The out-of-town supermarkets also stock chart releases, but they’re only there to tempt people doing their groceries, not worth a special trip for music. Burtons on the High Street also has (quite bizarrely) a small number of mainstream dance compilations that are often almost ridiculously cheap (£6 for double CD). Although when I’m at university (in Oxford) I find it immensely satisfying to have both a large Virgin megastore and HMV just out back of college and practically opposite each other, I still look forward to coming home (Colchester) for the CD shopping. Of course, the best of both worlds is being able to browse through two lots of sales for bargain CDs, but here I just want to set out what’s special about Colchester.
