Now as with most Towns they have The Works which is in Long Wyre Street this is a great book shop that covers all types of reading from cookbooks, decorating, rude joke books and how to play an assortment of instruments ect. It has the usual autobiographies that don't seem to have been published that long ago for a very good price compared to the usual well known bookshops. Next you will find WH Smith in Culver Walk with the usual magazines, pens, pencils ect.This has a slightly bigger selection of books than the Works, but then again the prices are usually much more expensive unless like at the moment they are doing a Xmas... more |

I used to go to Colchester on a fairly regular basis, but with the recession really kicking in it seems to have closed a lot of the shops down, as well (I have ranted on about this before I know!) as the price of parking your car is absolutely unbelievable. With the price of petrol and parking I feel that a lot of people in the Essex area tend to shop at the outlets like Lakeside and Freeport as the parking is free all day long for as long as you want. Now the only shops that seem to not be to affected by the costs are the Bookshops as they have all remained alive and kicking ( I'm surprised that the internet hasn't shut some of the more smaller ... I lived in Colchester for about twelve years and on the whole, shopping is very good but for one thing...books! There are a few smaller book shops which cover the usual but on the whole the selection is not very good at all. I am in to computer literature (sado, I hear you cry!) and I find it increasingly difficult to buy them. I went to America last summer and I went to a book shop there. It was amazing, it had a whole floor of computer books and every other book you can think of. The prices as well were thesame amount in dollars as they were in pounds.
