I joined this book club when I first bought my house and felt like I needed some interesting books to put on the shelf so that visitors wouldn't just come in the door and see all our mystery/thriller/crime/horror books. I wanted people to think we were educated and intelligent. (If that is not the best reason to join a book club then what is?). To put you in the picture, my mum has been a member of World Books for over twenty years and because of that I knew how a book club worked and how reliable they usually were. This is one of the better targeted book clubs currently in existence, if a little over ambitious - it does attempt to cover all but the last 500 years of human history after all! After joining, you receive a catalogue each month. Your only committment is to buy three books in the first year, after which time you can keep taking the catalogue with no conditions, which is my prefered method - I'm well past my compulsary purchases, but am still going. The range of books on offer is good, including good popular works and some very academic volumes. There is also a 'bookshelf' page with standard references.
