Video Game Shops in Durham
by durham_girl In the last few years Durham has seen a big increase in the number of video game shops located within a small distance from each other. We have Game in the Prince Bishops Shopping Centre, Gamestation in Silver Street and Grainger Games in North Road. Not to mention Argos, Woolworths, HMV, WH Smith who all sell video games ... aswell. Now, I hear you say 'That's not a great amount of video game shops'. BUT the thing you have to remember is that you can get from one side of Durham City Centre to the other in 10 minutes. On Foot. Yep, we're a tiny place and as such there is always lots of choice to be had when buying a video game. I find that Grainger Games is normally the cheapest option. They are a North East Games Shop, with 190 outlets all over the North East. They started in 1997 buying and selling pre owned games from a market stall in the Grainger Arcade in Newcastle. While their stores are located in the North East only, they do have a website where you can buy new an pre owned games. www.graingergames.co.uk I have also found that they offer good prices on trade ins, and as the pre owned games are cheaper than other shops anyway, it becomes a very good deal. In summary, having so many video game shops in Durham works to my advantage. I shop around, get the best deal, and when the game has been finished I trade it in, again for the best price. Video Game Shops in Blackpool
by jac22 This review is short, but it does what it says on the tin, I can't possibly write an essay about the subject! There are 3 main video games stores in Blackpool, as well as other shops which do sell them. 1. Game. The high street games-store as found in most shopping areas can also be found within the ... Houndshill Centre of Blackpool. Staff are usually friendly types here, not the sort of geeks you tend to get in Games Stores. There are 4-5 demo games you can play, however these are usually taken up by 6 year olds who can barely reach the controller. If you're sad enough to care about playing on a game in store I don't know what to suggest other than just getting their early- or offering sweets to child as bribery. To be honest I wouldn't suggest you do either. The store is well lit, with 2 or 3 crates filled with old, used games all going for as little as £2. It's possible to trade in your games here, however you will probably not get as much as you can from Eclipse. For example, the game Fifa 2007 would get you £5 here at Game, where as at Eclipse you could get up to £8. 2. Gamestation. Another high street chain of games store found within Blackpool is Gamestation, on the alleyway like Corporation Street. The shop here is very small, and badly lit, not too dissimilar to a teenager's bedroom. It's also very crowded with all the things they fill it up with, and the amount of people who visit it. Similar to Game there are 2-3 demo games available to play, but you're more likely to find a geeky 13 year old playing on here, rather than a 6 year old as with Game. To prize these sorts off them you could offer them a free pen or something. Price wise it's probably the highest, and there are fewer older games going on the cheap here. Not the best. 3. Eclipse An independent store (now has branches in Clevelys, Preston) is 'Eclipse Home Entertainment' found on Beech Avenue near Stanley Park (about 2 miles from the town centre). The store is fantastic for old games with its large selection of traded in games, all going for low prices. The staff are also better here, usually older (30+). This tends to make them better at serving the customer, and more helpful. Another upside to this store is that its usually very quiet, with no more than 3 people in it at a time. This combined with the fact its quite a large store means you can glide around easily enough. My Tip- Eclipse! Its new games may be a little expensive but there more than made up for with the older games which are always cheap. The shopping experience is second to none, with good staff, a large (ish) store, and the fact its never busy. Go there if you need some computer love. Read the complete review |

Video Games in Chester
by Del_Boy GAME **** Situated on Foregate Street next door to HMV and Dixons. A few shops away from Virgin also. GAME is the shop that I frequent most; the selection of games that they sell is good. The prices are also exemplary in my opinion. If for some reason they are selling a game more expensive than another shop ... they will price match without quibble. Where GAME also gets a lot of praise from me is in the customer service department. The sales assistants all seem very knowledgeable about the products that they are helping to sell. They are also very honest. I am usually hyper critical of all staff that work in shops such as this, so when I give praise it has to be earned and deserved. I will explain why I think they are honest: Once upon a time a year and a half back, I was in the market for getting online and onto the Internet. First port of call was at PCWorld… I know I asked what I got for. The assistant was rude, knew nothing about what he was selling and was only concerned in getting me to buy the most expensive modem that they had on offer. The sales assistants reasoning for this was that as it was expensive it was bound to be better. Not the type of reasoning I would expect from a sales assistant I am afraid. In sharp contrast I then went into GAME. I picked up a Modem costing £69.99 the Sales Assistant told me that it would be better to buy the one that had exactly the same specifications for £49.99. You may think that as a result the shop lost £20, well not quite. You see because of this shop assistants honesty I then went onto becoming a regular customer, purchasing many games from there. A rewarding shopping experience will yield far more repeated custom, than an unrewarding one. – Take note ‘The Dixons Group’ Also of note is that GAME operates a reward card policy whereby you can purchase a card for an outlay of a couple of pounds. This entails you to discounts on a wide range of products. When you buy products you can also earn points. So far I have made quite a bit of money in vouchers through this scheme. For the following reasons I recommend GAME in Chester, as the best game shop that is in Chester. Returns policy for game is also commendable. They will exchange or refund money on any purchase as long as it is returned within 10 days in its original condition. They also offer a part exchange scheme, for example take in your old games for a discount on newer ones. This only applies to console games though and not for PC ones. Disclaimer: I don’t work for GAME nor have I ever. Nor do I have any relations or friends that work there. 10/10 Virgin Megastore **************** A decent shop that not only sells a wide variety of music at reasonable prices, but also sells computer games. By and large Virgin isn’t as good as GAME for buying computer games. This is not always the case though. Virgin often have special promotions and offers that run. These promotions are typically 2 for the price of 1 on selected computer games. An example of the above is that I purchased the games Serious Sam and Undying; both were selling at £29.99 each at the time. I got them for £29.99 for both. Returns policy: Will generally offer refunds or exchanges provided goods are bought back within a reasonable time period (usually less than 1 week). 8/10 HMV *** HMV is similar to Virgin in almost every aspect. I would say that HMV shouldn’t be dismissed as a viable place to purchase games. They often run offers, at the moment they are running a 3 for £20 offer on a wide variety of budget titles. Returns policy: Same as for the Virgin Megastore. 8/10 WHSmith ******* I wouldn’t recommend WHSmith for games purchases. Games often sell at full RRP and the selection isn’t the most recent or up to date. Though it is worth checking out on the off chance, usually has older games in that other shops have long since sold. 3/10 MVC *** Similar to WHSmith in many ways. Worth checking out though if you wish to buy a game. For example a few days back they had the game Sacrifice for sale which is available for around £19.99 in most other shops for £7. Not the best choice for games with only a small selection but well worth checking out. With an MVC card you will often be able to purchase newer titles for £1 or so cheaper than other outlets. Though remember GAME will price match anyway. 5/10 Games store at the front of the Chester Market ***************************************** For purchases of 2nd hand Playstation/N64/Dreamcast/Saturn/+ other games and accessories. Not the best selection, nor the most comprehensive. Worth checking out though if you have a Playstation or older system though, as he has games in stock for them usually. As they are 2nd hand they are invariably cheaper than in the shops. 5/10 There are a few other shops in Chester though by and large these other ones, Dixons and Our Price are not worth bothering with as they seldom have decent selections of games in or special offers on. I hope that this opinion is of some use to you if you ever decide to come shopping in Chester. Kev Read the complete review |
