WH Smith

W H Smith Guernsey is shocking, I'm not sure how it compares to other W H Smith shops but the stop is tiny with books often stacked all over the floor around christmas, it's stationary is really overpriced and although it has some goos deals on books it's usually books which have either been out a long time or buy 1 get one half price, ... the staff don't know much asked if they sold Laminating Pouches and they had no idea what they were...after looking around they did sell them.
However W H Smith Guernsey is ok for magazines but nothing else..it's 85p for a small dairy milk bar they also make reductions on items which look good but when you look around the reduced price is often the retail price or higher for example for a reem of paper it's £7.99...they did a sale on it to £3.99 after going up the road i found a reem of paper to be £3.49 normal price! Book People, the
by loopcinda
I first discovered the book people about 5 years ago when they came to my office. I could not believe how cheap the books were - often around 75% off the RRP.
If they come to your place of work they alway have a good selection of books, both for children and adults. Importantly, they also take credit cards even when out on the road, ... so you don't need to have a lot of spare cash on you.
The book people's website is excellent. You can filter the books in a variety of ways to help you track down the publication you are after.
The selection of children's books is always excellent and it's a great site to visit if you are looking for gift inspiration. For very young children you can currently get great value Night Garden, Peppa Pig and Ben & Holly books.
They also do a good selection of children's activity books, worth looking at if you are after school holiday entertainment.
The adult section is large and varied, you will find lots of fiction, biographies, cookery books and reference books - basically all the kinds of things you'd expect to find in a decent book shop. The books they sell are constantly updated, but be warned that if you spot a bargain book you should snap it up - I've dithered in the past and gone back a few days later to find them all sold out.
If your order comes to over £25 then delivery is free, below this and the standard charge is £3.95, which is a little pricey if you only want a couple of books. However, you can virtually always find a free delivery code if you do a quick online search and in 5 years I've not yet once had to pay for delivery.
Delivery times are always good and all of my orders have arrived in 3 - 5 working days.
This is a great book site and well worth adding to your favourites. Read the complete review |

WH Smith

Having just had a branch of WHSmith open relatively nearby, I am now a regular browser / shopper at the well known stationary chain. WHS has always been known as a book / stationary store, but they now sell a greater product range than ever before.
Walking into my local store, I am now greeted by a large pick and mix ... selection. Presumably the demise of Woolworths prompted WHS to corner the pick and mix market also. There is also a large card selection & newspaper stands (the main reason for popping in more frequently for me).
There is a full range of stationary available, books covering all genre's, a small selection of toys & games, & a limited selection of software & DVD's.
Prices at WHS can tend to be on the expensive side, & most of the time you will find products more competitively priced elsewhere. However, they seem to have better offers than ever before, & there are definite bargains to be had on the odd item here & there. Book offers vary occasionally, with childrens books having been on buy one get one half price recently. There are good book offers located near the tills, usually stacked on tables & covering mainly genres such as cookery/reference etc. There are usually plenty of confectionary offers around the store (particularly at the checkout), but I realise now that the items on offer are usually marked down due to being close to their sell by date. Not a problem with me, & many items are half price or less, making for a good impulse buy.
The store is well laid out, but can often be a bit cramped down some aisles, depending on the amount of stock piled around the corners. Service is always friendly & efficient.
Overall, a useful store for me for newspapers & the like, but cheaper stationary/books available elsewhere. Read the complete review |
