Advantages: Convenient, inexpensive, good selection of titles

Disadvantages: Have to send the form back every month

The Softback Preview is exactly what I want from a book club. The range of titles is extensive and by no means guilty of the sort of 'dumbing down' found in certain other clubs. The majority of the books on offer are non-fiction, and include a good combination of history, science and reference books. I have bought more history books from TSP than I have from the History Guild because the range is better! Another plus point is that once you've joined, you don't have to buy a certain number of books in the year - you don't have to buy any at all, in fact.
Being paperback editions, the books are not too expensive. Perhaps this would be a disadvantage if you wanted high-brow-looking tomes to sit beautifully on a shelf, but if you're actually going to read them, a paperback is cheaper and often more convenient.
A downside for some people is that you have to send the order form back every month whether you want anything or not, and mark that you DON'T want the editor's choice, or you will get sent it anyway. This can be a bit of a nuisance but TSP doesn't differ from other clubs in this way and you just have to get your act together and remember to do it!
The numerous adverts for TSP might make you suspicious that there is a catch, but I think it is a very good way to find out about new titles and buy them at discounted rates.
