Advantages: None that I can see
Disadvantages: Oh where do I begin????!!!!????
Im a real book worm and am a member of several book clubs, here I am writing about one such book club - World Books.
The offer I recieved from world books came via a telephone call from one of their representatives, I was offered a free book plus £40 of book vouchers to spend in the club magazine, I was happy to take up this offer, it sounded brilliant, I should have known it was too good to be true though shouldnt I !!
A few months after my subscription started I recieved some books that i had not ordered, I called and requested that the books be collected because i had not ordered them, I was told they were the managers selection and that I would recieve them each month unless I specifically asked not to ( thing is how can I requst that I dont recieve something I never knew was coming? The rep on the phone never mentioned these books coming monthly ! ).
I was told collection would be arranged but at my expense of £3.50, I reluctantly agreed because it was better tha paying the price of the books. Although I really wasnt happy, why should I pay for something I never asked for?
A few months passed and the books were not collected so I contated world books who said they would send a returns label for the books, in the meantime I was contacted by a debt collection agency instructed to demand payment for the books on the behalf of world books, I ignored this as a few days later the returns label came and I sent the books back at long last.
The letters from debt collection kept coming and World Books added many late payment charges, every time I contacted them I was told that the action would be stopped once the books I had returned were registered as returned, then I recieved a letter saying that the books could not be traced, I had also paid the fee they were demanding because i was threatened with ccj's.
I sent the proof of posting for the books to show I had returned the books and hey presto they magically appeared, so I contacted world books asking for the fees I had paid to be returned. The letter I got back was a stement which did not detail my payment to them and said i still owe them money for various charges.
So in short world books is not a book club I would recomend, I am sure some people have had better experiences but I am still trying to sort my account out and it is taking months as they are not very quick to reply too letters or e-mails.
Isnt it funny how if you owe them money ( or should I say if they decide you owe them money) they write almost daily with demands and threats of bailiffs and court, yet if they owe you money they go strangely silent.
I have given this book club one star and it does not even deserve that.
I wouldnt advise anyone choose this book club, there are plently of other good book clubs, we dont need ones like World Books.
UPDATE they have still not sorted this out for me and it has been over 6 months now i have been waiting,I would not advise anyone to join this book club.
Update - I reccenlty joined another book club and I did not realise it was actually owned by the same company, so I just wanted to warn others to check exactly who it is you are signing up with!
Summary: Stay well clear of this book club.
