Advantages: Some terrific deals, especially on kids books

Disadvantages: Average customer service

I'm a book junkie. I just can't walk past a bookstore without going in. And more often than not, I'm tempted to buy something. The result is that my shelves at home are stacked with literally tens of thousands of books.

If you're a bit of a bookworm like me, you'll be ecstatic at finding The Book People. However - beware - you may also need to buy yourself a few new bookcases to hold your purchases after visiting their website!

The most obvious advantage is the cost. At thebookpeople, you can buy books at massive discounts off high street prices. They have an extremely strong range of kids' books, making this a great place to shop for your younger relations at Christmas! For adults, there are plenty of cookery books, gardening books, coffee table classics and even a smattering of fiction (though if you're an avid reader of "classic" literature - Dickens, Austen, etc. you're unlikely to find much off the beaten track here).

To give you some idea of the bargains I got: I picked up five 'Charlie and Lola' books with CDs for just over a fiver (RRP £45), seven Usborne puzzle books for £6.99 (RRP £60), a lovely Hairy Mclairy set in a special bag for £6.99 (RRP £55), a history of gardening for £1.99 (RRP £16), a Leith's baking bible for £10 (normal cost £30) and ten James Bond books for £10 in a slipcase.

The disadvantages: The site is a bit basic, and searching isn't very easy. Delivery can be slow - I ordered in early December, and it took them 2 weeks to get me my order. They also use one of those idiot couriers who leaves brown cardboard parcels out in the rain to disintegrate into a soggy mess by the time you get home (though strictly speaking, this isn't their fault). If you need to ring them, you may find yourself on hold for a very long time before you can speak to an advisor (I had to wait 20 minutes which didn't amuse me). So there's definitely some work for them to do on their procedures and processes. But at this price, you can put up with a little inconvenience.

Summary: Cheap, and great for Christmas gifts!
