily amount)
Saturates - 0.9g (5% of guideline daily amount)
Salt - 2g (33% of guideline daily amount)

              ==My Experience==

This product can either be cooked in the oven, which takes approximately 40 - 45 minutes or in the microwave, which takes between 10 ½ - 12 ½ minutes depending on the wattage of your microwave. I chose the microwave method as I was starving! When I took the meal from the cardboard sleeve to pierce the film lid I wasn't very impressed with what I saw in the carton, but hey, it was still frozen so surely it would look better once cooked. Into the microwave it went, half way through I stopped the microwave to give the meal a little stir but I still wasn't very impressed. After the full time, out came my meal and straight on to my plate. There was lots and lots of sauce and a fair bit of noodles, but where's the chicken? And where's the veg? I counted 6 tiny pieces of chicken and there were tiny little red square things, which I take it were the red peppers! The sauce was quite nice, slightly spicy, but the noodles were soggy and there was so little chicken and veg I didn't really taste them at all. On finishing my "healthy" meal, I felt bloated and hungry. I would definitely not recommend this to anyone. I don't understand how Tesco can call this a Healthy Choice, the calories were high for what you got, the sugar content was high and so was the salt content and I even feel the fat content was fairly high. I didn't feel there was anything nutritious in this meal at all.

              ==My Overall Opinion==

I will be sticking to my old ways of cooking a meal from scratch, filled with plenty veg and other nutritional ingredients. I will definitely not be buying these again, although I do still have 4 more in my freezer to eat!! ARGHH!!
