Advantages: Still a great choice of magazines
Disadvantages: Pile 'em high sell it cheap philosophy
What has happened to WH Smith?
Over recent times there has been such a downward spiral in the choice and quality of stock held in this chain of shops that it has made me reduce how often I visit.
In past times, WH Smith was a stalwart of the high street - purveyor of fine stationary, excellent choice of books, loads of games and DVD's etc. In fact, if I ever had to purchase one of these such items, WH Smith would have been my venue of choice,
Not so these days, now they seem to be focussed on the cheaper end of the market with eternal sales and what would appear to be bulk purchases of unheard of books to shift. The layout of the stores has also gone downhill - with an apparent pile it high sell it cheap aspect creeping in more and more.
Alright, you can still buy your daily paper and magazine there - in fact the vast choice of magazines is one of the few remaining plus points of the store, is this because they are sale or return I wonder? - but that it likely to be all most people buy.
Come on Smith's please return to your glory days! We know it is hard in today's economic climate but your loyal customers are disappointed.
Summary: Bring back the good old days of quality stock and good looking stores!

- 27/09/09 You are SO right! I guess they have weakened their status in my eyes by trying to match their competitors, instead of continuing to shine as a leading light in the market.
Be good if they took on board what you are saying. |
