Advantages: none at all

Disadvantages: apalling customer service, lost letters, and unwanted, unordered books

Like most other people here, I was taken in my the incredibly low introductory offer. However, a month later I was sent 2 books which I had not ordered. Worldbooks agreed to send me a return postage label, so I wouldn't incur any charges myself on returning the books. 6 months later, the label finally arrived, so I packed up the books and returned them. Worldbooks then apparently couldn't trace my return, and I am now in a bit of a situation where I say I've returned them, and they say I haven't.

I have also ordered 5 further books to meet my miminim membership requirment, and have been told that these cannot be delivered until I have paid for my account to be cancelled. The reason my account has been cancelled is apparently because I have not bought sufficient books within the first year of membership. The fact that I have had these books on order since November 2004 does not seem to register with Worldbook. Worldbooks have refused to send me the books I ordered, due to an outstanding balance on my account - the unwanted books which I have already returned.

I'm in a bit of a sticky situation at the moment, and am tempted to just pay the £65 they say I owe them for books not returned, just to get them out of my life!

If you are considering joining Worldbooks, all I can say is, the introductory offer is great, but be prepared for shockingly bad customer service, letters being lost or ignored, uncontactable customer helplines, and general shoddy business practices.

Summary: Apalling - simply stay well away from this company

I have an account with this lot as well. You're right in that their customer services are bad. I've bought well over my 'agreed' of number books for the first 12 months, have cancelled my subs, then I got a letter inviting me to join world books, and then further statements with nil balance but which I had to make sure I returned so I didn't get the editor's choice. Total chaos! Impossible to speak to a human being on the phone, absolutely no choices via the automatated service other than to pay for your books or arrange a return of books at a cost of £3(which you didn't order in the first place)! Strongly worded letters get no response whatsoever. After you sign up for the 1p books, the choice of books in the catalogue is usually pretty dire. I've usually read them all at the library or bought them as paperbacks a lot cheaper!
