Advantages: Good selection - good prices - good service.

Disadvantages: running out of room for my books

I was always a bit wary of joining a book club because you hear so many stories of people having problems with duplicate orders, receiving goods they didn't order and being unable to cancel subscriptions.

But my sister had been a member of the Softback preview for around six months without any problems, so when I saw an advertisement in a newspaper for a limited period offer of five books -some for as little as 50p- I decided to try them.

I received my books and my membership in a relatively short time, about a week, I think. Every month you are sent a pamphlet and some leaflets with titles that are currentlt on offer. There is also a book of the month , but you don't need to purchase it, in fact you don't need to buy anything.
Once you've paid for your special offer books you don't need to buy any ever again.

They send you a minimum of six issues of the preview(pamphlet)and you can cancel anytime after the sixth issue you receive. All you need to do with the first six issues is fill in the form saying you don't want the book of the month, and that is all.

The discounts can be anything up to 50% off a title and they do have specials from time to time, but most books are sold at about 20-25% below rrp.Ordering is simple- as it is a pre printed form ,and all you have to do is fill in a code which you find beside every title in the preview.

Delivery is pretty quick, normally within a week or ten days, but sometimes quicker.

You can pay by cheque, postal order, credit or debit cards.
You do not pay anything until your order arrives and then you have ten days to pay your account. They have books for everyone. New releases, fiction,History, writing,
Classic literature, cookery, crafts, reference, childrens ,you name it they do it.

The books are all softback, but they are not obscure titles ,by authors who you will not have heard of. They are books that are available in good high street
bookstores.

They have recently gone on line at www.eTSP.co.uk (the caps are not a typo) You can browse place orders and view your order and account status, which is really handy. -so it might be a good idea to have a look and see what they have to offer.

I'm really pleased with the service. I've been a member now for a year and had no problems at all. The only problem I have is making up my mind which books to choose from the selection on offer. I don't know about any other book clubs, but the TSP provides good service and value and is worth checking out.

Another ex-user here. Certainly a good service, and the "no obligation" stance is a good one. Bit of a bind having to remember to return the "no thankyou" slip each month. May be the new web site will make it easier.

I bought several science books, but the fiction list seemed fairly limited.

I also found them very good when I was a member, but, like thanatoszane, I quickly bought them out.

I joined them about two ago, stayed for a year and a half, then left because I'd bought them out! They don't seem to change their books very often, so there wasn't that many to interest me. They are great value, though, and they never sent me a book I didn't want.
