Chester has a few shops for those with musical interests. On the main street you have Zavvi (the old Virgin Megastore) and just a couple of doors down you have HMV. Both of these stock the obvious items and cater for most people but seem to have shifted their focus away from music and towards DVD's, moving most of their music stock upstairs. If your looking for something reasonably mainstream then these 2 stores should see you through. For more obscure and hard to find items head little out of town and go into Grey and Pink on Brook Street. This small independent retailler has a great collection of vinyls and CD's as well as old magazines, programmes and other promotional items. You may find yourself lost in this place for hours on end digging through the vinyls - as I have many a time. The amazing range of music of every genre may overface some but do not be put off. The chaps who work here seem to know everything there is to know about all types of music and are only too happy to point you in the right direction. After visiting a couple of times and chatting about my musical taste the guys started to put things to one side that have interested me and I've picked up some great finds. Pay them a visit, you won't be disappointed.
There are a few music shops in Chester. Virgin megastores is on the main highstreet which is fairly cheap and has a lot of choice and the chester store is big and on two levels so the choice is fairly large. Also on the main street is HMV< this is much the same as virgin, infact i don't really know why they have both, but they do....and i suppose you can compare prices and get the best deal... Woolworths which is fairly new is also on the main street and this seels a variety of cds, but not a great choice and i wouldn't really call it a music store, but it does sell cds... There is a music shop that i have forgotton the name of which sells instruments and music books on the road of the townhall, on the same road, but opposite the second macdonalds (the one in the shopping mall bit with TJ hughes in it)This is the only musical instrument shop in the town centre to my knowledge as i think they closed the other one down.... Chester used to have Dawsons which sold music books and instruments, but i think it moved or shut down, there is a music shop under the bridge, next to habitat, but i heard that had closed down too, although it may not have done so you may be lucky, but basically the best music shops for buying music in chester are HMV and virgin, but they are big stores and do have a good choice of music, you shouldn't have a problem in getting what you are looking for in either of those stores.
