Advantages: houses the usuals

Disadvantages: no independent book stores

Books in Blackpool you ask? Well, considering the IQ of the average Blackpool resident I doubt books are at the top of most people shopping lists. However, there are a number of decent shops to accommodate your average book worm if they do ever end up in the town.

First off theres the usuals, Waterstones and WHSmith, both within 500 yards of each other on the pedestrianised Bank Hey St. Although the waterstones isnt necessarily large, its more than sufficent, with 2 floors what can only be described as an extension at the back. The staff always seem to be friendly and helpful at this store aswell. Price wise, these 2 stores could be a little on deer side, but they will provide all the latest books. For a cheaper alternative, head to 'The Works' on Church Street (which is also pedestrianised). Here most of the books arent recent releases, but occasionally you do find books which were only released 2 or 3 months ago. For example I found U2 By U2 for £5 in this store, 2 months after buying it in HMV for £20.

These 3 stores serve as the only book focused stores, although HMV and woolworths do both also provide some. The other alternatives are charity shops, which all sell books for a pound or less. Around 20 charity shops can be found in blackpool.

Summary: tips for your average book worm on how to survive in the resort

ps. Having followed up, my local contact in Blackpool tells me the shop seems to be currently closed, but possibly only for refurbishment. A great pity if it turns out to be permanent.

Isn't there rather a good second-hand bookshop on the Talbot Road on the left as you head out of the middle of town? Or have I mis-remembered?
